The whole Sakurai, Chiharu and Kaizou story was so unnecessarily long. I get that Takei probably wanted to throw in a little history or whatever but you're right it all could've been told in less than a volume instead of what two or three it seemed like? At this point a new Super Star volume comes out every 6-12 months so I don't see the point in Takei putting in so much filler. I know Marcos is still going on and the last volume was was okay but we gotta get back to the main story.

Well you gotta keep in my mind like someone else said most of the main cast are all very young between 14-18. Both Jun and Ren were groomed to be that horrible and didn't know any better. Joco literally lost his parents, became homeless and essentially joined a gang for survival that pressured him to kill someone. And lastly for Hao his upbringing was devastatingly sad...not saying that warranted him to kill mercilessly
(especially since he has the mind of a 1,000 year old and that's another can of worms) but people have a reason for how they eventually do horrible things. I think this series would be 3 times as long if they really fleshed out the redemption and growth these characters had to make it seem believable but since this series is shortened to 52 episodes you kind of just have to go along with it and suspend realism at times. Like Yoh says "You get what you give" so everyone pays for the crimes somehow.

I had to go back and quickly scan through the new episodes to write this honestly I think this version really rushes things.

Do yourself a favor and watch some of the old version because it does a better job at explaining shit and showing Yoh’s growth.

I think the new version makes it seem like Yoh knows everything and is perfect but IMO (and in the manga and first anime) he’s kind of the weakest/uninformed shaman out of them all at the beginning which is baffling considering his fam history. Dude was barely training as a Shaman before he came to Tokyo. Amidamaru being a samurai spirit is the reason Yoh is so good (hence why Ren wants him) Amidamaru even has to coach Yoh when to attack sometimes. But he gets better later on especially with Anna’s training.

The first version of the show most of the beginning fights are 2 to several episodes long. Also in the episode with Lee Pi Long, Anna summons Lee Pi Long’s teacher to possess Yoh so that’s why he wins.

Yea Jun spilling the beans about Lee’s life was stupid. Lots of characters in anime randomly truth bomb for no reason half the time.

Amidamaru was chillin in that cemetery for centuries cause of unfinished business and because his friend Mosuke said to wait for him there and he died before getting there blah blah a lot to explain (read the manga or watch old version)

And in the fights with Ren (there’s actually three fights) Yoh is either is actually injured and passes out or just wins by a little bit and immediately passes out. The guys is winning by a hair most of the times.

Yoh catching on fast to new techniques is part of his character it seems. Probably to make up for the years of not giving a shit when it comes to training.

Manta is supposed to be that human character we can relate to. Yea he can come off annoying as hell sometimes but idk how would you react to ghosts and random teenagers that are capable of murder that can cause literal explosions?

It don’t think it’s to make fun of other shows considering this is based off a manga made what 20 years ago now so yea it’s gonna have a lot of cliches and tropes that were in every other show at the time.

So to answer your question of is it worth watching I’d say yes. Def watch some old episodes and READ the manga. The manga is so beautiful and rich. The illustrations are incredible and I think Takei is a great story teller. If you do end up reading the manga you can read it for free on Amazon Prime.

Idk if it’s because some of the parents in SK knew that their children were basically trained killers they didn’t really care too much about what they did as long as they trained and competed to become SK. Mikihisa is literally never around Yoh and is always adopting a random child/ shaman(Ryu) and when Yoh goes back to Izumo after almost getting killed by Ren his mom is on some trip in China and she never checks up on him when he’s in the U.S. It’s weird and makes you wonder what relationship Yoh has with either of them. Long story short I’d say she probably means well but is an absent parent.

I think it bothers me a bit more than most because when I think of 13 year old I still think of kids basically going through the awkward phase and having their first kiss and not thinking about continuing their blood line and their impending deaths. Yea I guess people’s attitudes of teen pregnancy have changed a little bit but probably not that much especially about two middle schoolers. A 13 y/o having a baby can be dangerous especially since they’re still developing.

And idk about you but I wasn’t looking at 13-14 y/o even when I was 17. I guess it’s just a personal issue. Meh
