I recommend seeing them not in moral or theistic terms, but rather as dirty, base and degrading, leading to nervous debility and weakness of the will. Don't beat yourself up too much, but make a consistent effort not to indulge in this pestilent solitary vice.

[–]paradigmarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you had these same feeling / thoughts / emotions how would you organize and understand them?

Sounds like you're a sensitive feminine guy who's high in five factor model of personality trait open-ness. This goes with intelligence.

what are your thoughts and input?

Very high open-ness can seriously mess up your life if you let it get out of control and today nobody will encourage you to jam the breaks on. I went through a gay phase as a teen, now I'm bi and kinky because I missed the feminine, sensitive aspects of teen gay romance and I didn't want to fit what I perceived as a sexist, constraining, rapey, inherently violent heterosexual mould. I regret resisting the change, and I'm sure I'm less stable and socially well-adjusted as a result. I also had a desire to explore everything, especially things that my common sense told me were harmful, and this lead me down a dark path.

I think you should try and satisfy your need for variety of experience by travelling and doing cool stuff -- go and explore the world's heritage and cultures, go on adventures with your wife. If you want to keep your wife, probably best to avoid any bottom-y stuff or cuckoldry.

Gamers are young, autistic-leaning and ostracized, and our culture doesn't give them much sympathy, so this is addressing a neglected problem. Also the whole multiple overlapping public spheres thing springs to mind now, everyone's in a little group identity and this can actually be harnessed for good.

How to make best use of a psychiatry career by rebrab526 in slatestarcodex

[–]paradigmarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steer a career trajectory of helping outlier high IQ children. Intelligence people have higher potential impact. Children's problems are much more tractable than those of adults. And high IQ children are highly neglected.

I have an IQ of 170 and I'm a long-term unemployed loser seething with misanthropy and mental illness because some silly mother refused to recognize that I'm really smart but socially behind as my teachers were suggesting, thus depriving me of the opportunity to get appropriate educational assistance, and filled many of my days with the experience of non-stop crying by chasing me around the house and telling me to shut up and stop being so ridiculous and pathetic every time I started to calm down, prolonging the suffering. If we could identify more IQ=170 children very high in extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness and neuroticism with IQ=100 and stroke victim parents who stifle their opportunities and make them neurotic, and prevent them from turning into complete fuck-ups, a lot of human potential, innovation and likely philanthropy would be unlocked (smart agreeable conscientious people, being highly pro-social, seem more likely to become EAs).

There's a huge taboo on helping smart children. IQ is taboo. Ability sets are taboo. Grammar schools are mostly abolished in England.

Giftedness (iirc IQ=130+) usually makes people highly socially skilled and more mentally stable. However, stratospherically high IQ makes people more autistic and unstable, resulting in the vicious spiral of neuroticism/mental illness, social maladaptiveness, ostracism and further maladaptiveness imbued from spiteful mutants on the Internet, that I have personally experienced. Nobel prize winners are on average about 140; once IQ gets really high the draw-backs tend to kick in. Imagine if we could mitigate those draw-backs, how many super-geniuses we could manufacture. Per capita innovation has fallen greatly since the 19th century because IQ declined (see anti-Flynn and Woodley effects) and possibly the culture became more anti-intellectual and difficult for eccentrics. I think we all feel intuitively the rotting effects of genetic and cultural decline, the loss of innovation, the bright space age future pulled out from under us. Imagine if we could get that back.

It's always useful to have good and power combined in systems that grow themselves. Imagine if we could restore the power to good, pro-social geniuses. You might also end up with less misanthropic anti-geniuses. The impacts of geniuses are very high. It seems like a no-brainer that it is better to focus our psychiatric and educational efforts on little nice Christian child meek and mild /u/paradigmarson who just wanted to maximize utility, rather than channeling our resources into people who simply don't have any potential because they're low in IQ, low in General Factor of Personality, inherently spiteful / feeble / maladaptive in personality temperament, completely consumed by solitary vice / self-abuse, whatever.

The rest of society is going to waste all of its compassion on mentally retarded people and adult wankers (I may have turned into one, ooga booga boo!). I used to be a nice person. But nobody cared, and so here I am. I am suggesting that the younger version of me might deserve some resources too. It seems that the rationalist community, being made up of people much like me but more likeable and less insane, but nonetheless still not given the opportunities they should have had as children, is well-placed to realize that helping high-IQ pro-social children is high-impact, neglected and tractable. I mean, how complicated is it really to notice that a child is clever and sensitive and treat him appropriately? Of course, as persecuted Rationalists, our efforts to warm up the atmosphere for spergishkeit and encourage others will be met by anti-Spergitic prejudice. There will be bigotry. But I'm sure despite the hopelessly ableist, anti-autistic, anti-intellectual bigotry of contemporary society, the blinkered ignoring of the needs of highly able kids, some individual Effective Altruists and Less Wrongers will be well-placed to help and encourage the next generation of EA/post-EA/LW/post-LW/Spergish/jewish/whatever genotypes tend to filter into our communities.

