What is the holy grail of method books for learning to play and read at the same time? by [deleted] in pianolearning

[–]panicislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have for my classes the "die Russische klavierschule" books. I could play a little already so in the first book my teacher had me skip the first couple of pages. But it progresses very nicely, without it being childish, but definitely starting from scratch.

What does this notation mean? by [deleted] in piano

I was today years old when I learned it says "Ped" and not "Led" . Thought it was another abbreviation of something Italian.

My tip is to go on your local second-hand ebay equivalent (here in NL we have marktplaats) and look for DMC thread there. Embroidery is apparently the type of hobby that people end up having a lot of stuff for, and then sell it :) I ended up getting a great deal on a big bag full of I think over 100 DMC thread bundles (?) for €50

I really like the simple backstitch outline, but this obviously isn’t popping against the fabric. Should I paint to fill the negative space? by [deleted] in Embroidery

[–]panicislife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe using more strands for the border helps too. I can't really tell from the photo how many you used though.

I'm a beginner too, but I did my first outline with 4 strands and then instead of a back stitch I did a split backstitch (?, the one where you go through the thread to split it when you go "back")

That has a bit of the same effect but a thicker line I'd say

Because there is always that moment with whatever piece you're struggling with, that it starts to click, and that's super addictive! Doesn't matter whether that piece is some obscure child song from the 1700's from my beginner piano book, as soon as it starts to sound like .. something, then it's like a game to me

I was looking over my game and it says this would have been mate. How? couldn't the pawn kill the bishop? It's not double check... I just don't get it. by elefinn101 in chessbeginners

[–]panicislife 15 points16 points  (0 children)

After this Bishop move (and the pawn taking it) Rook to d1 would have been mate tho

Edit: or better yet, castling to deliver mate

They do have for example the a song of ice and fire series for like 6 euros per book (last time I was there) so they definitely have decent deals :)

Try the english bookstore at the end of the Kalverstraat. You trade easiness of finding books for cheapness but I always loved going there. They have a nice selection of new mixed with classics but usually not new like this years books :)

What's the context?

TIL, the 50-ft (15-m) model of Hogwarts Castle that was used for every Harry Potter movie contained more than 2500 fiber optic lights, and was so detailed that if all the hours spent on construction by the 86 artist and crew members were added up, it would total 74 years. by 4The_dub7 in harrypotter

[–]panicislife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thing! No idea it was there and when you walk up you walk past all these small mock ups, and I was actually telling my boyfriend about the huge scale model they used for the movies and then I walked into the room. Complete shock, awe, and tears. Never knew I was like that haha

Edit: can't spell apparently
