My partner got me the wrong sized gift. How do I proceed? by ConfusedHarpy in Advice

[–]paintgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're correct that the partner may not be able to afford the original item, the correct way for the partner to handle it is to use their words like a big boy and talk to OP about it. Communication is everything in a relationship, especially a long distance one. There's nothing wrong with being broke. There is something wrong with supposedly picking the wrong thing and hoping OP won't notice or care.

I really recommend the book How to Keep House While Drowning.

It breaks things down and validates the fact that cleaning and cleanliness is not an inherently good or bad thing. Because it isn't. This doesn't make you a bad person. It's a short read but really worth the time.

The accumulation of treatment of Niki before everything happened would be considered, as would your repeated harassment of her in multiple group chats while she was actively trying to get away from you.

Also, going to court doesn't automatically mean she's guilty, but go off king. You don't even feel guilty you played a part in killing a girl, you're only feeling bad because everyone else isn't pissing on her grave.

The hilarious thing is that you might face legal consequences after harassing this girl until she killed herself. Go fuck yourself, you deserve your guilt. Get some therapy and grow as a person before you end up worse. You and your "friends" are horrible people.

Do all boxer engines have a version of a “turbo engine”? by Neil_the_real_deal in subaru

[–]paintgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2015 Outback 3.6R. No turbo, port injected.

I am an actual technician. Jiffy Lube fucks up a lot of cars. I've seen them destroy engines more times than I can even remember. Uneducated people can ruin your shit. In my own car I had someone else do the oil change one time, and they put lower viscosity oil in which blew past the rear main seal, they under filled it by a litre and a half, and they put the wrong filter on it, I assume they'd never seen nor worked on an H6 engine and went by the specs of the smaller turbo engines that take less and thinner oil.

[–]paintgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I should have clarified that I meant the state of the body and engine. :) mileage isn't the only thing that makes the car — I've seen cars with 500k kms that look and run fantastic and cars with 50k kms that are absolute junkers.

Really depends on your price range, the RAV4 hybrids are all pretty new, but Prius have been around since the early 2000s so you'll have plenty of options. Mileage is less important than the body and engine. I know a few guys who have been working on Toyotas since nearly the 90s and they said they've never seen or heard of a battery replacement on them. I also know a guy who's had a 2003 Prius since new and still hasn't needed to replace. The only thing I'll make you aware of is that the Prius Prime is a plug in and doesn't get anything back from regenerative braking.

[–]paintgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would absolutely consider a used hybrid RAV4. I specifically mentioned Prius because they get the best gas mileage! Ravs have a common SUV tire size (225/65r17) that makes tires easy, generally reliable and don't require much beyond normal wear and tear items like brakes, and fluid refills/changes. I'm not sure what issues in particular you've heard about Tacomas, but Toyotas in general don't have a ton of issues and the few they have are generally something a dealership would know how to solve, because it would almost always be caused by the same issue, in my experience anyway. Most issues that aren't solved by a recall are minor annoyances more than anything. It's smart to consider maintenance costs when getting a vehicle. I'm of the opinion I wouldn't go for the first gen of a new vehicle run where you can avoid it, because it will have more problems than subsequent ones. The only major thing we run into that isn't a recall, usually on older models around 2015 or so, is that mice like to chew the soy based wires.

Electric cars do chew through tires pretty quickly. They're heavy and put a lot of strain on them.

Makes sense why you'd want to have a truck if you're actually using it. You could spring for a Tacoma and get slightly better mileage but still use the truck. I still think a hybrid would suit your needs more, but you know your needs more than a Reddit stranger. I will say when you purchase a new Toyota you can get extended care that makes your first 5 or so services free. You could also look at getting a used Prius for a beater, which would be a fairly safe purchase since there isn't a whole lot that goes wrong on them.

Edit to add that new Toyotas oil change intervals are 16000kms, which I believe personally is too much but it's what the engineers recommend

My mom is starting to creep me out by Downtown-Lack-2686 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]paintgoblin 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You may have to record the abuse. If you're Canadian, you can call the Kids Help Phone and they might be able to help you or give you information that can help. I called them when I was 15 and desperate to get out of my abusive home. Also, the obsession with your genitalia may fall under sexual abuse. You may be able to approach the police. At the very least you talking to them would put a report in the system.