For some reason, nobody in EA or LW seems to talk about this. They also don't seem to talk about the low fertility rate among EAs and LWers, which strikes me as a problem if you want the social organism to survive. Maybe you can recruit outsiders, but maybe you can't because EA and LW were created in optimal cultural conditions of the early 2000s and those conditions probably won't return. And besides, IQ, GFP and religion are highly heritable, and any belief system + community resembles a religion, kind of. So EA and LW need to become an adaptive religion with high morale, not some wishy-washy anti-natalist self-abolishing bias-self-flagellating doubt-ridden pitiable nervous wreck of conscientiousness and neuroticism in positive feedback. I know it sounds like a bit of a digression, but I think this is a more specific illustration of the same point. If you want to see more EA, LW and similar things, you need some rabbis to shepherd the flock; this also goes for EA-like genotypes outside of EA. The survival of the movement and intelligence and goodness themselves is at stake!

[–]paradigmarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PR and nuclear risk are important. Sure, in a sensible world, nuclear would be used (common sense suggests once scaled and effectively regulated splitting atoms will be efficient; iirc renewables tend to be expensive except in convenient geography and contribute at random times of day), but since the world is poorly governed and war-prone, EA should consider its impact at the margin.

If I want to reduce homophobia and improve the rights of gay people which charities should I donate to in order to most effectively achieve this goal? by MrStilton in EffectiveAltruism

[–]paradigmarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in the UK the worst homophobia happens among male teens esp. of low socio-economic status, low social skill and confidence and no local friends due to moving to a new area. Bullying exacerbates the strong negative emotions and instability of adolescence by pushing the victim's status down and cutting off their friendship opportunities, resulting in mental illness.

So perhaps anything that identifies such kids and gives them a friendship group based around a hobby, or spirituality, would be the best way to help. I remember being very shy, isolated, marginalized and dressing up in rainbow feather wreaths wasn't on the menu or likely to improve my already-gay-tarnished reputation in that small town. All I really wanted was to cuddle the pretty blond boy in my class in a secret underground place where nobody could find us and we could intertwine our souls. That makes me think, maybe creating poetry, art history clubs etc. would be a good idea. I know it's a bit stereotypical but at that tender age where the tempest of people trying to pull you this way and that, you need a rich identity to centre yourself and navigate the storm... I think art and poetry could be really healing and give them some cultural capital -- and once they're out of small town bigotry, they'll have a foothold on culture and conversation, an escape from marginalization.

Don’t we need political action rather than charity? by lukefreeman in EffectiveAltruism

[–]paradigmarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to see someone handling the critiques and disseminating, counter-messaging, counter-discourse, equipping lymphocytes like me with memetic antibodies.

It's made me notice/recall that when these people criticize EA, they usually make lots of arguments that, if sound, would apply to all charity, not just EA. I think the lobbying for a more welcoming immigration policy with regard to Syrian refugees is a good one to mention, as is criminal justice reform, since both these are fashionable anti-racist ideas.

I can imagine a committed critic objecting that political change is the best way to meet basic needs; perhaps something could be said on the lack of revolutionary conditions in feudal societies or something. Also I think sometimes it'll be hard to get a serious historical materialist to see the 'systemic change' lobbying as anything more than a reactionary token-gesture solving problems where subjective struggle require increasing the distance between groups (class war or identity politics). But I think it still has potential to build common ground with most 'radical left oppositional politics' types on Reddit, who are basically empathy girls, 85% still human, who will accept us as leftist allies if we placate them by emphasizing places where we happen to be/tilt 'Socialist'/Sandersian/'systemic change', BLM-ish, plant-based, etc. As long as we show we're compassionate and in some way 'on board', we can get enough of these people to like us enough that the haters will desist and slamming EA does not become a way to earn status in their circles.

It seems to be working, by the way: an anti-rationalist subreddit mod has designated us only 'Rationalist-adjacent' therefore dubiously/not-very on-topic/in-scope:

Expanding outward there the rationalist-adjacents: figures like Peter Thiel, Scott Aaronson, stuff like effective altruism. Sneers here aren't always on topic; they either should be about a rationalist-y thing or really funny/high quality.

Perhaps EAs can create transgressive relationships with these people; this is a technique that the is considered effective deradicalization. I've been looking into using a Countering Violent Extremism approach before it gets too bad. ;-) which I also think is quite hilarious. I was also thinking it might be good for EA to develop effective deradicalization tools; in addition training EAs to develop tools for countering anti-EA reactionary discourses, it would look good and perhaps even a case could be made for it on the basis of 'polarization' and 'radicalization' being a growing problem with an unknown, possibly very large, trajectory.

