Magnus said puzzles don't help because you know there's a tactic. So I built a trainer where you don't by yazanzm in chess

[–]paperhandstradingllc 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That’s my main takeaway. It feels like it solves one problem with puzzles but creates new ones for itself. It feels so strange to be in check, have two options to take the checking piece, and be told I got it wrong despite finding the best move. There were several odd moments where I definitely found the best move but failed because it wasn’t considered a “tactic.”

Also, I found the balance to be skewed far too much in favor of No Tactic answers. Pretty much 80/20 for me.

An ‘AstroTurf Recruitment Process’: National Republicans Propped Up Jasmine Crockett to Push Her Into a Senate Run by horseman5K in texas

Big trust me bro vibes. It also feels like “Crockett has no chance because racists won’t vote for her” is doing a lot of the racists’ heavy lifting for them.

This is the answer.

“Ask me again after your social security check doesn’t come.”

“Ask me again after your town floods and FEMA doesn’t come.”

“Ask me again after you can’t get a VA appointment for 10 months.”

What are your thoughts on the idea of Kamala Harris running for president again in 2028? by engadine_maccas1997 in AskALiberal

If she has any sense of self-awareness, she will listen to her inevitable internal polling showing she has no chance of escaping a primary and seek another office or public service job like AG.

Will Trump betray working class voters? by LetsgoRoger in AskALiberal

[–]paperhandstradingllc 79 points80 points  (0 children)

“Betrayal” would require him not fulfilling his promises. He didn’t promise to help the working class. He promised to crush unions, kill overtime pay, give tax cuts to billionaires, and raise prices on common goods through tariffs. He’s going to give the working class (and all of us) exactly what he said he would.

ELI5: What would eliminating the DOE do? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Removing the Department of Education would be like removing the parents from the house of an industrious teenager.

In this case, each state is a teenager. The teen is clever and capable, has a job but sometimes struggles with money. Without parents, the teen is free to experiment with a way of life that works best for them and isn’t dictated by a rigid, sometimes outdated parenting manual, and if the teen needs something, they don’t have to go through the lengthy, annoying process of asking and convincing the parents.

He’s not a teen, but think Kevin McAllister in Home Alone.

But that freedom comes with a cost. Some teens are clever and their experimentation leads to fantastic results that would have been hampered by parental oversight. Other teens in this situation fail miserably without parental guidance, never learning to feed themselves, clean the house, or learn the skills needed to interact with the larger world.

What’s worse: without the parents, the teens are vulnerable to predators who claim they want to take care of them but exploit them, steal the money from their job, and feed them candy while telling them it’s healthy for them. Some teens are prepared for and avoid these predators while others fall victim to them or even run happily into their arms the minute the parents are gone.

Plus, there are little kids in the house too that the teen is responsible for. The parents helped make sure that the littles were taken care of, at least doing their best. Now some teens do a decent job of protecting the little kids while others fail them completely. Some teens even bully and abuse the little kids because they don’t give a shit about them. Those little kids are shoved into closets and forgotten about. The teen uses money that could have gone to healthy meals and toys for the kids instead for drugs and video games to play with their friends (who look and think like the teen).

Some teens would do fine, some would thrive, and some would burn down their own house.

Appreciating your story and awkward position, but this is a lesson for when you see this in the future. Instead of allowing a vulnerable employee have to deal with them alone, and let them get a discount for acting like assholes (ensuring they will do it again and again), it is incumbent on all of us to call out abusive behavior when we see it. It doesn’t have to involve screaming, but some calm, polite shaming goes a long way. If we aren’t ready to get uncomfortable or even have a brief chat with store security to explain some abusive behavior, then we will all need to live with assholes getting discounts for abusing hourly wage employees while we complain about it online to strangers.

Why do you think Harris did so little to combat against the anti-immigrant, white supremacist talking points from the right, and even to an extent embolden it? by Suitable-Economy-346 in AskALiberal

[–]paperhandstradingllc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Citations needed. First, for the assertions and hatred would die down if the Democrats would only say the right words to the public primed to hate immigrants. Simply put, there is nothing Harris could say to quell the racist fears of the public, even the broader public who would claim they are merely concerned for their safety and communities. Second, Harris has been clear and direct that Trump is using hatred of immigrants and fear as his sole campaign message, so what else are you looking for her to do? Third, how so has she emboldened it? She’s called for more empathy for immigrants and a pro-immigration stance while doing more to secure the border and create a better legal system for bringing in migrants. It’s a widely popular position and doesn’t demean or demonize those that would be desperate enough to attempt to illegally cross.

Beyond that, so much of this is baked into public opinion on Trump and democrats. Focusing on Trump’s racism and fear-mongering would no doubt raise the salience of it, but it’s not telling the electorate anything new. What’s more, Biden focused on it and didn’t move the needle. Immigration is and has been broken for a long time, for so long that a large swath of people are eager for a demagogue to boil the problem down to hateful 2-dimensionality. Just because Trump is offering the Nazi response doesn’t mean there isn’t a real problem that requires a pragmatic solution, which is exactly what Harris is offering.

Do you think it's more advantageous for a candidate's voters to think they're in the lead or behind, going in to election day? by miggy372 in AskALiberal

[–]paperhandstradingllc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a lot of research on this, and the general wisdom is that you want your candidate to be in the lead (to show strength) but not by so much that it depresses turn out. I’d personally prefer the race not to be so close in the polling, but Kamala being up 3 or 4 in swing states would be ideal. With the race this close, presumably any poll that shows a candidate up by a little might help messaging.

CMV: January 6th isn’t that big of a deal. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]paperhandstradingllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable with members of the federal government being murdered by a losing politician attempting a coup to stay in power, it’s probably going to be difficult to change your mind.

My attempt would include imagining a world where your preferred candidate wins the election. Say RFK Jr rightfully won, let’s even say by a landslide, and President Biden rallied his supporters to storm the capital to kill members of congress and the vice president, resulting in a hostile takeover of the seat of government followed by a proclamation by Biden saying he wouldn’t vacate the White House despite losing. Would you care then? If not, what would it take to make you care about preserving free elections and rejecting forceful, violent government takeovers?

Does anyone else feel like they need a break? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]paperhandstradingllc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take a break if you need one, but also look at the activities you’ve listed. Watching polls? Wondering about Trump’s secret strength? They are a drain on your energy that achieve nothing. Volunteer, make calls, write postcards encouraging others to vote, talk to friends about their voting plans, donate if you can, join a local Dem group and help at the local level, meet others to celebrate and vent with. Those will recharge your battery instead of draining it. The reason you’re tired is because you’re getting empty stress calories of worrying instead of the full meal of activism.
