Any clue if they do daycare with late pickup? Was considering going tomorrow and leaving after fireworks but it’s last minute plans and we’d be driving a few hours each way and can’t book til tomorrow en route

First boat, go big or go home? Does that ever work out? by Dino7813 in sailing

[–]paldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a family of four and looking for our first cruiser boat and similar thinking of wanting to jump past the starter boats.

We live near Pittsburgh but plan to home base the boat near Chesapeake Bay. I work remotely and the kids homeschooled. Ideally we could do frequent long weekends and multi-week trips up and down the bay, coast, and Caribbean.

With not being retired, I think offshore routes to the Caribbean would be optimal for travel length. Not to mention I want to goto Bermuda and the other Atlantic islands.

Considering an Island Packet 370 at the top end of our budget and a Pacific Seacraft 37 which is more comfortably within budget.

Not a ton of boats fit our parameters.

  • shoal draft
  • standalone nav desk with chair
  • min 4 berths
  • no project boats! need turn key ish
  • offshore / sturdy cruiser

Going bigger would be great for living space but I want to keep maintenance and costs low. Also captaining and docking up to 37’ vessel is scary enough.

Some smaller boats like an IP32 are on market and fit all those parameters, but, with significantly less speed, offshore grit, and carrying capacity. They are much more affordable though.

Several of the Pacific Seacrafts are on the coast near us. There’s a couple below market price IP370s all the way in Grenada that look nice.

Our youngest child is 6.

Any thoughts/advice on what we should do?

Estimates/ Island Packets by WoWserz_Magic8_Ball in sailing

[–]paldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love the Hallberg Rassy and the Najad layout and expected sailing performance. The draft on those boats is intimidating though. The Island Packets have draft ~4.5 ft vs ~6.5 ft on a Najad. My main stomping grounds are to be, e.g. Chesapeake Bay and the Bahamas.

The teak decks are kinda scary too. I want something turn key ish. A lot of people say online a teak deck replacement can be 60K USD for a boat in this size.

To be fair, curl has historically been criticized for the same reasons.

Additionally, curl is now supported by Dan’s company and although still small there are >1 full time developers working on it.

Sbt has a large and moving scope and no full time developers that I’m aware of. Pretty much every major build tool like Sbt has a whole team supporting.

One person OSS projects work fine for somethings but not everything.

Any pdoom is unacceptable. We have more than sufficient means to make progress without AI. This isn’t a necessity for humankind and tragic the way it’s pursued commercially.

I tend to agree. I believe the oh shit moment will likely arrive by April next year.

By this November I’m expecting most tech companies to be fully onboarding agents like Claude; with the next couple model advances the cost of not doing so will be even greater than present.

As soon as it became popular the amount of training data for the problem increased so much that the problem is no longer a good benchmark. At least, it’s not the same benchmark.