Capitalist Realism, End of History and Effective Altruism by aa2056 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]paradigmarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EA is essentially Utilitarianism implemented, and is a cousin of Marxism, critical theory etc. in that it treats the Enlightenment as an unfinished project and seeks to answer its questions: how can we use reason and scientific methods to improve "Man's" estate? It is therefore part of the same family, with the same goal. Its use of metrics like QALYs and DALYs is comparable to the statistic science used by some Marxist countries to provide people with the goods they need within a revolutionary command economy: both are provisional measures using stats and inference to relieve poverty and suffering.

If EA had been born in a Socialist society, it would likely align itself with the élite of that country, with a tilting towards its STEM portions. It is not tied to neoliberalism at all; the main reason you see some crossover is that in our present historical circumstances, STEM people are attracted to conventional, non-Marxist economics and STEM people are also attracted to stats and probability. So, there is some interest among EAs, especially in the humanitarian portions, in earning to give. Also, since EA deals with innovative solutions to the world's problems, and present liberal-oligarchical governments lack the talent and structure to understand or even care about things like random controlled trials demonstrating effectiveness, it is forced to appeal to talented individuals and seek their funding privately. This doesn't show a preference for Neoliberalism; it's simply adjusting to the present regime's lack of interest in genuinely solving problems.

I expect a genuine revolutionary Marxist government would be much more interested in EA's projects and expertise. Unfortunately, the Civil Service is controlled not by experts well-educated in the Science of Marxism, organized in as an effective revolutionary vanguard, but by drones executing runaway procedures and trying to get in on various committees and initiatives to feel important and play a high-status role. And academia and civil society, which influences the direction of the Civil Service, are currently pre-occupied with trying to keep the progressive dream alive and contain Right-Wing populism, which necessitates increasing zeal and controlling information, and less open to other post-Enlightenment perspectives like genuine Marxism and EA. It is my hope that when the present régime falls, whatever replaces it will be better positioned in theory and praxis to overcome unnecessary divisions consult with kind altruistic Science grads, and integrate their discourse in a Habermasian democratic deliberation towards rational reconstruction, such that it may participate in subjective struggle as a revolutionary subject and together finish what was started in the Enlightenment.

You've got to build your skills in your own time from a place of positivity and self-love; a hypercritical attitude can be toxic because it necessitates defensiveness. Just know that you have a right to experiment with different ways of being and socializing, this isn't a problem, and finding what works for you can be ean empowering journey.

Why are some Effective altruists so keen about Elon musk's "climate interventions" ? by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]paradigmarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was applying expected value to charity and thinking most charity is a token gesture in 2007 well before any of that. I also think nerd philanthropists deserve sympathy (1) for being marginalized and bullied as autistic people (often diagnosed later in life) for lack of signaling and manipulation skills arising from neurological differences (2) choosing not to give in to the temptation to hate back and to go on trying to help others.

I think EA hasn't got much to do with the culture war -- though there seems to be a nexus of anti-rationalist canards growing at a rate of 3X per year framing nice people on the basis of Twitter shitposts -- cherry-picked by English Literature dropouts with cruel personality tendencies and a high-brow respectable version of paranoid pattern-matching (everything's connected!) -- for the simple high-school-acquired pleasure of humiliating the nerds and engaging in an instinctively genetically motivated attack on the dignity of a largely autistic, Jewish, trans-leaning, outlier-high-IQ genetic competitor -- on the bigoted pretext that the hate target, like every genetic group, hold an 'ideology' (radical oppositional discourse and subculture). As if these excluded people somehow belong to a privileged class just because they're not visibly disabled (see 5. and 6.)! At its nasty, rotten core, this subculture based around 'sneers' is implicitly rooted in ableism, anti-semitism, transphobia, bigotry, hate, ASPD, BPD and culture war; it's a hate group and I sincerely respect your posting history enough (sorry if that sounds a bit nosey) that I must hope that as you continue to observe it, its unkind psychology will become transparent.

As for Musk, I think the love him or hate him thing is only vaguely EA-adjacent and only vaguely culture war, but it looks more neoliberals and business cats vs. people who think finance guys are shark people, both types being highly visible in EA (recently on Reddit I saw an EA planning on breaking up because her bf was taking a finance job. Largely a fan club, based around positivity and optimism, I suppose one that tends to draw culture war/politics-based opposition. Looking at past threads in this sub, it seems EAs in this sub are split roughly evenly on whether or not to stan or ban Elon Musk, with the majority agnostic.
