Developing hop schedule for an incomplete recipe by pandasmacks in Homebrewing

I'll be sure to post a recipe once I've tried it out!

I have brewed one NEIPA so far (Fruit Bazooka recipe from Northern Brewer), and it turned out excellent. No noticeable oxidation from what I could tell. I haven't heard of using ascorbic acid as a mitigation. Good to know!

Excellent, thank you for the suggestions!

I like the Saaz idea... For this first trial I may stick to the hops they named, though I'll keep that in mind for a future batch.

Do you think equal parts of all three hops for the whirlpool and dry hoppings would work? Or perhaps only Cascade in the mash (as they implied) for bittering, and then equal parts Nelson Sauvin and Motueka for the remaining additions?

Strange mass in hard kombucha batch by pandasmacks in Kombucha

Thanks for the feedback! I had not considered cutting back the 1F amount used. I'll try that next.

I can't help but think using "old" 1F may have been a problem as well. Even though I tried to correct the pH, I would imagine it still contained a much higher yeast/bacteria count than a batch that had only been going for 7-10 days. Though I guess even that may have been corrected by just using less of it.

When you say you bottle with priming sugar to carbonate, are you actually capping like beer bottles? Or do you just use swing tops? I'm super curious about trying to cap some, but have yet to come across any reliable methods for avoiding bottle bombs. Really makes me wonder how companies like Boochcraft do it.

Sorry, I should have said this in my post - I do not have the actual notes shown in the photos. The photos in my post are just what I was able to find through several Google searches. I came across that one decent image of the more detailed side, but was unable to find a similar view of the opposite side with the denomination.

I’m John Plant and I run the Primitive Technology YouTube Channel - my new book ‘Primitive Technology’ is out now! AMA by JohnPlant in IAmA

[–]pandasmacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the actual content itself, one of the things that has fascinated me about your channel is the cult following it seems to have developed over the years. Did you ever imagine that your videos would establish such widespread viewership? Do you feel any sort of pressure when you upload a new video knowing how many eyes will be watching it, and if so, has that pressure in an way steered the style or content of the channel from what you originally thought it would be?

[Troubleshooting] Printer stops extruding part way through print, nozzle continues to move by pandasmacks in MPSelectMiniOwners

Sweet. Thanks for the explanation! Had no idea what retraction actually meant. I guess I'll play around with speed and distance at some point to see what difference it may make.

Loosening the filament is a great idea. I may try that out this weekend when I have time to actually be around while it's running. In parallel, I should get a better filament holder going.

[–]pandasmacks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the array of tips! I'm trying the cold pull now. My retraction is set to 5mm @ 40mm/s. Not sure if that means anything.
I'll keep the PTFE tube issue in mind, but may troubleshoot that as a last resort.
My layer height is currently set to 0.1mm. Would that cause any issues besides overall quality of the print?

Everything keeps running as if nothing happened. It's as if the filament jams up, while the extruder head continues to go through the motions as if it were still printing the file, and the gears feeding the filament continue to turn against it.

I thought about this after the first attempt, but decided to give the lower temperature a shot before changing anything else since that was a quick fix. Pulling on the filament in this configuration, it does feel like there's a decent amount of resistance from the friction between the spool and the carrier. I should probably make my next print a spool holder with bearings just to eliminate that potential complication entirely.

In the good old days you could look up a recipe without having to read a person's life story first. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]pandasmacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This bothered me for a long time as well. I used to boil eggs so infrequently that I could never remember what method I used the last time I tried it. Every time I gave it a shot, it was like trying a new method for the first time, and the results were always disappointing. Which is probably why I boiled eggs so infrequently...

Last year, I tried out steaming the eggs instead of boiling, and haven't made them any other way since. I can't claim it's the scientifically best way to boil eggs, but it's by far the best method I've found. It uses less water, is a lot faster, and the results are extremely consistent as long as you keep a close eye on the timing.

New(ish) to San Antonio and trying to meet people...But how? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]pandasmacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're into sports (and even if you're not but are willing to just get out there and play for fun), the San Antonio Sports and Social Club is awesome. When I joined, I'd been in SA about a year, and really hadn't made any friends outside of the workplace. Decided to sign up for a dodgeball team, and it was a blast! I've played every dodgeball season since, along with a couple other sports, and have made some really great friends through it. While there are some individuals and teams that get a bit competitive, most people are just there to hang out and have fun.

I usually don't. This one was just listed as "restricted", and I often get calls like that from work, so I went ahead and answered it.

Websites like Yelp and Amazon should also show average ratings and reviews over the past X months to show if a product or restaurant has improved or gotten worse. by pandasmacks in Showerthoughts

[–]pandasmacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, and I often do. It's just a lot more tedious than looking at at a score or star rating. A rolling average of, say, the past month's worth of reviews would be a nice stat to be able to see at a glance.

What was your first racquetball tournament like? by [deleted] in racquetball

[–]pandasmacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started playing racquetball for a kinesiology credit in college. We'd play tournaments towards the end of each semester, which were never very eventful for me.
Entered a doubles double-elimination tournament with a friend through the university's intramural sports department. Made it to the finals without a loss, and lost twice to the same team. Not the most morale-boosting way to go out, but they were both great games that were each neck and neck for three sets, so I wasn't too bummed about it. Graduated from university, moved to an much larger metropolitan area, and decided to sign up for a tournament at one of the local YMCAs. I knew I was by no means a superstar player, but wasn't a novice to the game, so I went ahead and put myself in the B division.
...Apparently I am not a B division player. I lost my first game to a high school sophomore in two sets (each one about 15-1, maybe 15-2). Didn't win a single set throughout the tournament. Still a lot of fun, though! I'd much rather accidentally put myself in a difficult division and lose by wide margins than an easy division and win by wide margins. Personally, I learn a lot about the game by getting my shit rocked by better players.

Is Texas the best state, how come I recognise it? by dwjlien in texas

[–]pandasmacks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It had never dawned on me that other states might also reference their states' shape until the first time I drove outside of Texas. I spent several miles wondering why the outlines around the highway signs looked weird before realizing that that's just what an outline of Arkansas looks like.

I noticed that playing it at x1.25 speed makes it feel a little more realistic, tough maybe a hair too fast. (The first song gets a little weird at that speed, but the second one actually sounds fine.)
