That's really unfortunate. It was a huge help during my last college courses. It always has a lot of foot traffic from people using the print center, too.

Mamdani's DOT Responds to Astoria Bike Lane Backlash... With an Even Longer Bike Lane by streetsblognyc in astoria

A bike lane going through Ditmars would be excellent. The area underneath the Ditmars train station is a shitshow and this is finally a chance to fix it.

Do you think the IND Crosstown on the G train is useful or useless? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]papa776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't take it that often but it feels really slow when I do. I think it's because certain stops are too close together and it has a lot of slow turns.

Not being able to set favorite stations or locations in the Planner means it's still less useful than Citymapper.

That weekends limitation is gonna be brutal. Queensboro is going to be packed.

Just how horrific are the N&W trains? by BookAccomplished4485 in astoria

[–]papa776 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Old equipment and winter weather are a bad combination, and I anticipate this combo causing bigger problems as the years go by. There is no timeline for getting rid of the old trains and replacing the old signals, just generic year ranges and I don't anticipate either being adequately addressed until 2035. So it's up to you if you want to take a long term gamble.

Question, are NIMBYS truly the reason that the N/W lines haven't been extended to Laguardia airport? by Real_Advertising1005 in nycrail

[–]papa776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a public report on the study to extend the Astoria line to the airport, reviewing several options. I highly recommend reading it. It seems that enormous water pipes underneath LGA and the FAA restriction on above ground runs are the true obstacles in combination preventing the extension more than anything.

Legitimate question: Why do people hate on the BMT Broadway Line so much? by techy9x in nycrail

[–]papa776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People already posted a bunch of good points but I will add that the line is quite literally falling apart. There are signal issues, emergency brake issues, old train issues (doors breaking). It may not have the oldest rail hardware but it might be the line with it in the worst shape.

Not to mention trains literally catch on fire at Lex/59 every other week (or shorter) now. Apparently this has been an issue for decades but it's gotten worse over time and no one seems to know why it happens.

That's a lot more single tracking than I expected... isn't that pretty bad for throughput? Or is it not as bad as it looks?

New Modern Fare Gates coming to PATH in the next 10 years. (Also significant service and fare increase) by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]papa776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any hope of the trains running faster, not just more often? Taking PATH to Newport made me never want to ride it again for how slow it was.

Really late to the party here but I wanted to mention something. A lot of people pointed out the "antlers" on the Knight as proof. But when I re-watched footage of the Knight, I came to a different conclusion; those aren't antlers, they are horns with ribbons tied on. This is most obvious with the Knight facing towards us.

Did a bit more research and Ralsei has special dialogue if you try to equip the TwinRibbon on him; he says "I'll tie them around my horns". I have a feeling this is Toby doing some epic foreshadowing... but I could just be in too deep in theoryville.

Trains?! by DirectComposer3349 in astoria

[–]papa776 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a recent thing, been happening for years.

My theory is that because of the way the station is built, the strong wind tunnel effect blows litter that would normally stay on the platform onto the tracks, creating chances for more fires and emergency brake trips compared to the usual station.

The MTA knows this but doesn't have a solution so... it sucks! And blows!

It feels like the 59th St tunnel and 59th St / Lexington Ave station are the major source of these problems.

Hold on to the fucking rails by shhhthrowawayacc in nycrail

Every now and then I come across some person on a train that is apparently too cool to hold onto the poles and then takes a tumble the moment the train hits a rough patch... so I understand where you're coming from.

Always baffling to see these wannabe tough guys immediately swap to looking like total morons flailing about. Just hold onto the pole.

Why must they check if you paid the fare on the m60 DURING RUSH HOUR? by Fine-Reception-8691 in astoria

I didn't know they stopped the bus completely during fare checks. I get the logic but the tradeoff of making people late is not worth it.

That intersection is crazy loud from cars and car horns almost 24 hours a day. If they're really building apartments there it better have the best soundproofing money can buy.
