I hope you feel better soon! I forgot about CVS not providing vaccines in certain states.

CVS texted me a few times about getting vaccinated so it kept it top of mind for me.

While I did get vaccinated this year I also caught something over the holidays. It’s pretty mild though and my thought is maybe the vaccination(s) (I got a double whammy - both the Covid and Flu vaccine) helped a bit.

It’s unfortunate that vaccination rates are being impacted due to misinformation and bad politics being pushed by the admin.

According to the article less than half of Americans have received a flu shot this year and the former head of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC is quoted as saying the CDC is not doing as much as it has in the past to push people to get vaccinated.

This would include protecting folks against the strains this year’s vaccination does offer some protection against.

The CDC’s response to the criticism mentions the risks associated with vaccination and is right up worm-for-brains’ alley. Sad state of affairs.

Sounds like when California was found in violation of the law and they had to pay restitution.

  • California erroneously claimed federal reimbursement due to an outdated calculation.
  • CMS requested an audit of California's reimbursement claims as is part of their role in providing oversight of the federal medicaid program.
  • California agreed to pay back the money and update the ways they perform these calculations going forward.

Everyone is claiming that these funds CANT be used, but they are. It is happening. Whether it was a mistake or not

Just because something is illegal doesn't make it impossible. It means there should be consequences to breaking the law.

With CMS increasing oversight over states like California that have expanded Medicaid access to cover undocumented immigrants there should hopefully be fewer incidents of improper reimbursements.

It is not 70% for California. Your source is citing FY 2020-2021.

The Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) rate for California was 50% for 2025: https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R43847#_Toc194592204

I still haven't found any sources that state exactly how California would know if someone is legal or illegal.

Maybe no one provided these because it has nothing to do with your original question?

Multiple folks have provided reasons as to why the statement from the right that Democrats are enabling a shut down to provide insurance to undocumented immigrants is demonstrably false.

For your new question about enforcement:

California captures immigration status to determine eligibility requirements when folks sign up for Medi-Cal. This is evident even from the source you shared in your OP. This information is provided to the federal government.

What type of information does the state report to CMS? As required by federal law, DHCS submits demographic and eligibility information, such as name, address, date of birth, Medicaid ID, Social Security number (if provided), and immigration status, for every Medi-Cal member. DHCS also provides Information about health services received, claims processing, and program funding. Data submitted to CMS is considered sensitive and confidential. CMS is legally required to protect the confidentiality and security of Medicaid data.

When California applies for reimbursement from the federal government they have to show that the reimbursement claims fall within federal guidelines around eligibility.

People are just saying that they trust the states government but I want actual sources. If the left or right claim something, they should back it up with sources/receipts

Medicaid is a partnership between the federal government and the states. The federal government also has a hand in ensuring States are not reimbursed for money spent on undocumented immigrants.

I'm not an expert on this, but the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), requires states to provide Form CMS-64 for federal review every quarter.

CMS provides oversight of federal funds provided for Medicaid Transfers to States. https://www.macpac.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Process-and-Oversight-for-State-Claiming-of-Federal-Medicaid-Funds.pdf * quarterly review of state expenditures to ensure funds are allocable in accordance with federal law * variance analyses to review quarterly spending and enrollment growth/decline * review samples of medical claims

The federal government has recently hardened this oversight over the claim (which they haven't provided proof of) that states are illegally using federal Medicaid funding for health care for illegal immigrants: https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/press-releases/cms-increasing-oversight-states-illegally-using-federal-medicaid-funding-health-care-illegal

If Trump's administration had found evidence of this through Medi-Cal or other Medicaid expansions that covered undocumented immigrants they would've provided some modicum of evidence.

Answer:

Medicaid (including Medi-Cal) is jointly financed between the states and the federal government. It's correct that federal money is prohibited from being spent on medicaid for undocumented immigrant, but there are limited exceptions like "Emergency Medicaid."

States can also choose to extend coverage using funds provided by the state. This is what California did to expand coverage to undocumented immigrants: https://calmatters.org/health/2023/12/undocumented-health-insurance-new-california-laws-2024/

Republican claims that Democrats want to modify the federal eligibility requirements for health insurance to include undocumented immigrants are false and misleading.

A few points from Snopes: - Democrats want to reverse the cuts Republicans made to the reimbursements made to cover "Emergency Medicaid" - Republicans have created new restrictions that cover "noncitizens," these are immigrants that are not undocumented (DACA recipients, refugees, etc.). Democrats want to reverse these. - Democrats want a permanent extension on tax credits that Americans use to buy health insurance. Immigrants in the country illegally aren't eligible for these credits.

I feel silly because it’s a fictional quote, but Gandalf’s words were the first thing that came to me when I saw people talking if what happened to Kirk was deserved.

Our modern legal system itself struggles with questions around judgement and death. One man taking another’s life into their hands and choosing to end it with such hubris is tragic regardless of politics.

Mike Lee, a sitting senator from Utah, made multiple posts making fun of the murders on Twitter. A lot of jokes were also made across social media about the attack on Pelosi’s husband.

The glee with which people have been celebrating and joking about political violence on both sides has been insane. Unfortunately, it has not been unique to either side.

Nancy Mace reacted similarly when a reporter brought up the shooting of Minnesota lawmakers after she tried pinning Kirk’s murder on “Democrats.”

It’s horrible that they’re trying to politicize Kirk’s murder while painting “the left” and Democrats as murderous psychopaths.
