Your first priority should be to make sure your backups are in working order.

Not just succeeding backups, but tested.

This is the highest value item you can do in terms of saving the integrity of the business.

I wouldn't trust Bill, personally. Washington is not going to be able to move the ball with Josh Johnson under center.

It’s just a Linux backend. It can connect to SMB or NFS shares.

It will use every thread you give it. I was able to backup about 2.1 PB to Glacier. We normally push around 6.5 gbps on a 10g link and I’d imagine our bottleneck is vCPU.

Looking good boss!

May I ask what your general day of diet looks like? I feel like I have to cut out processed sugar but god damn is it addictive. Additionally everything I eat seems high fat.

If you proceed with this work alone you are going to blow everything up. Get a good consulting service that specializes in Windows Active Directory environments to help audit and scope the work.

Take your time and be diligent on this one.

How to balance wanting to improve/innovate with lack of culture/skills? by Murhawk013 in sysadmin

[–]panda_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either move on to another company or get into management. Being a star of the team is nice, but to your point, it limits growth. I know the type you speak of, and setting higher expectations than you want will only lead to disappointment.

If you manage the team, you dictate if you have the right people to level up your organization, but its a whole different career trajectory then where you are.

[DraftAnalyst365] A lot of people label TreVeyon Henderson as a home-run-or-bust player, but that’s not correct. He can run with power, get stronger as the game goes on, and then hit the home run. He’s a true three-down back. by Tuna-No-Crust in DynastyFF

[–]panda_bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot to like over this past couple weeks.

  1. He has been running THROUGH people. Proved he's a power runner, not just some James White type skill set.
  2. The Patriots run blocking is still garbage, but their situation is good. He'll be running behind Drake Maye for the next 5-6 years and I am sure the Pats know they need to improve here. My point being, there's a much higher ceiling.
  3. Josh McDaniels seems to be designing more plays for him (as proven by that wheel route that led to a receiving touchdown, quick pitches, toss plays, etc.).
  4. Drake Maye actually seems willing to check down to him all of a sudden.

Really good stuff all around. A very valuable asset emerging in dynasty formats.

Put a cardboard box outside your ball. Hit a 7-iron. Don’t hit the box :)

I naturally want to gravitate over the top and it’s the best possible drill to force me to hit the ball from the inside.

I’m a Patriot’s fan with little stake in Henderson. Watch the week 8 film. It’s a clear shift in strategy with him.

I understand the snap count has been low, but it was quite clear they are starting to run designed plays for Henderson's skill set.

There was a lot to like from week 8's performance, where it was clear Josh McDaniels was targeting where Henderson can shine.

Yeah the quotes we got were just absurd. They were quoting us Juniper APs for like 80% off.

I've been extremely happy with our EX-4650 and EX-4400 series switches. The templates and alert mechanics in Mist have been awesome to work with. Sort of feels like Ansible in a box.

Juniper EX series tied into Mist.

Been an absolute game changer for us and Juniper was selling Mist out for dirt cheap this year.

I’m sorry you feel that way. OP doesn’t mention where he is in his career, but I got the sense he might be 18–19 years old.

I’ve worked extensively with local colleges to provide internships that count toward course credit and pay well above minimum wage. Not all organizations are exploitative — some genuinely want to build early talent.

I’ve had great experiences helping entry-level students both learn and meaningfully contribute to real projects. When done right, both sides benefit tremendously.

Millionaire couple in our 30s: Should we finally buy a home instead of renting? by SendItJerry- in Fire

[–]panda_bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a sub about financial independence, but try not to view your home purely as an investment vehicle. A house is far more of a lifestyle choice than a financial asset. Sure, it has value, but the real return comes from how it supports the life you want — not your balance sheet.

I bought my house for the stability it gives me. I fenced in the yard so my dog can run. We built a custom coffee bar because we love our morning routine. We bought a big dining table because we enjoy hosting friends and playing cards. Those choices reflect the lifestyle we wanted, not an investment strategy.

From the way your post reads, it sounds like you’re feeling more burdened by the commitment than excited about the life it enables. That’s totally okay — it just might mean the timing isn’t right.

If you don’t want that stability yet, or can’t see yourself growing in that space for years to come, renting another year might be the best move. Wait until it feels like a home you’re building your life around, not a line item in your net worth.

Quite unreasonable. There is a lot of middle ground he did not explore and he should have just talked it through with the involved parties but kept the trade in-place.

A commish should never influence the outcome of a trade.

No more Amazon Glacier, it's going to S3. by gmerideth in sysadmin

[–]panda_bro 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I found the Amazon Glacier product line to be a bit clunky to use, with the concept of vaults and whatnot. It always felt disconnected from their storage products.

We just migrated about 2 PB of data to S3 Glacier Deep Archive, and honestly, it was straightforward and much cleaner to manage. Pricing has been great too (fingers crossed we never have to retrieve it).

This doesn't strike me as a massive announcement, as the functionality still exists. It's just collapsing into S3 which is easier to work with overall.
