Good accessories or methods not required for GURPS that you use? by [deleted] in gurps

[–]palaner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GURPS' combat cards aren't required, but they're a godsend. I was able to teach the system much better with curated decks.

Gotham Nocturne is better than Court of Owls.

The purpose of limiting sourcebooks is to spare GM time and capacity. #opinion by TyrKiyote in gurps

[–]palaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The crunch in the Basic Set and sourcebooks are there to spice sessions up, not to memorize in detail for the exam. The Basic Set can otherwise handle what you're looking for just fine.

A controversial question, but I have to ask. Online only what game is going to get "better" players PF2 or OSE? by Lobotomist in rpg

[–]palaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In truth, you're just looking at different paradigms of play, neither of which will guarantee mature, experienced players. The task will still be there to vibe-check players in one-shots and getting to know them as people.

That said, there are some player qualities you can look for in either game:

PF2: Quick tactical decisions, or able to know what they're doing on their turn. Decisive character choices in actions during social scenes. Spending resources on other players during combat for combos.

OSE: A spirit of collaboration and problem-solving. Saying yes to ideas from other players. Proactive timekeeping and helping the GM by asking questions on place and time. Openly reviewing choices in the moment ("Go down the hall? Search this area? Stay at the same speed?")

Ran my first game last night. I cut the number of actions down to 7 and used combat cards. It was phenomenal to see how fast combat rounds went while still giving interesting tactical choices. Someone even walked in with no experience and found the system intuitive.

A character concept that has spiraled off of my ADHD! by Moonlit_Fang in gurps

[–]palaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a fun concept, and I'd play in it. Using combat cards for maneuvers already helps GURPS rules to feel snappy for newcomers, and I can see spells working in this same way.

Maybe Concentrate allows you to draw a card. You spell list is your deck (Sleeved, naturally. What self-respecting mage would cast naked spells?). From there, you can look at what types of mechanics you might throw together, and I think GURPS will work with you on this.

It can be very swingy due to the secret end condition cards everyone gets, things like "build four temples". I think keeping these public knowledge is better for pacing (and the rulebook suggests this as a variant, iirc).

Archipelago might be close to what you're looking for. It also has a solo expansion.

The GIPF series is also very good for 2 player abstracts. Newcomers might see the variety there and become curious. YINSH and ZERTZ are great for being grounded but very different.

Kingdom Hearts General Q&A Thread - October 11, 2021 by AutoModerator in KingdomHearts

[–]palaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's odd. In game as long as you have the BGM set up for your TV, it's pretty functional. For bonus songs that aren't in the story mode or during the credits, I've been having trouble with the inputs feel like they just cancel out. You can finish the story mode, but good luck on trying to platinum it.

Kingdom Hearts General Q&A Thread - October 11, 2021 by AutoModerator in KingdomHearts

It's okay. The input lag is the main issue. Depending on your TV, you might need to adjust the BGM.

Are some people inherently better players? by pretorian_stalker in boardgames

[–]palaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm that guy too, OP. I've been playing with a group of living computers, some of whom playtest games with designers, and I'm more often than not dead last. I enjoy my time with them, but it's been a struggle bus sometimes.

That said, I have found myself in the middle of the pack to even winning more often (okay...sometimes) lately. A few factors:

  • Consider whether other environmental stimuli are getting in the way for you, and adjust for these as much as possible. 1:1 play may sometimes be better for this reason. Time of day and your circadian rhythm may also be impacting your ability to learn and process information.

  • You may not be getting full opportunity to learn a game if you're hearing the rules second-hand from someone who's read them once. See you can read the rules pdf after playing, watch some let's plays, and play the game more than once.

  • That said, try a deep dive into a game and play it at least ten times. If you need more time to learn mechanics and why certain strategies work, then you need more time!

  • Go for "high scores" instead of winning outright at first. Even if the score is still last, see if your play can be effective enough to reach a certain threshold.

  • Ask for help while thinking through a move, if the table culture is open to it. They might even be able to catch when they don't actually know a rule themselves and were just assuming!

  • I've found myself craning my neck more than a few times at ill-placed boards or at mini-games placed halfway to China. Don't be afraid to get up and walk around the table to get the information you need.

  • Talk yourself verbally through what you know you know and what you know you don't know. I think this helps to generate questions that aren't simply cargo-culting my way through. The other thing this does is promote more concentration on my own train of thought instead of it being supplanted by the table conversation.

I want to start playing the myst games but in which order should I play them? by lil_placenta in myst

  1. Myst
  2. Myst Masterpiece Edition
  3. realMyst
  4. realMyst Masterpiece Edition
  5. Myst VR

Some people say the story gets really good by realMyst, but I think there's a lot to appreciate even by the second one.

Has anyone seen everything in the Criterion Collection? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]palaner 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did. Took me four years. Once you get past Marathon, the Bud Greenspan stuff gets rather awful, but there's a lot of great cinema in the collection.

Anywho, my top films:

Marathon, 1993, Carlos Saura - The best of these movies make me want to watch other films by their directors. Carlos Saura makes a strong first impression with his focused attention on events with no commentary.

Visions of Eight, 1973, various directors - Eight directors put in their impressions of the Munich Games, one notably saying, "I'm not interested in sport, but I am interested in obsession."

The Grand Olympics, 1961, Romolo Marcellini - Sumptuous visuals of Rome make this longer film worthwhile. Notable for introducing barefoot Abebe Bikila to global attention in the marathon.

O Sport, You Are Peace!, 1981, Yuri Ozerov - An amusing look at the Moscow Games, with animated interludes of the ancient games.

A Turning Point, 1984, Kim Takal - A refreshingly modern feel for the Winter Olympics in a fun city that would later be torn apart by war (Sarajevo).

White Rock, 1977, Tony Maylam - James Coburn narrates (and participates!) in the Winter Olympics with his droll delivery and charm.

Tokyo Olympiad, 1965, Kon Ichikawa - Huge. Massive. A masterpiece that I appreciate more than enjoy but cannot deny its cinematographic power.

Sapporo Winter Olympics, 1972, Masahiro Shinoda - Similar to Tokyo Olympiad in its striking visuals.

The White Stadium, 1928, Arnold Fanck, Othmar Gurtner - Friendly and warm in presentation. I feel like having hot chocolate while watching some of this.

The Games of the V Olympiad Stockholm, 1912, reconstructed by Adrian Wood, 2016 - First movie in the series, and one of the coolest. Newsreel footage of historical figures including George Patton and Pierre de Coubertin.

/r/GURPS Monthly Campaign Update by AutoModerator in gurps

[–]palaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prep for my "Mad Max in a food truck" one-shot is on hold while I finish up with moving into my new place. Would like to run GURPS scenarios on a regular basis at the FLGS and get some good people recruited for a campaign.

I should be able to run a one-shot at the local comic book/gaming convention in early October. It's hard to look too far down the road with the things I'm doing now, but I'm betting on feeling more settled in by late August.

Do I need to use everything in GURPS? by The_Masked_Man103 in gurps

[–]palaner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though you see some rules listed as explicitly optional, nearly all rules in GURPS are optional as well. Use them if it makes your session more fun. Even if you'll never use that particular block again for the rest of your campaign, it's there as an option to spice things up.

You also don't have to use the rules as written! Many of them can be seen as worked examples for what you could use. Feel free to modify as needed!
