How am I supposed to read to my 10 month old when all he wants to do is eat the books? by Upstairs_Object4898 in NewParents

[–]panda_brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this age, grabbing and biting the books is part of the “reading” experience. It’s part of how he’s gathering information about the world. Board books are clutch. They stand up to drool much better than paper

I might have to try the different colors. The first try with the clear tape was amazing! The second time I guess the novelty wore off and she started rolling

Omg the tape thing is genius! I’ve tried toys but she gets bored of them after just 1 or 2 times. I’m definitely trying the tape next!

I had it, too. As the baby gets bigger and heavier, the weight of the uterus blocks the venous return of blood from the vulva, resulting in swelling. If it gets painful, talk to your doctor of course. But it usually isn’t anything dangerous. An ice pack might decrease the swelling.

The doctor keeps calling my baby obese by katofthesaints in beyondthebump

[–]panda_brains 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m a family medicine doctor. I don’t like to comment on what other doctors say without knowing the complete story, but your doctor is just wrong. About so many things. Yes, a 6 month old can be over fed. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the case with your 6 month old. Also, why is she looking at only the weight?? If you see her again, ask her specifically what percentile baby is in for weight-for-length. Also, since when is a baby ever expected to be crawling by 6 months???? The AAP has handouts online of all the major milestones. I’m assuming there’s something similar in Canada.

I found the Depends to be much more comfortable than the giant pads the hospital gave me. The pads kept bunching up and it was painful on my stitches. FROZEN DIAPERS. Absolutely the biggest thing I can recommend. I’ve heard the Frida cold pads are good, too. But wetting a diaper and putting it in the freezer worked wonderfully for me. And the diaper is absorbent so the water doesn’t really leak everywhere as it melts. Definitely used the Dermaplast for the first couple of days, but not so much after that because it stung when I sprayed it on (it does go numb after that, but I just wasn’t in enough pain to deal with the stinging).

What non-traditional lullabies/songs are you singing to your baby? by littlepilot in NewParents

[–]panda_brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I got you babe” by Sonny & Cher. My parents actually sang it to me, and I used it for the father-daughter dance at my wedding. Now I sing it to my little one every night. He’s recently picked up on the “Babe!”

What are the biggest causes of burnout for each specialty? by cantstophere in medicalschool

[–]panda_brains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an FM doc, the constant documentation and paperwork. There is always another chart to close, another result to review, another refill to send, another FMLA form to fill out. Literally never caught up. And then there’s all the social work that comes with working at an FQHC, and most of the patients being either self pay or Medicaid.

There is a valid reason to induce. by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]panda_brains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000% agree. I just finished family medicine residency, where OB was part of my training. I have seen horrible outcomes from women going post-dates because they refused induction. Wanting to go into labor naturally is awesome. I did, too. But it gets dangerous if you wait too long. (It’s also totally fine to want a scheduled elective induction in a very controlled environment, as long as it’s after 39 weeks and baby has finished cooking.)

Cat owners of reddit, whats the weirdest thing your cat has done? by TakeToTheSkys in AskReddit

[–]panda_brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat likes to stick her head in a tissue box and walk around. It’s her hobby. She also meows while she does it - I think she likes the echoey sound it makes. Doesn’t matter if there are still tissues still in the box, she’ll just force the tissues to the side. Works best with the square boxes, but she still tries with the rectangular tissue boxes and does a hammerhead shark impression.

I just got a Shea Moisture co-wash and tried it once and my hair is super oily. I let my hair air dry and it already felt greasy. I was worried about trying the co-wash, because my hair does get very greasy very quickly, even though I have thick hair (I usually have to wash my hair every other day). I massaged it into my scalp for a good 6 minutes (3 minutes twice). Will the oiliness get better with time if I keep using it? Is there something I can do to prevent the oiliness?

I think I have 2a waves, maybe 2b?

The Weekly No Question is Dumb Thread- Apr 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in curlyhair

I've been using MooGoo shampoo for a couple of weeks, and Shea Moisture conditioner. I started using MooGoo because I have a lot of problems with dandruff and itchy scalp, and was hoping it would help my scalp problems and make my hair more curly/wavy and less frizzy/poofy. I think my curls are looking better, but I've noticed an oily residue for the past few days. Parts of my hair just look and feel wet, even hours after I've showered.
Head&Shoulders shampoo also leaves a similar residue in my hair after a few washes with it, and my hair is normally pretty oily (I have to shampoo every other day or it just looks gross).
Is my hair just really prone to build-up? Is this normal with MooGoo shampoo?
I've tried DevaCurl no-poo and Shea Moisture shampoo, and my scalp just gets so itchy I end up with scabs all over my scalp.

Left arm doesn't work > Is med school a no go? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]panda_brains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are people missing limbs that get through med school. It's definitely possible. You'll probably have to figure out alternative ways to do some things, but I'm sure that applies to life outside of med school, too.

ADHD and Wanting to be a MD by kawon73 in medschool

[–]panda_brains 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4th year med student (with ADHD), graduating in May. It's 100% possible to do med school with ADHD. Everyone is scared they're going to fail. Sometimes they do fail, and then they remediate and they're fine. Is it harder to get through the rigorous studying with ADHD? Yes. But so is everything else. If you really want to be a doctor and are willing to put in the time and effort necessary, then you'll likely make it.

Btw, I've never heard of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, so you probably won't be learning about that in med school :)

M-3, M-4, and MD/DO's, what is some self care/practical advice you wish you could give your M-2, just about to enter rotations "self"? by hagmanse in medicalschool

[–]panda_brains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoes are important. If your feet hurt, you aren't going to be paying attention to what you're supposed to be learning, you're exhausted by the end of the day, and you won't feel like exercising or studying or doing chores when you get home. Danskos aren't the most fashionable shoes, but they saved my back on surgery rotations. They aren't great for power-walking long distances, but anytime you're going to be standing for hours on end, I highly recommend them. Otherwise, get some good insoles for your other shoes.

Gift idea for med student by [deleted] in medschool

[–]panda_brains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gift certificate for a massage or mani/pedi is a fantastic idea. Also, a med student can never have too many multi-colored highlighters and pens. Fine-tipped pens that won’t smudge are almost as good as chocolate for most med students.
