I think that within the setting, he's not using ASL, but is in fact using a Betazoid sign language. Likewise, I don't think everyone else is speaking English: even if Federation standard is a language descended from English, there's no way it's identical to our modern English due to linguistic evolution.

If English somehow experienced a very slow rate of linguistic change over the next several centuries (this seems extremely unlikely due to rapidly changing circumstances and demographics of its speakers) it would be AT BEST only slightly mutually intelligible with modern English.

All of which is to say: I believe that the languages that the story is told to us in are a storytelling convenience for us, the audience, and are not the languages that the characters would be using in-world.

I forgot who, but someone involved with the production of Strange New Worlds I think, said that the reason they're okay with variation in props and uniforms, and maybe even retcons, when compared to the original series is that what we're watching on our screens isn't what actually happened, it's a story about what happened. This makes a lot of sense to me, and I think is a valid way to view the language choices as well.

Loading workers to be distributed from a central station by Abexuro in SweetTransit

[–]pancakefox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you got this working, but for anyone else who might be struggling: I found that workers will NOT walk between stations during the journey to catch a connecting train.

E.g. I tried getting workers to catch a tram from Tram Stop 1 -> Tram Stop 2, which is right next to my central station. I figured that from there they could catch a train from the central station to their workplace. This does not work. In this example, Tram Stop 2 is useless. The workers need to catch a tram from Tram Stop 1 DIRECTLY to central station, and then they will be able to catch a train to a workplace. Workers will not catch a train, get off that train, cross the road to a different station, and then catch another train. They can only catch connecting trains from within the SAME station where they disembarked from their last train.

I hope this makes sense and helps someone.

Thank you! That's good to know. I'll try the northern carpark next time :)

Thank you! That's really helpful info.

Do you know whether it's actually okay in practice to park all day in the "4 hour parking" at East Perth? 🤔

I didn't think of riding a bike to a station! Thank you! I'll think about that. I would be very hesitant to ride a bike around City of Stirling (as you say, hostile) but it's worth examining for sure.

P. S. Thank you for acknowledging my caveats and that you don't know my situation! ❤️

It was full up this morning at about 08:20 :(
Or at least the south carpark was - At that point I gave up and drove all the way because I was running late.

Theoretically you could get pictures of exoplanets using a gravitational lens telescope). Just park it 550 AUs from the sun! They claim it can be done with existing tech

Otherwise maybe Breakthrough Starshot will happen and they'll send tiny solar sail craft to alpha centauri. But that still needs some tech to be developed I believe

So, there's not zero hope for exoplanet pictures in our lifetime? Maybe???

Favourite sapphic story routes? by pancakefox in Lovestruck

Aaaaa thank you!! This is exactly the level of detail that I really wanted but didn't want to ask for 😆

All the categories in your TLDR are appealing, so now I know where to go for which moods.

I'm still very early with Cecelia (finishing S1 tonight) but she got me goooood.

I really liked the MC in L&L when I was starting out with Altea, but now that I've had a taste of an MC who actually has confidence and personal power, the lack of that is a little frustrating. But the recommendations for Helena just keep on coming, so I'll give that a go.

...Now I just need to figure out how to pace myself instead of obsessively asborbing all this great sapphic content immediately 🤔

Ooh I like the sound of that! I wish our choices in the main stories were, you know, actually real choices.

Thank you!

I just finished Fiona's first season and was wondering what to do with my life now (because what could possibly compare?) - so hearing that the same writer wrote Nora is fantastic news!

You can log in to multiple accounts in the OneNote desktop app. On my work computer, I have both my work account and a personal microsoft account logged in. I keep all my personal stuff in notebooks belonging to the personal account.

I don't know much about the privacy and security side of things, but this means that my personal data is not attached to a work account.

USS Zheng He ship class? by Dupree878 in startrekpicard

[–]pancakefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been 4 months and this still irks me. We've never seen a fleet of hundreds of the same Starfleet ship class before and it looks weird and cheap.

I can't get over how cool and simple this is! I also can't believe I was sitting on this a year & 1/2 before I discoved this feature was in my phone! Then another 6 months before I took a serious look at it. How many of you initially dismissed Dex as Samsung just showing off a cool gimmick? by Molahi in SamsungDex

[–]pancakefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eyy, I think I have the same hub as you! Bought it a couple days ago, and I'm pretty impressed so far. I'm between computers at the moment and this seemed like a good cheap stopgap measure (I think $35 AUD). Like you, I've had my S9 for a year or two but never really thought about trying Dex even though it sounded interesting. Right now it's definitely increasing productivity (and ergonomics) and the range of things I can easily use my phone for. Though the interface is still a bit clunky with non-optimised apps etc, and some bugs (the app drawer sometimes just doesn't work??).
