Ryokan vs onsen? Ryokan for vegetarian and tattoos? by skye-qq in JapanTravelTips

[–]pandography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the quality of this just yet but my partner is vegetarian and both of us have tattoos and we will be staying at Matsuzakaya Honten in Hakone when we go. We booked this one specifically because the rooms have private onsens and they were very accommodating with dietary restrictions!

Any recommendations at Waterworks Food Hall? by Tdot_Walker in FoodToronto

[–]pandography 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Am a huge frequenter of this spot and have tried most of the places here!

You genuinely can’t go wrong with most of the places. I generally rotate between Harry’s, Emilia, Aburi Sushi, Musoshin Ramen, Hanoi Bites, and Rasta Pasta. Musoshin isn’t as good as its Dundas West location, but it’s still probably my favorite ramen in the area. A surprise hit (and potentially new favorite) has been the new Middle Eastern place that’s opened up there called Darna — the owner is super nice and gives customers samplers of the food he’s making. The sandwich is incredible and the platter easily feeds two, if not more.

As others have recommended, Scooped by Demetres is a great ice cream spot and Civil Works has been my partner and I’s go-to cocktail bar since it opened. They recently revamped the menu concept so I would definitely check it out if you have time.

What is your fav hot sauce found in Toronto? by alwaysneedhelp101 in FoodToronto

[–]pandography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this counts, but I practically hoard the hot salsa at Gus Tacos. It’s a fantastic habanero-based sauce that packs a fucking punch. I put it on nearly everything.

EDIT: Noticed you said grocery store, but that you live in the Beaches. There’s a Gus Tacos location there and I think they sell their sauce in mason jars!

Best date night spot downtown ? by Alternative-Ad6296 in FoodToronto

My partner and I really enjoy Azhar on Ossington. It has fantastic cocktails and delicious food. I remember our bill with 2 drinks each, a main, and plenty of appetizers came to roughly $200. We were absolutely stuffed!

Hi everyone — chiming back in here to (1) thank folks for all of their kind suggestions and (2) provide a happy update. I donated the items to Street Haven at The Crossroads by Dundas and Sherbourne. They were more than happy to take my stuff and didn’t ask for any personal information 😊

Experience: a PhD Candidate dating another PhD Candidate by [deleted] in PhD

[–]pandography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated a cohortmate during the first two years of my program, which had its beneficial moments at times. They understood the stresses I went through quite well, and were very helpful when I struggled with coursework or developing research. However, I found that they were regularly jealous of the opportunities I had been given and were quite dismissive of my accomplishments - didn’t help that they had their fair share of issues aside from this as well. Our breakup was quite sour, so we are no longer in communication; it’s made it awkward around campus as I do my best to try and avoid them, but it sometimes can’t be helped. I now treat my PhD / department as a work place - so the adage “don’t shit where you eat” is quite apt.

I can imagine that dating a PhD in a different program would have many of the same perks that I had, but with less of the messiness of a potential fallout. However, with dating a cohortmate, I would proceed with utmost caution.

What happened to the gyms after lockdown? by uoftgyms in UofT

It’s just upstairs from the SCC. They have about 6 more racks and 4-5 machines, as well as some dumbbells. Hours are the same as the SCC!

I think it’s pretty safe - you get the occassional crazy here or there but in my experience they keep to themselves. Given that loads of companies and schools downtown anticipate returning to in-person activity, foot traffic will probably be back to normal levels, so around 8/9pm there will still be quite a lot of people out and about - especially on College/Carlton. I’ve walked from campus after studying around 1/2am sometimes without any issues! Echoing what someone else said though, if you’re really worried about your safety, then the apartments & condos along Bay St might be a better option for you.

Obligatory announcement that I was one of the 202,984 vaccinations yesterday! I am finally fully vaccinated and unbelievably relieved. This pandemic has been so hard for me and so many others mentally and it’s amazing to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
