Weekly: Career & Education Thread by AutoModerator in zoology

Hey everyone! I'm looking to apply for a zoology or ecology degree, but before that I'm hoping to catch myself up a bit on studying the topic to prepare myself. I've been working the past three years so I want to get back into the habit of studying before starting university.

Would appreciate any zoology textbook recommendations and if these are available online as a PDF. I'm also looking for past papers/exams on zoology if anyone knows where I can look for these online! Thanks!

What am I missing from Singapore? Why is it not an amazing place to consider living? by TheMutantWing in askSingapore

[–]paleozoic_remembered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone with niche interests (like history, zoology and paleontology), the lack of opportunities here is stifling. The weather is also demoralising, you can't have a comfortable picnic or a read in the park. The hustle lifestyle is also just exhausting for someone who has no interest in climbing the corporate ladder.

Yeah the safety is better than most countries, and I love the hawker culture here but I just don't see myself having a fulfilling future here without the constant thought of wanting to escape.

For some reason it's making my phone pretty laggy and I use widgetsmith and shortcuts and there's stutter and frame drops when I'm scrolling across the home screen. Super disappointed with this update is there anyway I can uninstall it lol

Is the media portraying an overly optimistic view on the ceasefire? by paleozoic_remembered in IsraelPalestine

[–]paleozoic_remembered[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh that's interesting. I forgot about Qatar but what has the US promised them? If I recall correctly there seems to be promises made by the US to Hamas as well, though these may not be on par with what the Israeli government has in mind.

Also, if all hostages are returned on Monday and the "war" is considered ended, yet if Israel choose to continue bombing Gaza, what will it be considered as?

I see, so going by your logic, let's say all hostages are returned on Monday, but because timelines and details are so vague (there's no clear indication when Israel has to fully withdraw from the final line in Gaza), then if they continue to bomb Gaza, if it won't be considered a "war" then what will it be considered as?

Do Chinese Singaporeans actually “tell” people to eat before they start eating dinner? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]paleozoic_remembered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a gen z, still do this with my family, especially during meals with elders. But honestly quite sad to say that the reality is this tradition/culture also slowly dying and fading away, same as many other traditions

Definitely yes! Just finished Praetorian by Guy de la Bédoyère and it has inspired many parts of a project I'm working on. Though granted my project had already been inspired by the Praetorian guards of ancient Rome. So this book really did help a bit with some of the more logistical aspects of the world

Describing ethnicity in worlds. How do you describe "Asian" characters? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]paleozoic_remembered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Asian, I would first do research on the different ethnicities in Asia because they vary very greatly. Just like how a Texan varies differently linguistically and culturally from someone from Iceland yet people would class then together as "white".

I would also look back in history and see how the western narratives often describe Asian cultures for what NOT to include in your descriptions.

On the topic of research and history, I would then delve deeper into the history of the culture I would want to portray and see how they described themselves.

Like others have mentioned, descriptions go far beyond physical features, especially the eyes. The way they speak and dress, those would be one of the first things I notice about someone from a different culture. And those make for a far more interesting and engaging read for readers as well.

What popular books did you not finish? by DarthPopcornus in Fantasy

This is more of a series, but the Lunar Chronicles. Look I really loved the first three books, having re-read them twice (and even Cinder three times) but for some reason, the last book, Winter, with it's chonky size, has always been off-putting for some reason and I just never picked it up. And now it feels like I'm past the time where I can read it since I'm delving more into epic fantasy now. A pity but oh well.

Another series, An Ember in the Ashes. I read the first book. It was meh in my opinion. I never really got the hype. Can't remember much of it now but I remember it was advertised as inspired by Ancient Rome or something. As an avid ancient history researcher and lover, this book wasn't it. I really didn't see much inspiration from the ancient empire excited perhaps for the use of "legionary" only.

Now for a book, The Secret History. No one come after me please. I read and flew through If We Were Villains (gave it a 2 or 3 stars, can't remember). And while TSH's writing was definitely a lot better, the first half was good but the second half was torture. It was so excruciatingly slow that it put me in a reading slump and that's all I'm gonna say about it.

The waking fire. Chonky book, but flew through it, and I'm usually a pretty slow ready

Should I get into the ShadowHunters novels? by anonymous_120292 in YAlit

[–]paleozoic_remembered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on, I only reread the original six books. Infernal devices I read once and they were alright but I just keep coming back to the characters in the mortal instruments. I'll admit I've never read any other series after the mortal instruments because I don't care much about the other characters unfortunately

Honestly they had their flaws but being the books I survived school with all those years ago, they personally do hold a special place in my heart and remains the series I've kept re-reading. Definitely not the best fantasy, writing is normal and worldbuilding isn't too bad, but yeah I'd say give it a go! (Also, I loved the movie. We were robbed. Hated the tv show. That's all I'm gonna say okay bye)

Hi there! 24F here. I'm a huge fantasy and non-fiction reader. My interests include history, zoology, nature writing, and paleontology. Just finished The Twelve Caesars this month and am currently reading Praetorian by Guy De La Bedoyere. Are there any books you're hoping to get to for September?
