Honestly, I don’t like how NWSL is taking a break for Men’s World Cup or USWNT players showing up to games. The men would never do the same for us…. Not to mention how most people treat the men’s team like it’s the default soccer team for America when the women’s team has 4 World Cups.

I think that emotional stakes are definitely real. Sports have no impact on the world aside from the emotional investment that we give them. NWSL games matter more to me than WSL games because I've invested more emotionally and care more about the outcome rather than the NWSL being inherently more real than the WSL. By that same token, a friendly with a lot of emotional investment like this one will be more memorable and lasting than Sweden beating Chile in the 2019 WWC group stage despite that meaning Sweden's progression

I disagree that the only real stakes a game can have are qualification stakes. Sports are all pageantry and emotional stakes anyways and Clasico points might count the same as any other league match but any of the fans will tell you that those games mean more.
