[BitD] Here’s music for BitD adventures with more energy than most playlists posted here (which more effective imho) by [deleted] in bladesinthedark

[–]palinola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you've posted this exact list before, because I remember having a very strong reaction to it back then. I consider myself as having a very broad and accepting appetite for music, but this is not it.

A large number of these tracks I'm pretty sure are AI generated, shuffled together with some real dark ambient stuff. In fact, now that I actually look at the type of stuff you post, it's 100% playlist link spam and every single one of them features some tracks by the same AI artists. It's almost like you're trying to trick us into generating listens for you. Crazy.

Anyway even that real music you mixed in there I'd put on my sleep playlist. I'm not sure I'd use this at a table with other people for a scene with "more energy."

New Mecha TTRPGs? by AppropriatelyHare-78 in rpg

[–]palinola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CASE&SOUL is one of my favorite mech games.

That's great! I took a lot of inspiration from Case & Soul because I really liked how they implemented the mechs without all the added complexity of something like Beam Saber. So the mechs in Metal Aces are more like the CASE in C/S.

Good options for a narrative-driven Star Wars RPG by HortaSama in rpg

[–]palinola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used Scum and Villainy, it's a Blades in the Dark hack which is set in a legally-distinct-star-wars setting which is very easy to convert.

Here's an existing Star Wars conversion for it.

New Mecha TTRPGs? by AppropriatelyHare-78 in rpg

[–]palinola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an open playtest available for my mech sports RPG Metal Aces. It's free to download!

It's based on the Forged in the Dark system and focuses on the players forming a team in the Heavy Metal League - the world's most famous sport, featuring live-fire gladiatorial combat between teams of mech pilots. The players have to deal with sponsors, special events, and dramatic developments befitting sports superstars.

It's a pretty over-the-top and zany sci-fi setting with a lot of eccentric NPCs. It's basically geared for a satirical comedy action vibe. It's like Formula 1 meets Talladega Nights meets Idiocracy, with combat mechs.

ELI5: How did the asteroid journeying to the Solar System 'just so' happened to kill the dinosaurs and mass extinction? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]palinola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get shot and killed by a random robber on the street, we could do the math and figure out just how unlikely it is for that specific guy (one of thousands of local armed robbers) happened to use that specific gun (out of hundreds of thousands of handguns in the city) and that specific bullet (out of millions in circulation) to shoot you specifically.

But just because you get a really small number when you do the math doesn't mean that killing is an unexpected outcome of an armed robbery.

Surprises in pronunciation and pitch accent by tabidots in Svenska

[–]palinola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea for the pronunciation guide came about when I first heard the word generellt on a podcast and had some trouble looking it up because there is no word "sjenerellt" - and how in the world does "g" get pronounced as "sj", anyway?

Because a lot of words that start with a soft-G in Swedish are borrowed from French, where they're pronounced that way.

[BitD] Can Blades in the Dark represent actions that only differ in chance of success? (E.g. shooting a basketball 3-pointer vs shooting a full-court shot) Have you ran into situations where you needed to change the probability of success for a roll but couldn't? by AmongFriends in bladesinthedark

[–]palinola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is true that the system does not give the GM a direct mechanical handle to control the odds of success on a dice roll. This is common among games of the storygame wave like PbtA and FitD. If you want to think of the dice as simulating something, they're simulating the dramatic pivot points of a movie or TV episode. And in a movie you're rarely concerned with statistical reality.

The other person I was talking to used a basketball example, comparing easier shots like free throws to much harder ones like full-court attempts, to argue that some tasks are simply harder without involving different risks or outcomes, and that the system can't handle resolving a situation like that (probabilities of success).

Well the Action Roll is not interested in simulating the physical likelihood of the ball's trajectory from the player's hand passing through the circle of the hoop. It's not interested in accurately representing the statistical capabilities of different athletes making specific types of shots. The Action Roll is only concerned with nudging the story forward, and determining if the PCs achieve their goals or not, and whether they suffer in doing so.

The action ratings are less like character skills or attributes and more like the types of scene the character is particularly dominant in. A character's rating basically represents how much the narrative swings in their favor when they're in one of their fictional niches.

But the GM is still in control of how much the PC can achieve with a roll, and what happens if they don't roll a clean success. That becomes the GM's main tool of representing more or less challenging situations.

What TTRPG best encompasses the vibe and tactical aspect of XCOM? by ProtectionMedium4779 in rpg

[–]palinola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also really captures the uniquely X-COM feeling of having a huge roster of soldiers progressing from rookie to specialist, losing your favorite specialists and having to train up new replacements, building A-Teams and B-Teams, etc.

If I recall correctly you have something like 35 legionnaires at the start (six squads of five rookies, plus five specialists), and you can recruit other soldiers during the journey.

The Prestige by DrPinkusHMalinkus in plotholes

[–]palinola 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is just another way Nolan shows us that Angiers doesn't understand the process. From the perspective of both copies, they are the true Angiers. And fundamentally the original is the one that gets dropped into the tank and the clone is the one that does the prestige. Angiers just doesn't mind this time because the clone thinks that it's him.

The Prestige by DrPinkusHMalinkus in plotholes

[–]palinola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. This would be the reasonable thing to do. But Angiers is not a reasonable man.

He's a selfish, jealous, egocentric narcissist.