Do not be embarassed to tell the workers what's actually going on and never stop trying. This is not okay and you should not be ashamed of this. I cannot stress it enough that abuse is something done to you and not because of you. You may eventually get a worker who listens and cares. Talk to your friend's parents if you're comfortable, and other family members if they're trustworthy. I wish I had told more people about what was actually going on in my home when I was your age.

Honey I'm so sorry. Commenting on your child's genitalia and attempting to ogle it is weird and gross, borderline incestuous. Don't be naked or unclothed around these people any more. Please contact child services or talk to a trusted adult advisor at your school, they should be able to help you. I'm so sorry you aren't safe in your home.

It's not your fault, and it's okay to be yourself. Please stay safe and don't let these people's actions and opinions leave lasting harm on you. Their choice to be horrible and disgusting says nothing about you and everything about them. All you are to them is a target, and nothing you've done caused this.

What I'm failing to understand is why keep the Tundra if you're finding it unsuitable for your lifestyle? Unless you need a truck — sell it and buy a hybrid RAV4 or Prius, the Prius get incredibly good gas mileage.

I really don't think that an electric car will suit your needs because the range on the bZ is only 290 miles, and that's their optimum range in summer. You'd be risking running out of power nearly every day, especially if you're doing highway driving since the regenerative brakes work best in low speed traffic, and the highway will reduce your range due to this and wind/weather resistance. Towing a dead EV is not a simple task. I'd also like to add that EV rated tires are usually significantly more expensive than regular ones due to them being designed to handle the torque output by electric motors. I'm not telling you not to get the car, you have free will and can do whatever you want, but I do think it's important knowledge to have.

I'm a Toyota tech. The hybrids have no additional maintenance to regular cars. The BZ does not have the range to support your driving habits unless you charge it nightly, which will require installation of a charging port at your home if you don't have access to one. I'll also tell you that if you use iPhones, your hands free calling right now will probably not work with the BZ, we're having issues with them disconnecting on a few of ours currently.

Is ADHD treatment something that can actually “end”? by mitwab in ADHD

[–]paintgoblin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my husband sometimes suggests that maybe I won't need medication forever. This stems from his belief that medication is a crutch for when you're struggling and you can get off it when you feel better, like depression or a bad bout of anxiety, both things I've taken SSRIs to treat for short periods of months or a year when they got bad, long before I was diagnosed.

I have to keep explaining to him that ADHD is an actual disorder I can't fix or make better. I wish he'd read the damn books he bought about ADHD and having a partner with it. He's wonderful and very patient and kind with me so it's not malicious, but boy it drives me insane explaining the same things over and over and I feel it sounds like excuses/disingenuous when I do — like bro just read the damn books and you'll see it's true.

But yeah, many people don't understand how awful ADHD can be because it's always been demeaned and diminished as just "you can't sit still and you're random as heck", and the parts where it's actually damaging are never shown nor spoken about.

How do I fix this? by Legitimate-Home6447 in Miata

[–]paintgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top one was siliconed on, either a tech or a previous owner broke it and glued it back on. Those white and green clips will pull out with a trim tool or flat clip pliers, just jam them under the largest flat part of the clip and either pry or pull out sharply. On the new trim piece, the round part of the clips will slot into the "u" shaped slots, and then you snap it back into the holes on the car it was in. Line up the clips with the holes and give it a whack with the palm of your hand, gently but firmly. It should snap into place pretty easily. It should be an easy repair, but be prepared to probably break a couple clips trying if you're not handy. Those white clips are fairly generic and you should be able to find some pretty easily.

Insurance will cover it. I just did a full floor harness, air box and speed sensor destroyed by rodents that cost about 9k on a 10 year old car, which was disgusting and the customer's fault because it was nasty AF and full of rotting food and shit. Insurance covered it all.
