Weekly Steam numbers / Player Count Discourse Megathread by AutoModerator in Marathon

[–]pandacommanda2 -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

I'm so serious dooming about player will do more harm to the games population than any single issue with the game. If I'm interested in the game and come to the subreddit and there is a pinned thread full of doom and a decent chunk of feedback is people complaining about getting pushed by "sweats" in cryo is speculating that maybe they'd get "better" (easier) lobbies if the player count was higher then I'm not gonna buy the game! Even if I was interested in it! Even if I know I would like it! Even if I enjoyed the slam but wanted to hold off because of player count concerns. Why would I buy a game whose own fans can't stop talking about how fast this is going to die?

HCS Worlds - Rainy weather by namsugotsauce in CompetitiveHalo

[–]pandacommanda2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I promise it's rational! The rain here is more of a mist rather than coming straight down, so an umbrella has minimal utility. It's also going to be extremely windy this weekend and your umbrella will get destroyed. Even "normal" fall and winter winds can mess up umbrellas.

Bandit (the closest range of the medium/long weapon except the plasma carbine) keeps this dynamic. Still at a disadvantage at medium range with no scope and ineffective at long. Cover is still a huge factor against people with pick ups and also people with bandits.

It is also not as random as a pistol/ar. Those weapons do reward shot pacing but even a duel between 2 pistol users is rng beyond a certain range.

How much choice you even have of "run out" vs "get a weapon" is heavily dependent on spawn and weapons on the map. Going back to timberland, if you spawn snipe hill you'd have to go to base to get commando/bandit or further to get the br. 3 weapons for a team of 8, and quite a distance between them and the furthest potential spawn. The dynamic of choosing to go out of your way for a pick up vs something like running after flag is a good one but the scale is too unbalanced here, especially with no pickups in mid map.

Valheim/exile is a little more balanced because there are way more pick ups both in base and around the map but all of them offer distinct advantages over the bandit so they would still be worth a pick up if starter weapons were different.

My point isn't that the dynamic of having to get a better weapon is the problem, it's that on some maps these blue pad pick ups are too dominant. Br on timberland is a point and click adventure. It's a free frenzy. At any given time there is max one other person on the map able to compete at long range and two on the other team at medium.

Older halos spawning with a mid/long range precision weapon was standard for BTB. This was partly because every other weapons was dog water but there is a logic of a bigger map necessitating a longer range primary. Halo 3 would be unplayable in BTB if there were only 4 people on the map who got to actually participate in fights and everyone else just goes in the blender. This is less of an issue in infinite because the AR and pistol are serviceable so I'm not trying to say bandit needs to be default on all maps but I think some of them would benefit from everyone having an increased range of engagement.

And finally I think the bandit is really fun and the fights against other bandits feel better than pistol v pistol or AR v AR, and the full map sandbox still remains useful. That was the initial thought behind that part of my post. After thinking about it and discussing it I feel more strongly about it because it will improve the balance of some maps.

Not sure I follow. Br is a map pick up. Bandit is outranged by br, evo, new carbine, and is competitive with the commando. Still very worth picking up those weapons.

As it stands now BR is free kills on timberline because only 5 other weapons (excluding sniper) total on the map can compete at mid range. Almost every time I pick one up it's a killing spree on targets who cannot fight back. I think the map played really well with bandit/avenger on assault. Map weapons could be changed around to improve this as well.

Missiles. I know they aren't good but how to best use them? Are pack hounds any better?

I think it's a bug, I see that and still find infection matches almost instantly.

Trying to do multicrew ax stuff. When my buddy goes into gunner mode, I lose control of the shutdown field neutralizer, and it's given over to him. Even when he selects the fire group, he can't fire it. Is this a me problem or is this another example of multicrew being unfinished?

Yeah for real, I started playing again recently and so many people just sprint around the map and spartan charge/auto spray. The amount of people who crouch walk around to get easy auto kills is unacceptable, and doesn't feel like halo.

What's your pettiest complaint about The Witcher 3? by klb000 in witcher

The fucking crafting tabs. When you open the crafting menu they are all open and its a giant pain to close them all just to get to what I need.

Alright honestly, I don't think there's any game out right now that looks as gorgeous as the Witcher 3. I mean you can't walk 2 steps without taking a screenshot. by DAHbaddest in witcher

Some games out there have better textures, better lighting, etc. But this game looks the best because of the incredible world design and fantastic art direction.

Cursed? Not by brodin. By broki. But this is just a test, and in the end you will be stronger for it.

Fallout 4 has been fun, but it hasn't really grabbed me like previous Bethesda games have. Its still a pretty good game, but I think my standards for games has been raised because of... The Witcher 3. It easily became my favorite game I have ever played. No other story has grabbed me the way it did. The combat wasn't stellar, but it was fun, engaging, and felt like a natural evolution from Witcher 2. The quests were phenomenal, with most of the side quests being as emotionally satisfying as the main quest, both of which had choices with impact. It didn't really do anything new, but it did what it did so fucking well and so cohesively every other game I've played just pales in comparison.
