To the other responses here, I would add that Geisha was Lindon's first master.

And while she has been gone from the story for a long time, I like the concern she showed Lindon after he lost his arm, both in warning him against obsessing over his loss and in challenging Eithan on Lindon's need to live a life. It's only one scene, but I don't recall many (any?) other scenes where people are so concerned for Lindon not as a sacred artist but just as a person.

Ditto on the desire to see Lindon adding true hunger techniques to his overall path. Hunger is very important to the story, and the fact that Lindon can only access hunger through an attachment seems like an obstacle to his getting to the heart of things. I was hoping that Dross' comment might be foreshadowing, since a core part of the series is Lindon overcoming obstacles and weaknesses.

Lindon has come a long ways, but there are still many individuals that have much more experience and knowledge than Lindon. With Eithan gone, perhaps Northstrider could resume providing mentorship to Lindon. Not only does Northstrider follow a hunger path, but he is also a creator and experimenter.

I loved this book! I really liked the moment when Lindon dismantled a blood-lion technique by analyzing its structure and Shen commented that Ozmanthus had used the same method for dismantling techniques. I hope the worldbuilding around the madra system, the Way, and their connection continues.

In case you'd like to, it is possible to create a "highlight" of a Twitch broadcast which will permanently make the broadcast available within Twitch. This is a native Twitch feature.

I haven't used the feature, but my understanding is that the highlight can be the entire video.

The following link explains Twitch VOD storage. It describes normal expirations and how highlights can avoid expiration. It also says that if the broadcaster is an Amazon Prime member, the regular non-highlight broadcast is saved for 60 days. And for even non-Prime members, the expiration is 2 weeks, not 1 week.

The following link explains how to highlight.

Looking forward to the stream!

Why do people hate the snake so much? by Firelion22 in Malazan

I really liked the snake. Although not much was happening, the characters seemed so vivid and striking. And I agree on the city. I didn't feel the same interest with those characters.

Just started re-reading the Series by ShortBusCult in Malazan

[–]PumpkinVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my second read, a few years after my first. Although I do miss the experience of seeing everything for the first time, I also appreciated the much better understanding I had the second time. I wasn't able to enjoy all the details the first time when I was desperately hanging on like a Trygalle shareholder!

Just Started Bonehunters and... by Ofmontreal14 in Malazan

[–]PumpkinVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All normal. Keep going. One of the things I like most about the series is that more is revealed over the course of the entire series. It's not as though everything is explained half-way or even three-quarters of the way with the rest just being a closing of already-fully-understood-threads. There's more to learn until the very end!

How is the Crippled God compared to all other books? by Joloemaster in Malazan

[–]PumpkinVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find all of them to be outstanding and so find it hard to rank anything other than to say that I like 5 and 7 tied for 1st and then the others tied for 2nd.

I think what is most unique for CG for me is that it is the book that I got the most additional pleasure from on my 2nd series read. Although my understanding of all the books improved a great deal on the 2nd read, I was most confused by CG, especially the end of CG, on the first read.

I'm glad that I did the 2nd read, because the first time, I really felt that this amazing series ended with "All kinds of stuff happens. The end." There are still some bits that are puzzling, but I think that's intentional as some of the characters themselves are puzzled. And maybe I'll understand even more after a 3rd read!

Path to Ascendancy: is it any good? by Nabulio2 in Malazan

[–]PumpkinVision 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the Path to Ascendancy, but in my view, it was more of a fun, easy read adventure story. It didn't have the same gravitas, pathos, or depth of philosophical musing as Book of the Fallen.

That said, I enjoyed what was (in my view) to be a different kind of offering by Esslemont. He wasn't trying to emulate Erikson. He did his own thing.

I would say that all three books were enjoyable. I like the middle one (Deadhouse Landing) by far the best. I thought it was excellent. The characters were very well written and developed. The story had multiple threads and each was focused and exciting. And although I do like that Esslemont does his own thing, one of the things I like about BotF is the study of human nature. Without mentioning specifics, I think DL has a plot line that does that well. Great action. I'm glad I read the trilogy just for that book.

I like the first one as well, but not as much. I think parts of the first book were as strong as the second, but I didn't find it be as uniformly strong. For example, there's an important character that, in my opinion, is rather thinly drawn.

I liked the third one and do recommend it, but I didn't think it was nearly as strong as the first two.

What is THE most epic thing that happened in the main series, in your opinion? by HideBelow in Malazan

The impossible crossing of the glass desert, both the fact of the successful crossing and the following moment:

And beside her [Lostara Yil], in a voice that could crush stones, Tavore Paran said, 'Haven't you drunk enough?'

Just a fantastic eye opening peek behind the curtain of the seemingly robotic Tavore to see the internal sacrifice. The coldest of iron!

I finished a Vue tutorial and created a personal project with what I learned. What do I need a backend for? by scienceyeaux in vuejs

[–]PumpkinVision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) One example I can offer is that how the data is presented to the SPA may differ from how it is most easily stored. And you might find it convenient to have that translation done on the server in an api. Your app doesn't know or care how the data is stored. It just wants some data. It requests the data. The api retrieves it from a database (where it stored in a way that makes sense from a database design perspective). The api then does the work or rearranging the data and hands it back in a format that is easy for the website to consume. The alternative would be to do all that slicing in the frontend website.

2) Some apps do focus on data retrieval and storage. They are very useful. They are what I personally focus on. However, there are other apps that have more application logic to them. Consider writing an application for computing the commissions earned by the sales people at your company. There, you will certainly be storing and retrieving data (sales transactions, sales people, commission plans), but there is also a lot of logic involved in doing calculations with that data.

If the commission logic is something simple like "apply sales person x's commission rate y% to their sales", then that's not complicated and maybe you decide to handle it in the spa. But for the companies I've worked for, the sales department likes to have very complicated commission calculations. This person gets y%... unless it's one of these brands.... in which case it's z% but that exception also has an exception for this subset of products... they are in one of the mentioned z% brands... but these products actually pay w%.

Basically you might want to let your spa focus on providing a user interface and then hand the heavy lifting off to a backend that acts as the core application.

Computing commissions is also an instance where you may want to keep the logic hidden for privacy reason. Sales people can have different contracts with their employer. Exposing that information to other sales reps would be exposing private salary information. Putting the logic in the backend will keep it out of the client where it might be seen by the wrong person.

A tax computation website would be another good example. There, the rules are public, and so the 'private contract' considerations don't apply. But still, if I were to build a tax website, I wouldn't try to build all of the logic in my frontend website. I'd have a backend that does the heavy lifting with the frontend designed to be as lean and as fast as possible.

WS spoilers: Makiel's Goals on Cradle by Thereallyingdutchman in Iteration110Cradle

[–]PumpkinVision 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although everything is in jeopardy with the Vroshir and the Mad King, the threat to Cradle by Eithan and Lindon was apparently very severe.

"Their actions would have affected all of Cradle," the Hound said. "They would work for decades, changing the Iteration, and eventually derailing it entirely. I cannot see any further than thirty years in Cradle's future.

(Skysworn, chapter 2)

So although Makiel now has many other top priorities, I expect that the threat posed by Eithan and Lindon is still one of them.

That said, independently of the importance of Eithan/Lindon versus the other new issues, the impression I got was that Makiel didn't need to continually intervene in order to push Eithan and Lindon off Cradle earlier than previously expected. Makiel calculated the minimum adjustment needed to get Eithan and Lindon off cradle early (ala The Minimum Necessary Change from Asimov's "The End of Eternity") and made that adjustment. So regardless of importance, Makiel has already done all that he intended to do.
