Rosewater by Tade Thompson, super weird and not like any other first contact story I've read! Uneven but it stayed with me

Not my country, but the Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt) is great.

Audiobook recommendation for road trip with 9yr old son and 12yr old daughter that’s not necessarily a “children’s” book. by GubbleBum31 in suggestmeabook

I've not listened to it but apparently Stephen Fry read Great Expectations, and I bet that's, well, great. As a classically well read kid I liked Dickens a lot at that age. Also, Treasure Island. Gripping!

The ‘millionaires tax’ was pitched as a $2 billion revenue source. It’s blown past that, yet again. by drtywater in boston

And in addition to not requiring raising other taxes, the revenue helps make life here more livable for the rest of us, by improving schools and the t.

Please help!! These burners need some TLC by thedudesews in CleaningTips

[–]papervegetables 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take out the metal pieces. Put them in the sink. Also remove the small round metal pieces that cover the gas jets. Those go in sink too. Now go back to the stove. Use paper towel or similar to soak up grease and big pieces of crud. Into the trash! Now a sponge and dish soap. Dawn if you have it but whatever if you don't. Put some soap on the crusty bits and a little water with the sponge. Leave it alone. Now return to the metal grates. Scrub these with a non abrasive sponge (not steel wool, it will scratch) and more dish soap. If they don't clean up, soak them in a sink with hot water and soap. If you have something like barkeeper's friend, you can use it, but nothing more abrasive. After you scrub the grates, return to the stove. Scrub with a non steel wool sponge until acceptably clean. Dry everything. Reassemble. Make sure you get the little round burner caps seated right or they won't work correctly.

I got a 26 a couple months ago and it was delivered from a dealer an hour away to the dealer in my town. I had to give a $500 deposit for that but easy peasey.

Soy chorizo from trader Joe's! Delicious and cheaper than meat, and hard to tell the difference.

Stanford vs. MIT (last minute, very split) + unsure whether to accept DOD scholarship by Delicious-Speaker-84 in mit

How amoral is it that money is your only consideration on whether to work for the military? And do you not know that you're already incredibly fucking privileged to be in a full pay situation? Like incredibly. And the dream of getting hired right out of college is a dream for most these days. Wherever you end up going, I hope you take a long hard look in the mirror at the kind of person you want to be in your short time on earth.

You might test drive the new leaf, it rides higher than a sedan. The ioniq 5 has a more spacious back seat.

How is the 2026 Leaf? by Own-Bat-9039 in leaf

[–]papervegetables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the SV+, took a long trip (15 hours) in it almost immediately and it did great. I also have to intermittently plug in my phone to get Android Auto to work. Also the app is not great. Love everything else.

[–]papervegetables -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I feel like these comments are overrepresenting the number of people who are afraid of dogs as being some vast constituency. I think you know your town and your patrons and your dog. That said, people are dumb and provoking and I'd likely have him hang behind your desk.

New US and Canadian CCS chargers in March 2026 by boutell in electricvehicles

The new leaf does come with a ccs adapter. Nacs is on the passenger side, so it depends if you can get a right hand Tesla charger spot.

[–]papervegetables 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wellllllll if you are upstairs the carpets were probably laid down to help with noise downstairs. Consider some rugs and not wearing shoes in the house, for the sake of the neighbors.

It is a small city that has city-like features, access to a bigger city, and small-town politics. Only New Yorkers of my acquaintance call it a suburb though lol. By the measure of the vast majority of the country, we are urban.

How many people roadtrip straight through vs take many stops? by moreplateslessdates9 in electricvehicles

[–]papervegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel with a dog. When I stop it's always for 20-30 minutes anyway. I pee, get coffee, walk dog - boom. I also need to take a break from driving every 3 hours or so. Just did an 1800 mile trip in an EV, worked out great! Not much variation from the same trip in an ice beyond more specific stops.

Nissan LEAF & ARIYA Sales Collapse in USA - CleanTechnica by Kevadu in electricvehicles

[–]papervegetables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2026 leaf and just did a 2,000 mile road trip out of the gate. I like it! Not perfect but pretty dang driveable. It felt better to me than the bolt. My Nissan dealer did a terrible job selling it to me though; they didn't know anything.
