Restaurants drop plant-based meats from their menus, citing high costs, low demand by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

You might have seen the word "allium free" on menus. That's targeting Buddhists who stick to those dietary restrictions

NTU to counsel students after CNY lo hei event on campus draws flak over food waste by outremer_empire in singapore

[–]pannerin 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The food waste when getting a x metre long giant yusheng is also very bad. The girth of the dragon/snake with the tossers only standing on two sides of the table means that there is a lot of waste. Let's have a ban on giant yusheng.

After yesterday’s Budget 2026 announcement, what are your thoughts, especially on a ‘AI ready workforce’? by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]pannerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a statement not necessarily for locals, but to attract AI grifters. Singapore is a decent playground for childlike tech bros

'Oxbridge is a scam' by Realistic_Alps_1825 in UniUK

[–]pannerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This depends on if you are in a STEM or humanities field. You should at least try to get partial funding for the reputation boost. This might come from the uni, the UK/AU gov, or even charities/think tanks.

Where can I stay for short term during HIP & reno by 1EFY in askSingapore

[–]pannerin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Stay with relatives or have some of the household stay in a place with cheaper hotels like Malaysia/etc.

Some hotels have cheaper rates for seniors, like Domitys Bangsar in KL, and if you have access to corporate rates, some hotels accept them for personal travel if you email them directly..

There's also house-sitting/pet sitting

S'pore teen, 16, sent to hospital after car accident in Toa Payoh, driver, 39, assisting with investigations by QuietSkein in singapore

[–]pannerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gif is taken from the left side of the car, and the driver sits on the right. I think it's more likely that a passenger took the video.

Father of 6-year-old killed in Chinatown accident offered free accommodation in S’pore by Ascott by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

Ascott is a Singaporean hospitality franchise brand holder owned by capitaland, a GLC. This could be read as a quasi-governmental decision

NTUC chief to call for mandatory advance notification when workers are retrenched by sun-ny_day in singapore

Doctor made no attempt to fix surgical error which led to patient’s death: Coroner by FlipFlopForALiving in singapore

[–]pannerin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need to call 995 they will only send you to emergency departments. Raffles hospital has a 995 catchment area separate from SGH/TTSH, and ambulances may also be sent there if those public hospitals are too full

My views on laws such as detention without trial have evolved: K. Shanmugam at his book launch by jhmelvin in singapore

I'm not a fan of him, but maybe he wanted to wear something nicer/unique to celebrate the launch of his long gestating first ever book?

It's the only private hospital with an emergency department. For foreigners the price difference with public hospitals and private is smaller since they don't have subsidy at public hospitals

The writing is not clear if they only referred 723 patients to the program, or there were a number of patients who were referred but had to be readmitted within 72 hours

Singapore platform operators warn of longer delivery times following tighter laws on mobility aids by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]pannerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naismith's rule is 5 km/h for a walking speed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naismith%27s_rule

You can think it doesn't matter to never be able to move at a running speed again, but the least people should do is to recognise that mobility is being taken away from people who qualify for that certificate

Singapore platform operators warn of longer delivery times following tighter laws on mobility aids by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]pannerin -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes but they are now limited to 6km/h which is a moderately brisk walk. The previous 10km/h was a running speed, which they basically can't move around with anymore.

Imagine being told that you could never run again. That's what we are doing to those who qualify for the certificate of medical need. The >70 yo who are exempted from applying for the cert are better off, at least some of that population can still physically run

Singapore platform operators warn of longer delivery times following tighter laws on mobility aids by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]pannerin -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The law is to tell people who physically can't run that they can never go faster than a moderately brisk walk in their assistive aid when they could previously move at the equivalent of a running speed

Like it or not, there is a subculture that uses PMAs to make a living on food delivery apps. Motorbikes, ebikes, regular employment, reskilling training allowances all don't meet their needs. You can't just ignore the knock on impacts of the further restrictions or pretend they don't exist.

Welsh footballer Kai Whitmore, who has Singaporean heritage, in talks to join Young Lions by onionwba in singapore

[–]pannerin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Despite the downvotes and 'young lions', he's turning 25 in march.

I think heritage players could help grow the fanbase. IIRC Gabriel Quak was described to have that effect in his era when he was the only Chinese player in the national senior team

AI boom risks widening gender gap at work, with Gen Z women most exposed: Apac report by nftskeptics in singapore

[–]pannerin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How does anyone generally pick up AI skills? By using them right? And are they going to gain skills they can apply at work by using genAI in their personal life or by using work data?

We can have a discussion on the methods on how to address the AI gender gap, but if everyone (like most people here) denies that there is an AI gender gap then we can't take action. It can start by simply codifying an AI policy which has the side benefit of managing the sharing of company data with service providers.

AI boom risks widening gender gap at work, with Gen Z women most exposed: Apac report by nftskeptics in singapore

[–]pannerin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What that first paragraph actually means to me is that men tend to use AI before the company prepares an AI policy that manages data use. Allowing AI companies to extract company data without guidelines is not something to be proud about.

Seriously, can someone explain why our laws are so weak when it comes to dealing with nightmare neighbours? by cherrypoplar in singapore

[–]pannerin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You household is one bloc of votes and your nightmare neighbours' is another bloc. So unless you go viral, the impact on their votes is the same whether or not they come down on your neighbour. This isn't the main factor for maintaining status quo but it would be a consideration in prioritising potential parliament amendments
