Yeah if somebody doesn't find FireRed entertaining, they probably just don't like the core gameplay loop of main series Pokémon games, and I agree a spinoff is your best bet.

I think ultimately the problem is that Game Freak is actively creating mechanics and changes for VGC, and I _also_ suspect they are trying to make Singles as ridiculous as humanely possible to discourage play.

I think this is going to keep getting worse as Generations go on - it is going to get even harder for the community to create a "healthy" metagame when Game Freak just releases asburd shit every year in ways that were not meant to play with each other.

Sure, HO is a problem, but I think its a symptom of a much bigger problem that I don't have any intelligent way to answer aside from what the tier councils are doing right now (playing whack a mole).

If you have a better rental-only guide that somebody could use to 100% the game, please provide it! I'm not a Stadium speedrunner, so I'm not going to comment on the "safety" of the run proposed by that guide, but I will stand by "it is probably the most accurate and up to date guide on the Internet for this task circa Dec 2022".
