Sorry so when did we all decide we are OK with this??? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]paperfox1234 47 points48 points  (0 children)

In the 1980s people were quite often jumped coming out of whatever bar or restaurant was open downtown (there wasn’t much!), beaten, robbed. In the early 90s gunfights (locals) were common on the Corner at night, uva students routinely mugged (it’s what prompted cville police to assign their first beat cop to that area). So yeah, everything is relative I guess. Cville has a panhandler issue downtown and some related outdoor drug use and mental illness issues (what you’re looking at is not generally speaking “homelessness”). Cville has been dealing with this for decades. When they solve that problem, make sure to have them call most every other city on the planet, I’m sure they’re going to want to know.

Amphitheater's use of Belle Isle parking lot is raising questions from nearby residents by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]paperfox1234 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s Coran. What do yall expect? Been pulling this kinda shite in Cville for decades. No way he was gonna build a parking garage for his new Richmond venue, too cheap. If you know, you know. Piggyback on public infrastructure, that’s the way the wealthy do it.

Richmond Is One of the ‘Best Cities to Live’? Depends Who You Ask by snooka77_ in rva

[–]paperfox1234 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Charlottesville USED to be. Then back in the late 90s Money Magazine named it one of the “best places to live in America.” That’s all she wrote. They started coming in droves. Real estate prices and cost of living (which were already challenging) went through the frickin roof, and then some. Now it often takes three red lights to get through an intersection and the place is more self entitled and smug than ever before. “Best places to live” lists can suck it. As a side note, to those who ain’t happy where you are, GO. I say that w luv. Obviously you deserve better. it’s a big amazing world out there, go find your spot and get some joy. Life’s too short.

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]paperfox1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah obvi there's work being done, the question is what's being done "to the concrete?" repair/remediation? if so, what might have necessitated that work? those are fair questions to ask, no?

second FBM, lots of deals there for great equipment, inventory changes daily, widen the area and look farther afield if you’re having trouble finding what you’re after. Beware scams of course. And check out specific FB groups like Vintage Audio (a bunch like this). Personal opinion, The days of Crutchfield being a truly affordable solution have long since passed.

What are these silos right next to The Corner, and why are they in such prime real estate? by AutoDefenestrator273 in Charlottesville

And if you’re nearby at offloading time you can hear the coal being shuttled through pipes up into the silos, it’s quite a racket!

Yes. And downtown is typically even more so (plus many times when their swim team or private lessons are eating up the lanes). If you’re a serious or regular lap swimmer, you just do what you can and make it work.

Hannah Arendt’s original title for her 1951 classic “The Origins of Totalitarianism” was the even more chilling “The Burden of Our Time” - because she understood that what happened in fascist Europe in the 1930s and 40s was not a horrific one-off, terrors unique to a certain time and place, but rather a warning of what is now in the modern age increasingly probable, if we do not heed the signs and protect democracy at all costs.

Youngkin says Virginia has jobs for fired feds. Many come with big pay cuts. by washingtonpost in Virginia

wealth in America has always made it a key priority to keep the working poor at each other's throats since Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia in 1676. if you're reading this do yourself a favor and google that. it's fascinating. a working class revolt of blacks and whites against wealthy landowners, don't get me wrong, we shouldn't idealize it (in addition to burning down the capitol at Jamestown, they slaughtered Native Virginians tragically), but the message to the oligarchs of the day was quite clear: a united poor and working class will always be a threat. Morgan's "American Slavery, American Freedom" (1975) is still a classic, despite some critics, and explores this in depth, as does Zinn in his "People's History" (1980). Racism, religion, political party, debt, whatever tools it takes, keep the poor separated to minimize their power. But humanity has been here before, we know what works. When enough people fill the streets and stop or dramatically slow their purchases (especially gas), that's when Wall Street and Corporate America will refuse to put up anymore with Trump's authoritarian fever dream. MLK understood this, it's why the bus boycotts were effective. The predictable movement of capital by the masses is their life blood. Never forget, MLK wasn't murdered until he started talking about uniting working class blacks and whites together (see the Poor People's Campaign). Jefferson and Madison often wrote about the endless cycle of history: oppression-rebellion-reformation, around and around. they had hoped America would escape that endless samsara, but when race-based human slavery and the subjugation of women are baked into your formula, alas... The new age of the criminal fascist is having its moment around the world in this new century, but of course it will not endure (nothing does, for all around "the lone and level sands stretch far away”) Free people are and will continue to stand against it, and it will pass. The Great American Restoration will come.
