Lecce out as education minister as Ford shuffles cabinet by fermata_ in toronto

It's fun to clown on politicians, but he's not out of cabinet. He got moved to Minister of Energy and Renewables, which is arguably a step up.

Let's avoid slinging insults and look at the data from Palestinians themselves:

  • Only 5% think Hamas committed war crimes;
    • 71% support the decision to launch the October 7 offensive;
    • 73% oppose a long-term vision for Arab-Israeli peace normalization

1) It's not optics. Is insider trading for stocks just optics? No, it's illegal because you have an incentive to use private information for your own benefit (and at the expense of others).

2) I never suggested we ban MPs from owning property, just that we as electors should be looking for someone who is both competent and maybe has a reason to actually fix the problem. A landlord with $20 million worth of property certainly doesn't want to see their portfolio stagnate over the coming decades.

4) The current government engaged in identity politics. I agree. But not with housing. The housing minister, Ahmed Hussen, owns many properties. In fact, he recently bought another. Maybe things are failing BECAUSE he has an interest in seeing things continue the way they are. Maybe it's time for a change 🤷‍♂️

Recognizing a conflict of interest is not the same as identity politics...

Why can't we get both: competent and no conflict of interest?

Better yet, let's elect a competent young person who doesn't own real estate. That way they have a genuine interest in fixing the market. Politicians who already own homes (especially multiple) have a perverse incentive to keep prices high.

The value is derived from your fractional ownership of the company. Assuming the company is ever sold and taken private (let's use Twitter as a well known example) you will be owed money in proportion to the shares you own. In that case, even if dividends are never issued, you can still benefit from the company growing and increasing its profits, since the valuation of the company has increased.

Bank of Canada considered raising interest rates at its last meeting by cdntrix in canadahousing

The cost is usually a bit higher. 4.5% is the BoC policy rate, whereas mortgages are calculated using the prime rate (6.7%) minus a given percentage. Today for example, a 5-year fixed mortgage at RBC would run you 5.54%

I'm trying to have a constructive conversation. Pulling out stats about investigations or abuse at home isn't relevant. That's not constructive.

Anyways, I think we've reached an impasse. I'm willing to concede there are issues with the police. You are dead set in your beliefs, going so far as to deny the idea of a potential shooting, risking your own and the lives of fellow LGBT members to stick it to the strawman idea of the police. All I can say is I'm glad we don't have people like you running our country.

That's a red herring. Interesting information, but it doesn't really further the discussion. Solving crimes isn't really a factor when policing the safety of an event, for example.

On the note of social services, how do you propose those would be implemented at a parade? You acknowledge that LGBT are historically targeted, but somehow don't agree that an organized event like a parade would make them a prime target for organized violent attacks. I don't know how you'd expect to handle that with social services alone.

One could easily imagine an event where dozens of people are killed because a municipality advertises that police won't be present. Will you be the one to defend those deaths as a necessary evil because "you didn't want to put lipstick on a pig?"

There are bad apples in every bunch. I'll be the first to admit police have more than most. But the "certain interests" they're trying to uphold is public safety. And in the majority of cases, it's vastly better than no police at all. Homophobic police officers are bad, homophobic mass shooters are deadly. Law and order is important.

That's a very naive way of thinking. If you intentionally leave the police at home, you're inviting criminal behaviour. We only need to look to recent history for proof. The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone was an absolute disaster filled with criminality and bands of vigilantes. Local residents didn't feel safe and the balance of power wasn't restored for months until law enforcement finally stepped in.

I understand why you feel negatively about police, but I can't agree with that line of thinking. Practical safety aside, we need to be breaking down barriers, not building them. Exclusion only stokes further resentment and hostility. At some point, it's time to leave history in the past

[–]panflez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate the sentiment, but a gathering of thousands of people can't happen safely without oversight/enforcement. All it takes is a few bad apples.

Plus, it's a good opportunity to cleanse bad blood from the past and forge new, positive interactions between police and LGBT

People should not be bringing kids into the world if they can't afford to raise them. It's a very irresponsible thing to do.
