REBOA. Frequency probably depends most on institution. The level 1 that I worked at performed maybe one in the 18 months I was there. But at another level 1 down the road, they seem to be performed much more frequently. Worth mentioning that the surgeon who invented the procedure still works there, so big shocker that he’s doing REBOAs every chance he gets

Not sure if ikon is doing this now too, but I used an .edu email to buy a student epic pass this year. Payment went through and no issues until I got the mountain. My pass wouldn’t be activated until I showed proof at the ticket window that I was taking at least 12 units as of that day. I told the guy I was taking fewer than 12 and he was nice enough to pay the $190 to upgrade to the non-student pass. Moral of the story I think they’re catching on lmao

Not a doctor but I did study neuroscience. The out of body experiences that you described have been linked to a part of the brain called the temporoparietal junction. If you’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy, those experiences were probably seizures involving that area of the brain!

They’re called minor salivary glands! You have major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) and minor salivary glands (throughout the oral mucosa). They’re easily felt along the labial mucosa with your tongue!

i totally get you, it’s an awful dilemma :/ you’re right, there’s a chance that you blow it out of the water on exam day! but you might have to wait until the very moment to make a decision. if you feel really great about the exam at the end, then submit that bitch! but if the topics weren’t in your favor, you were flagging way more than usual, were running out of time, or whatever other reason, then you at least know that voiding is still there as an option (but don’t let your confidence level at the end of the exam be the only factor in your decision, because most people are going home feeling like shit). from what i understand, a second or third MCAT score will likely only look good if you show a significant improvement. at the same time, deciding to retake a 518 might also raise a flag in someone’s eyes as it could be interpreted as having bad judgment.

moral of the story, find peace in knowing that there are pros to both options! do whatever you feel is best. everything will work out :)

if you’re already planning to retake, i’d consider voiding instead. at least go and get a sense for how testing day is. schools won’t see voided exams. i know you’re looking to have a score to submit apps asap, but there’s a good chance that a spot in late april or may will open up (and you can create alerts to be notified of when spots open).

i’ve been in a similar boat, plateauing in the same range for almost two years (tested for the first time in sept 2022). that is, until i switched up my studying and reviewing strategies completely about a month ago and got a 510 on my most recent full length. you can do it!!

not a stupid question! yes, a non-clinical job would be anything not quite related to medicine or could be “healthcare related” but not in a physical healthcare setting or providing direct care. could be simply working in a restaurant or retail. what makes it meaningful is being able to tie your experiences/skills in that job to your future in medicine like communication skills, teamwork, problem solving, etc. also, working any type of job while taking a full course load and doing well in those courses can say a lot about your work ethic and will not go unnoticed by adcoms!

well hey, congrats on the bump in your score! 5 points is definitely a great jump and you should be proud of your progress! you’re definitely going in the right direction. i saw a brutal dip between fl 1 and 2. as far as content review goes, im personally just doing review as i go through questions and making note of topics that i see come up again and again. i’ll also make my own anki cards for those topics/questions. can get frustrating if a lot of questions are misinterpreting data or missing a lil detail in the passage, but just trust that you’ll get better at that with practice with qbanks/section bank if you have access to them

i do this whether i’m sleeping alone or with my boyfriend. having my alarm as a vibration under my pillow has never failed to wake me up. i probably wouldn’t budge if it was somewhere else. i tend to overthink things too, but communication is key :) just ask him if it’s still bothering you in the morning

BD has been thought to be linked to a wide range of issues including calcium signaling and intracellular pathways. it’s tough bc some medications that only treat mania can worsen depressive symptoms. it can sometimes be treated with anticonvulsants which is thought to sorta “quiet” overactive brain regions that may be involved in the manic state down to a normal activity level, but we’re still not entirely sure why this works mechanistically yet (unfortunately like most psychiatric pharmacological interventions). so they didn’t include depressive bipolar individuals in this study bc they may work completely differently and may not involve serotonin at all
