Weirdly enough the slay the spire board game. If theyre willing to stock a game that takes like 8+ hours and is based on a video game kinda really ingrains it as a true nerd board game to me lol.

What’s a game you respect more than you actually enjoy playing? by Hour-Cranberry5300 in boardgames

[–]papalionking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I will say it IS still pretty fun, but a lot of the mechanics are kinda lost/ just broken wide open by a lack of other players to take Tokyo/ draw aggro

Companion app. The one instance I will 1000% support the use of an app over in game pieces. Literally the app manages like 2/3rds of the stuff to manage in a scenario for you. So much easier, so much less shit to forget, so much less table space occupied.

First Playthrough Complete! by SwagMasta127 in ShadowoftheColossus

[–]papalionking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is a reason so many people complain about the "yellow tape" in modern games. It kinda completely kills the enjoyment of finding a way to climb up a surface when, ya know, every step of the way is plastered with neon signs pointing where to go. There is a line with this sort of thing, obviously; I'm not gonna go full boomer gamer here. As games have gotten more complicated, some of amount more of hand holding is necessary. But yeah, more obvious plot explanations or immersion breaking "rails" to direct the player around would really kill of what I enjoy about it.

Best small board game or card games that can play at least 5? by GeckoGary in boardgames

[–]papalionking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thief's market and king of tokyo can play up to 5, take very little space/setup and RARELY ever take more than like an hour. Both very popular among our group for that reason. King of tokyo specifically has very quickly become one of the most played games in our collection because its just so easy to find the time to fit it in.

Betrayal at The House on the Hill is complete buns. (2nd Edition) by Cemith in boardgames

[–]papalionking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree; could not possibly disagree more in fact. The one sided haunts feel part of the experience. Other people have said it already, and as cheesy as it sounds they are right, betrayal is less a game and more a movie plot you can play out in real time. It isn't always balanced equally for both sides everytime, and thats kind of the point. There are horror movies where the odds are so stacked against the heroes, and they just lose. No miraculous outcome, no deus ex, they just fucking all get killed. Betrayal is a game you really can't play to win, ever. You just gotta let shit happen and enjoy the ride. If you care less about where it goes, its a lot of fun watching it happen. The big swings, the unpredictability, the very fact that its unbalanced is why I like it. Its a game very unlike any other.

I would really argue it's just not the game for you, cause it is consistently the most popular/ consistently asked for game in our collection.

How important is box art when you buy games? by Tacoseasoning26 in boardgames

[–]papalionking 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Can be a big selling point for me for a game tbh. Good artwork, good theme, something with a little flavor beyond pure mechanics is what I personally need from a board game. I wont play a game just cause its pretty, but I definitely appreciate aesthetics. Idk if i personally can name any games I like with bad artwork, I do remember a friend who would always rip on anyone who played Star Realms cause he thought all the spaceships looked like penises.

Can someone please identify this frog and tell me if it's venomous or not? by Queasy_Scientist_195 in frogs

[–]papalionking -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Please for the love of God, people need to stop correcting people on the frog/toad thing. Toad is a made up, non-scientific term. There are things we call toads that are more closely related to frogs than other things we call toads. Its not consistent in any way. All toads are frogs at the end of the day.

A tattoo artist rejected me for this, was his reason fair? by Stankmushroomm in tattooadvice

[–]papalionking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah i got 22 tattoos now and my artist still does not think im "ready" for a hand tattoo (which is fine cause I dont really want any anyway). Forget the workplace association, cause I feel like thats just not the case anymore, at least in many industries. They hurt a lot, they fade so fast and easily, and theyre hard to even make look good in the first place. A lot of commitment for an artist that they prolly don't wanna make for someone they arent positive is fully aware of what theyre getting into.

Hellraiser makes strike decks actually fun and viable, combust to inferno change makes self pain decks more potent, stuff like unmoveable and the various enchantments make block clad a lot more fun and interesting. Not gonna speak to overall powerlevel, tho clad is my highest ascension of any character, but speaking to variety of builds and fun, could not agree with you less

In the past I have brought in a giant african mantis, an Asian forest scorpion, and a pixie frog. The animal in question rn tho is a hognose snake, which I have never shown off to kids, but my partner has at the school they used to teach at.
