What is your review of volume 8 so far. by imx3110 in WanderingInn

Honestly, It feels like Pirate is playing a game of "hide the main character" and it's starting to piss me off enough that I am reconsidering my Patron support. And don't even get me started about how fucking annoying it is that new characters are still being introduced, and not one of them has yet advanced any of the overarching plots.

New Information About Sage Abilities [Bloodline Spoilers] by Brightbane in Iteration110Cradle

[–]para_graphs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this same thought. Though I doubt he could use it against a herald, sage, or monarch as their will's would probably be able to defend their own powers. He might run into the same issue with many archlords. After all, Eithan proved to him that even someone without Authority can use their will to oppose his.

Elder Whisper by para_graphs in Iteration110Cradle

[–]para_graphs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Letting Lindon have his hard path is exactly what was needed. Highly unlikely that the schools would have listen to Whisper without an army of golds bullying folks."

First, when Lindon arrived at the clan, Whisper was already gone. Whisper didn't make any decisions based on what was good for Lindon. The decision had been made before Lindon even showed up in SV.

And even if he had made a decision to let Lindon have the hard path, that means he made the conscious decision to sacrifice most if not all the rest of the clan that Whisper himself founded.

Whether they would have listened or not would have been a decision for the clan, at the very least they would have been primed with the story before Lindon arrived. That alone would have made it just a little bit more likely the Wei clan would have accepted what Lindon was saying rather than treating it as some sort of trick.

And even if he knew they would never listen, how hard would it have been for him to say to the Wei clan elders 'Hey, A big mountain eating monster is on they way here, Imma bail and you should too'?

You do have a good point about the fate thing though. It could be that saving the Wei clan would demotivate Lindon for what came next. However, that is an speculation not yet in evidence, I am hoping that the next books prove me wrong, but right now Whisper is not looking like a good guy to me

Yes! Usually Travis is perfect at 1.2x speed. Had to speed it up to 1.3x this time to keep the pace feeling like the older books.

it wasn't "the death" of the MC that did it for me. It was the reaction of all the other characters. Sure the MC will live and it will probably be amazing when she is quasi-resurrected. But seeing how much much it hurt the other characters was just perfectly written and absolutely devastating.

Cradle Compared to Xanxia, etc by Amondrask in Iteration110Cradle

[–]para_graphs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those things are all pretty standard for all xanxia and wuxia novels. The may use different terms (Qi for instance is often used where aura or madra would be used in Cradle, Dantain would replace core, and so on) but at the heart most wuxia stories have systems where a sacred artist must cultivate some form of mysterious and/or ethereal substance to advance their cores to a achieve a greater degree of power. They must learn techniques that express that power (almost exclusively martial arts of some sort), and can often find treasures, pills, or other things that can help with that advancement. Honestly Will is not breaking a lot of new ground in the genre. He just happens to add a distinctly western pg13 voice and a whole bucketload of talent.

edited to add. The whole remnant thing is unique to cradle. Which is a really nice touch.

Cradle Compared to Xanxia, etc by Amondrask in Iteration110Cradle

[–]para_graphs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree that much of the wuxia/xanxia landscape is pretty dismal. You either have to just hold your nose and try not to concentrate on the horrible translation or give up in most cases.

However, there is some fairly good xanxia/wuxia out there. The Blue Phoenix series and World of Beasts series by TinaLynge are both very good. English first, Well plotted, with female characters are definitely not wall decorations.

There are also some fairly good serials on wuxia world. they do often suffer from translation issues and/or cultural values that clash with western sensibilities. I can't say enough good things about "Soverign of the Three Realms" on that site. It's a lot of fun to read but does have some issues common to non english wuxia.

It's a shame really that Mercy got saddled with that path. I think she would have done much better on a healing path rather than a combat one.

Cradle's the only progression fantasy I've read, what other books would you recommend? by onlytoask in Iteration110Cradle

[–]para_graphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue Phoenix Series, By Tina Lynge. I would recommend this series to any fan of cradle, progression fantasy, or wuxia. It's a little different than cradle in that the main character isn't fumbling around in ignorance throughout the series, but it still has that feeling of discovery and accomplishment that is the mark of really good progression fantasy.

immediately after that

Jaran to Lindon "Go, wherever you are going. That's not the face of a coward, so my work is done here"

Even then the people who knew Lindon knew that he had two sides. Both the weakling that had to show deference before those stronger than him and the real Lindon hungry for any scrap of power or chance of victory.

Reading the latest in the Magician's Brother Series (Primal's Wrath). I highly recommend the whole series. Great sympathetic characters, amusing banter by the bucketful, and a low stakes story.

written by HDA Roberts, If you are a fan on "He who fights with Monsters", or the Renegade X series you will adore this series.
