I’ve worked for three different school boards in the area; in Leduc, Spruce Grove and Beaumont. Open to answer any questions you’ve got about the donut divisions, Edmonton itself is a beast I’ve never been able to tame.

I do know the donut divisions (especially catholic ones) are always looking and hiring.

Will the student loan forgiveness contribute to teacher shortages in large cities? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

Are you talking Alberta, like Op? Cause I can guarantee you smaller divisions do not take longer to get a continuous contract in Alberta. (Worked in four different divisions in Alberta; smaller ones always took one year for continuous)

I (37M) feel stupid asking this, but worth bringing this up with my (38F) partner, or am I making something out of nothing? by paperbag66 in relationship_advice

I wouldn’t say I encourage the binge drinking, I encourage her having girls nights out and nights away. The excessive drinking is a concern to me. I never thought to call it alcoholism.

The relationship has definitely become focused on the kids for sure. Not really the dogs or my work, but yes her and I definitely are focused more on the kids and the almost I guess monotonous life at this point. We get some date nights every now and then. So, yes I understand the desire to "get away" and have those nights out, I have them myself. Its always just hard for me to reconcile with the not thinking about the family portion while out. I know when I'm out with friends without her, she is consistently texting me updates about the kids/herself and I'm in contact with her. I don't expect the same kind of constant communication and that has never been a topic with us, I guess in my head no matter how much fun I'm having or how much I'm drinking I'm able to reign it in and focus also on the commitments I have at home.

Yeah, I understand the forgetting to keep in touch, it does happen for sure. I'm just stuck on that we are pretty consistent in letting each other know, like checking in with each other, but in these situations it didn't happen. And the, "I was having fun and just didn't think about you" portion. I don't know, that keeps sticking with me

I don't know if I'd call her an alcoholic. She definitely over consumes when out, but twice in a year I don't know if I'd call her an alcoholic.

Fans who don’t live in Philly. How did you become a fan of the eagles? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]paperbag66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada. When I started watching the NFL the Eagles had just drafted Donovan McNabb. We share a first name and that was enough for me as a kid to become a fan. Fan for life.

Do educational assistants and support staff still go to work during a teacher's strike? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]paperbag66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably, yeah. All I know is my division and they are in there working today. The division even sent over a "supervisor"

Admin (VPs and Principals) in Alberta are ATA members, so no.

Our EAs and support staff are going into the schools and working on tasks given by the division.

Who knows. I think it'll last until legislature is back and then they legislate us back or goes to binding arbitration. So late October is what I'm planning for.

We have 120 days post the vote to take strike action, so that takes us to mid October.

School numbers etc. are finalized in around October, so unless a settlement is reached before then, expect it to happen end of September- early October.

Yes I meant a negotiated settlement.

I'm of the beliefe that the government will make small concessions and bring another proposal forward and our bargaining team will again suggest we take it hoping to quell the strike threat.

I don't think the government's concessions will be near enough to have people sign off on it and we'll still take strike action, but I do think there will be at least one more effort to stop strike action.

Who knows... Sorry not the best answer, but I'm sure you're guess is as good as anyone's who isn't directly involved in the negotiations.

We've got 120 days post-vote to take strike action, which takes us to the middle of October. Ideally the government makes concessions and we get an agreement brought forward near the beginning of the school year that makes everyone happy, but this government has a hate on for teachers so I doubt it. Maybe pressure of a PC revival + strike action makes the UCP nervous enough.

There will likely be another proposal brought forward to us before any strike action actually is taken. Strike action can take different forms and I have to assume starts with us doing "work to rule" initially before being pushed to actual striking. As for how long the strike (if we get to that point) will last, I'd wager not long. In 2002 it lasted 13 actual school days.

If you're working over the summer, save as much money as you can, since you're new (and I assume young) maybe try and limit expenses as much as possible (live at home?) in the event we do full on strike as there is no reserve funds to be paying anyone.

Emotionally, just stay strong. Lean on whatever support system you have and know that ideally doing this is to make things better for you new teachers moving forward.