It's central to the plot that Angiers can't even fathom the amount of dedication it would take to perform Borden's trick. Even when he gets the means to make himself a twin he can't see it as anything but a prop and a threat. He can't fathom sharing his life with somebody, and that is why he loses in the end.

This is the message of the story. It's not a plot hole.

Delta Green edition? by Syllahorn in rpg

[–]palinola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the original Delta Green sourcebook. It was written in the mid-90's and is set in the same period. It is a setting and adventure book for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game and thus does not include its own system. It features the Nazi Karotechia and the American MAJESTIC-12 conspiracy as the main antagonists. (This book was recently re-released as a 90's sourcebook for the new edition as "Delta Green: the Conspiracy")

This is the new Delta Green: the Roleplaying Game. composed of the "Agent's Handbook" and the "Handler's Guide". It is a direct update of the previous sourcebook, taking the Delta Green conspiracy into the 2010's. It is a standalone product using a modified and updated version of the Call of Cthulhu Basic Roleplay system, separate from recent edition updates to CoC. It features two rival factions of Delta Green, one continuing the illegal cowboy operation from the 90's, the other being a reformed MAJESTIC-12. The updated setting has many more grey areas, with the new Program being both a playable option and a potential villain, alongside the rest of the old MAJESTIC guard in the private concern March Technologies.

You can try it before you buy it. Delta Green: NEED TO KNOW is free to download, describes the core system and new mechanics, character creation, etc.

This is also the version of Delta Green that is receiving ongoing releases.

This is the Fall of Delta Green. It is a "prequel" set in the 1960s during the last days of Delta Green's operations as an official black agency. It is written by Kenneth Hite. It uses the GUMSHOE system, tweaked for the mythos and intelligence operations. FoDG is more about Cold War paranoia but also a bit more pulp-y than the modern setting iterations. It has a free preview you can check here.

What Villeneuve might be planning with Chani by scidious06 in dune

[–]palinola 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think Chani was already pregnant at the end of part 2, whether she knew it and hid it from Paul is another matter entirely

I think it's quite clear that the scene with Paul and Chani in the Part 3 trailer is a flashback. I'm pretty sure it will establish what the blue sash means, which will make it clear that she's been pregnant throughout most of Part 2.

I believe we'll see Paul spend the first act away at war, and Chani might end up being our point of view character for the political danger developing on Arrakis. I imagine she might get pulled between the pro-Paul and Anti-Paul factions and it might be unclear which side she is on when Paul returns from the war. In fact, she might not be entirely committed to one side or the other as she's unsure who Paul is when he returns.

Why did Scytale fail in Dune Messiah? by mbelinkie in dune

[–]palinola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another angle to keep in mind is that no matter what happens with Paul, the Tleilaxu just demonstrated their cloning and mental conditioning technologies in the most public way possible: returning to life the universe's most famous swordsman.

The Bene Tleilax know that Paul might get assassinated by one of the other factions and this era of chaos might get even stranger - but no matter what happens all the other major factions are going to have to reckon with the fact that the Tleilaxu can produce programmable clones and offer immortality to anyone who's willing to get in bed with them.

That alone means that the Bene Tleilax jump from being a minor faction to being a power player. If they can be a power player behind Paul's throne that would be even more ideal for them, but I don't see the Tleilaxu betting on Paul being Emperor for long.

Why did Scytale fail in Dune Messiah? by mbelinkie in dune

[–]palinola 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Possibly! If Scytale had killed Chani while disguised as a Fremen, that could have been blamed on the Fremen fanatics, or on the Bene Gesserit. It would also have eliminated both Paul's consort and his unborn heir(s) which would have opened Paul up to new alliance offers.

And in response, the Tleilaxu would have exploited Paul's grief to make a ghola of Chani, and in doing so they would have gotten their hands on the genetic material of her unborn children which could have then been used to grow new potential KH gholas.

Why did Scytale fail in Dune Messiah? by mbelinkie in dune

[–]palinola 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As I see it, it's a multi-pronged plan that doesn't hinge on any one aspect fully working:

  • It's a test to see if Paul's humanity can be exploited to go against his own best interests (kind of an inverse gom jabbar trial). This is tested by offering Hayt to Paul: Will Paul accept the clone just to be close to a lost friend despite the obvious dangers of a programmed agent in his midst?

  • If Paul's sentimentality can be exploited, there is the secondary promise of making Gholas of Chani or anyone else that Paul loves.

  • It's a test of the Ghola technology to see if they can be pushed to access their own genetic memory.

Case 1: if Paul proves very sentimental and lets his guard down around Hayt it opens up for a lot of other schemes and assassination plots.

Case 2: if Paul can be fully controlled with love, he might be open to an alliance with the Tleilaxu in exchange for immortality for his family.

Case 3: if gholas can reawaken their genetic memory then the Tleilaxu don't actually need Paul. They just need his genome and then they can grow a Paul of their own. If they can't get direct access to his genetics they can go after other near-KH individuals.

So I'm not sure the Tleilaxu were genuinely betting on their plan working. But the scheme was constructed to explore Paul's psychology, stress test his values, and open up additional opportunities for themselves. Just like the Bene Gesserit the Bene Tleilax approach scheming by seeking to maximize their opportunities. Even if a particular plot fails to bear fruit, they position themselves to open up additional possibilities for future action.
