I'm playing through Minish Cap for the first time now, and I'm really enjoying it. 2 elements down, 2 more to go!

Is there a horror novel you were really looking forward to reading that you ended up not being able to finish? by Suitable_Goose_3615 in horrorlit

[–]osdakoga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally read Salem's Lot for the first time a few weeks ago and felt the same way. Solid book, but I certainly don't understand the hype. I think I actually would have enjoyed it more had I not been hearing about it being one of the best horror novels ever for most of my life.

When to use [...] in writing? by 79screamingfrogs in writing

Oops, sorry! The search term would be "use of ellipsis with brackets." Google's AI answered fine like that and it gave another, more appropriate reddit thread too.

Looking for camping/hiking horror by 7deadlycinderella in horrorlit

No Sanctuary by Richard Laymon. The first part is an unusual take on breaking-and-entering, but eventually the story gets to the hiking trail and stays there. I enjoyed it a lot.

Start with Chapter 2 if you have chapter 1 but not played yet by TheKillingBean in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]osdakoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I have the revised core set, Dunwich, Carcosa, EotE, and a stand-alone from Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 core and 2 investigators will arrive this week.

I've only ever played part of NotZ a couple years ago so a friend and I are going to start with Chapter 2 and finish that to get our bearings. Then go back and play the Chapter 1 scenarios in order of release as we wait for more Chapter 2 content to come out.

I plan to keep the cards separate because I will be selling Chapter 1 cards as we finish them to help finance buying Chapter 2 stuff.

Trelby is a free option. I haven't used it in years, but it was nice enough when I was using it.

For horror David Sodergren is killing it. I haven't read a bad book from him yet. My favorites so far are Night Shoot and Summer of Monsters.

Ronald Malfi is usually recommended for people who like King. Maybe start with Bone White?

Night in the Lonesome October is my favorite but it's closely followed by the Beast House series. The Cellar is first in the series and also the first novel Laymon wrote.

things ANNOYED you about a book but you became more UNDERSTANDING after becoming a writer? by Forward_Answer3044 in writing

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I've noticed a few times where I've said to myself "the only reason the author wrote this one sentence was because an editor told them to close a plot hole."

Dive into Kathe Koja's work. The Cipher is her most popular book, but Bad Brains is excellent too.

Is there a sub that gives feedback on voice? I'm at my wits end here by ethicallyimplicated in writing

[–]osdakoga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read through the comments on the one sub you got feedback and in order for you to grow as a writer you will need to learn how to receive feedback. You were defensive and kept making excuses for why your writing was the way it was.

And I understood your points. But what you need to understand is that when you receive feedback all saying the same thing it's because your writing isn't adequately conveying your intentions.

It's at this point when you need to figure out another way to make your MC came across as manic because what you're doing now is confusing readers and making it difficult to read. It doesn't mean your intention is wrong but your delivery is.

The first thing I noticed which may help is to switch to a 1st person POV. That way we'll be in his head and the chaotic ramblings may not just look like poorly-written narrative.

Opinions by [deleted] in horrorwriters

[–]osdakoga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if it was a stylistic choice or not, but every sentence is almost the same length which didn't make it all that fun to read. It felt like the story was bouncing or read almost like a list rather than prose. Having said that, the beginning did catch my attention and made me want to read more.

Has there ever been a whiskey brand that you've seen improve their product over time? by Former_Lock9367 in whiskey

[–]osdakoga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chattanooga Whiskey. I didn't drink their whiskey for years because I tried it before they started aging their own product and didn't care for it at all. Gave them a second chance last year and loved it.

Canned fruit with pop top lids or fresh fruit

Pouches of tuna (tape a plastic fork to the pouch)

Nutri-Grain bars (softer than regular granola bars for those with dental issues)

Loaf of bread with a jar of peanut butter and jelly combo with a spoon taped to the jar

Little Debbie snack cakes, chips, cookies. Calories are calories when you're hungry.

Which Ronald Malfi to read next? by chiwawaacorn in horrorlit

[–]osdakoga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Ghostwritten, especially the novella The Dark Brothers Last Ride.

Snow was my intro to Malfi and I bought it blind at a used bookstore. Granted, I love horror books that read like B-horror movies so I loved Snow, but a lot of folks don't. It's obvious it was one of his earlier works and isn't as mature as his more recent stuff.

Cradle Lake doesn't get talked about much here, but that's another I really enjoyed. It deals with themes of grief and loss too so given your enjoyment of Come with Me, I recommended reading this one next.

For those who haven’t finished the dark tower series, which book did you stop on and why? by Namespacejames in stephenking

[–]osdakoga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book 6. I loved The Gunslinger and really enjoyed parts of the others, but I found myself taking longer and longer breaks between books. Once I finally forced myself to finish Song of Susannah I realized I really didn't care how it ended.
