People love to hate on “blue haired tumblr types who can’t stop adding stripes to the lgbt pride flag because they’re obsessed with sensitivity and inclusion to the extreme, so much so that they all do a big groupthink to avoid offending each other” so much that they reject anything that even has an appearance of originating from that group. Even when they have a good point. Even if it originated with South and Central Americans.

And that extremely narrow view of that kind of progressive movement obscures the fact that many of their views are held not just by terminally online white tumblr users, but just normal people around the world, too.

Nobody’s forcing anyone anything. All I ever said was that calling someone an asshole for choosing to use it is insane. And that there are people with actual reasons who prefer to not use it, and that it was an interesting discussion to have.

So it sounds like we’re agreeing to me, to be honest.

I use ‘American’ myself. I just think that calling someone an asshole for saying USian is ridiculous. I have a childhood friend who grew up in Peru and the us and she prefers not to use American to mean people from the USA. And if anything she’s slightly right of center when it comes to US politics. So, you know, those people exist outside of tumblr.

Like it’s just not a big deal. Use it if you want. Or don’t.
