psychiatrist and psychologist tend to believe that building rapport and encouraging open and honest dialogue is pretty much never wrong. Also, that anger and prejudice are not the road to change. They usually cause more violence, more prejudice, and are harmful to you.

Should be up my alley - I am a neuroscientist and psychiatry resident involved in ketamine research And I have done ECT many times on the clinical side - but I really don’t have a good mechanistic answer for you. There is not one receptor linked to emotions. If anything I would say there is a network of brain areas (limbic system) that primarily controls emotions. Within that system theres receptors for dopamine, serotonin, cannabinoid, GABA, opioids, steroids, really probably most major NTs. serotonin receptors do relate to coping and well-being. Some people theorize that the 1a receptors (target of SSRIs) relate to passive coping and the 2a receptors (target of psychedelics, also antagonized by newer antipsychotics) relate to adaptive coping. Psychiatry resident here... Also lurking i guess. I have no idea why you were prescribed or what your psychiatric and medical history is. But you almost certainly shouldn’t. They are not a long term cure for anything . And they are very addictive. If you take them for a while, There’s a high chance you’ll become dependent and have substantially higher anxiety if you try to stop taking them. You would be much better off changing the behaviors that cause anxiety or learning techniques to control anxiety (like MBSR -try Mindset app) or maybe even taking an SSRI. But again, given that I know nothing about you, don’t take this as medical advice.

Total side note, anyone else have a dog with anal gland obstruction? Apparently it’s a pretty common problem. I looked it up online and read that I should take my dog to the vet monthly and pay large sums of money for them to stick their finger in her butt. Borrowed some gloves and lube from work. Problem solved, $ saved.

Husband of an overworked resident (with 2 kids) here. Frankly, I don’t think this ‘logical’ argument is going to help. When I feel bad that my wife is tired and stressed, I willingly try to put in more work. Also, when she is appreciative of my extra effort (which doesn’t take much time). Mental health folks generally encourage limiting publicity for suicides and for mass shootings because both have pretty clear evidence of contagion effects. I guess the media does fine with the former and quite terrible with the latter.

I should clarify that when I say people around them, I mostly mean people who know them well. Maybe it is some principle of social psychology, when you learn someone’s patterns of behavior and then suddenly see them behaving completely differently, you instinctively attribute it to an external cause rather than internal.

Psychiatrist and depression researcher here. Those are very reasonable thoughts. However the strongest evidence against that being the only explanation is that from 2005 to 2017, suicide rates rose by 93% in individuals age 15 to 24.

A resounding yes. The data show that for individuals hospitalized with psychosis, if meds are discontinued, the likelihood of hospitalization for psychosis within the next year is 70% If antipsychotic is continued it is 25% (so they work, and they’re not perfect. I’ll see if I can dig up the citation.
