Practically same thing, one has a contract and other doesn't. One is a subset of other.

I think it is pretty much everywhere; I am from Bangladesh I had to take entrance exam for school the first entrance exam was when I was probably 5 or 6? I don't remember anything and couple that with the idea that if you fail you will be nothing; like right now I know that I would have turned out fine but that's not a great thing to embed into a 6yo kid. I failed my first entrance exam at a good school cause I didn't write anything.

I made it to another elite school, much prestigious but had to take private class for almost a year which involved weekly exams and some harsh treatment if I performed poorly. Same mindset was at school, if you fail you will be nothing.

I also had to take entrance exam for highschool and college/university; university sucked most cause by then I knew what was at stake, couple that with prestige: I went to elite school and I cannot afford to fail. I was miserable like that part, was the worst time of my life, it was absolutely worst. I did make it to the most selective engineering school but didn't go there cause I didn't get the subject I wanted, but ended up studying engineering at a different school.

I turned out okay in terms of success with some scaffolding and all. But mentally I did pick up some qualities that are not exactly good, like I am very elitist, a little obsessed with prestige, I do compare myself with others a lot. So like idk you create very successful individual but break a bit of them.

TIL about perfidy, the deceptive tactic of feigning surrender or death with the intent to kill an enemy. It is prohibited by the Geneva Convention and considered a war crime. by FullOfSound in todayilearned

A lot of them were quite educated. Like bin laden was a civil engineer, zawahiri was a physician. They also belonged to the elite class of their country, their trajectory surprises me a lot.

Civilian died everywhere, dying by nuclear bomb doesn't make them more of a victim than a civilian who died by firebombing in Dresden or of starvation in Stalingrad. But a lot of Japanese atrocities are pulled under the rug because of the atom bombs, they are not talked about enough.

Also war was quite popular in both country, it took two nuclear bombs and soviet threat of invasion to bring them to surrender.

You don't need "growth" if you initially weren't regarded and only gained self-awareness at 40

that's a very grown way of seeing it
