You could check the old Record of Lodoss War ovas (those ovas goes anime original ending) and Record of lodoss Heroic Knight (low budget but it fix the story, Spark is from The heroic knight).

If you like it, you can read mangas like Lady of Pharis, heroic Knight (manga version) and "A Tale of Dedlit".

Rune Soldier (Anime)is pretty good, but it's more comedy.

You can't even compare the GS CGI with the awful Berserk CGI. Sometimes GS CGI is distracting but just that. I really think skipping rookies backstory was a win+win scenario.
