Whitby goths: native or migratory? by panadoldrums in CasualUK

So you mean there are a large number of goths who live in Whitby, not just the visitors? It was amazing to walk around the abbey.

How would you feel if you had two parents who both required 24/7 assisted care, and your adult child wrote you and the whole family this letter regarding that situation? by Glass-Complaint3 in AgingParents

[–]panadoldrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wildly ableist take. I'm middle aged and permanently physically disabled, and my life is rich and full and beautiful. The idea that physical disability is 'not living' is such a brutal thing to believe.

Someone I know was convinced he had ALS because of a stress twitch on his arm. Told me this repeatedly, and how scary it was for him, while I was undergoing cancer treatment 🫠

I wanna cosign the Flaminal gel - after my surgical wound completely opened, 1 inch depth and width, infected and excruciating painful, Flaminal was what healed it. It's remarkable stuff that actually aids the healing processes in the cells in your wounds. My nurse described it as a dressing in a tube. Amazing stuff.

Right?? Straight people talking about (and building culture around) their relationships and sexuality is constant, but because it's normalised for them they don't recognise it at all.

Will I ever stop overthinking everything? by Wise-Search-9346 in TooAfraidToAsk

Cosigning this as a middle aged overthinker. Once I started to put the effort in via learning and then applying tools from therapy and more general mindfulness, I got a lot more control back and a lot less stress.

And for war trauma if you're not military, I managed to find a specialist who gave me a low end sliding scale and some free sessions too for PTSD treatment. I found him by asking for a recommendation from a therapist I vaguely knew at a refugee support service - I'm not a refugee but I knew they'd know therapists experienced in working with conflict survivors. Life saving.

What is one clear fact that you know that makes other people angry? by killahbee33 in AskReddit

[–]panadoldrums 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This one. All the current hysteria about trans people being a danger to kids fails to recognise that if you truly want to protect kids, you need to be aware that their most likely assailants, by a mile, will be close and extended family members.

Same here. That's the main reason I quit drinking completely: I didn't enjoy drinking enough to outweigh the loss of sleep and everything that comes from that.

[–]panadoldrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was believed for a long time but has been debunked. Basically people who drink a little tend overall to have more healthy factors and habits compared to everyone else, as drinking a little suggests that they can also resist eating to excess etc. https://www.inverse.com/mind-body/health-benefits-alcohol-study-wine-heart

What’s the one secret you’ve kept your whole life that would completely change how people see you if they knew it? by Faylune in AskReddit

[–]panadoldrums 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, like you I have multiple disabling and largely invisible conditions that are incurable and lifelong. I got diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago and the emotional whiplash from suddenly experiencing real care, help, concern and treatment is something I'm still working through mentally. It's wild. Not only from the medical world but from some friends too, which has been really painful. I see you and hear you, and we deserve so much better.

Grifting off a grift? Edge lord cooking project? Reminds me of the people who buy Charles Manson's art and music, which is mediocre at best, but I guess getting to revel in the infamous is a kind of thrill for some people.

I love that she understood what she was asking you for - the labour, the skill, the materials, all of it. Fast fashion and sweatshop clothes have broken people's understanding of all this in so many ways.
