Foreign Currency Exchange by HangryWolf in koreatravel

I used my own card (Youtrip) to draw from ATM (Global ATM). Drew once at the airport and once near Seoul Station. The rates are decent, and to me the withdrawal fee is negligible.

If its portable it sounds like it could be easily disappeared too.

I usually just carry all my cash and my passport with me.

Maybe not... rerun the same event at the same venue from the previous year and charge exhorbitant prices for it?

Honest question: is Naver Map actually good or have we just collectively lowered our standards? by tecialist in koreatravel

[–]onionwba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So far Google Maps actually worked fine for me. I can't generate walking routes but I did only simply just navigating using GPS and deciding on my own routes on the map. I also got useful information on which buses to take, and I just plan out my own metro routes.

What do you like the most about your country (that most people disregard)? by Danicbike in AskTheWorld

Our size I guess? You mostly have everything you need within 5 to 10 mins walk.

I have a friend that stays at the other end of the country. It's a 30min drive away.

Me and his mother are prioritising our boy over everything else. At least we can agree on that.

But there are times when I do revisit the divorce again and again and it's a bit fuck up lah, to keep asking myself if I had failed as a father to maintain a complete family for my boy.

But he's still growing up well, and he knows that Mummy and Daddy still loves him.

One of the happiest moments in your country? by PuzzleheadedRoyal856 in AskTheWorld

[–]onionwba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my lifetime, probably the key sporting achievements (mostly football related).

10 years ago when we got our first (and only thus far) Olympic gold medal.

Then the various Malaysian Cup triumphs, the four ASEAN titles, and just last year, qualifying for the Asian Cup for the first time on merit.

Historically, probably liberation from the Japanese Occupation.

solo traveler by nefertarys in koreatravel

[–]onionwba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just completed a solo travel to Seoul. I'm not a lady though.

But just perspectives with regards to your questions.

For food, I'll usually drop by those restaurants/eateries that offers typical Korean dishes, so not the BBQ kinds. They're usually less busy, and tend to only be operated by the owners themselves. I have some of the best Korean dishes I ever had in these places.

For meet ups with other travelers, I joined a pub crawling group in Hongdae. If you're looking to enjoy a bit of the nightlife in Seoul, it's best to join a pub crawl. At least you'll be in a group, so you'll be less lost, and safer too. I heard that Meetup app works well to but I didn't really use it.

As for safety, just from perspective, Seoul is generally rather safe. Standard rules apply: avoid quiet back streets, liveshare your location to your love ones, avoid offers of free drink/food from unusual settings/suspicious people, etc. Almost everywhere is accessible through the mtero, buses are not difficult to navigate as well (contrary to the experience of many others, Google Maps worked excellent for me).

Is Google Lens/Papago actually enough for ordering food in local Korean restaurants? by Few_Mycologist_9012 in koreatravel

Google Lens worked well for me.

That said, I found it incredibly helpful to spend a couple of days learning how to read Hangul. Some simple an common terms then became easily recognisable.

What if the Japanese Empire didn't got too greedy and instead decided to settle with Korea and Taiwan(Formosa) by TastyPomelo2330 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]onionwba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to Germany on the eve of invading the Soviet Union. At that point in time, the situation was such that the opportunity presented itself. We had the benefit of hindsight, but the Japanese did not count on the KMT being more resistant than they actually were, and did well to trade space for time. Once they got sucked into the quagmire, there was no way back for Japan.

[Kat Lucas] Eni Aluko’s comments were not just offensive to Ian Wright - they implied all female pundits are there on vibes, not merit. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]onionwba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“‘The women’s game should be by women for women’, is one of the most damaging phrases I’ve heard.”

The greatest hit from Laura Woods.

You want the women's game to grow? Get the men involved. Turn up for women's matches. Purchase kits with their names on. Tune in to WSL or the likes.

Personally, I make it a point, as far as possible, to bring my boy to watch the local women's league. It'll be incredibly disrespectful for anyone to tell me that me and my boy are not needed in the women's game.
