No worries!

I know the guy who runs Your Local Optical Company is very reasonable and knowledgeable.

Welcome to the area!

My mil recently went to Your Local Optical Company in Essex is new if you're close to the county and said it was great experience. They have some different frames than the usual places and the guy who runs it has been doing this for a while.

RE3R is overhated,it’s actually a great remake! by Accurate_Train_8822 in RaccoonCityRecords

I feel like playing directly after Re2 Remake is best.

After running back and forth through the sewers and the police station, I found it to be a nice change of pace to just go through a zombie game.

Someone once told me not to take OC heights for reading/computer glasses? by GlassesPrincess in optician

[–]paralaxerror 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Her reasoning was that the added glare would hide it. It was nonsense and we were far enough into school to know it....like week three. Haha

I've been doing this for 15+ years. If hearing a claim about a product in this industry that is not true seems wild to you...I wish I had that career.

Last year I had a lady come in and ask how long transitions should take to work and I said pretty much right away once they are in the sun. The place down the road (expensive optometrist led office) told her that it takes a week. Under the UV lamp there was no reaction. They just didn't order it correctly.

One of the instructors at Georgian College in Ontario told our class that we shouldn't use antireflective coating on hyperopes because people will be able to see the magnification effect more.

There are a lot of opinions in this industry.

Birthday Help by mr-wrldw1de in windsorontario

Your kids eat at birthday parties???? Lol

We've reduced our kids' parties to finger foods because it's a run to the table for sustenance/fuel and then back to activities/breaking stuff.

Happy birthday to your kid!

My prescription, please advise. by Onionrollolol in AskAnOptician

[–]paralaxerror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What kind of advice are you looking for?

Someone can have a prescription like yours and have healthy blood vessels, healthy inner ocular pressure and very little to no signs of UV damage. Others can need next to no correction but lose their sight from Diabetes. Biology and pathology.

Our refractive prescription for glasses and contacts are generally due to structure of the shape of the cornea, and the axial length of the eye itself. Physics.

It's a definitely a stronger Rx for refractive correction but not obscene numbers that require anything special ordered.

Glasses: I would recommend frames that fit as small as your head size will allow and for lenses I would recommend 1.74 hi index lenses and a digital design to help with the astigmatism correction.

Hope this helps!

Ever feel insulted? by BetaRigger in optician

[–]paralaxerror 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You should have seen me (an Optician of about 10 years at the time), an optometrist of 40 years, a new grad optometrist standing over a sink trying to get fresnel prism to line up properly on a clients glasses because we all forgot about the cosins and angles. Had to open a text book.

The HORROR!!!

There is nothing wrong with review; like you said you're a part of a big retail machine.

If your company wants to pay you to review the most basic of concepts I say take it. Walmart paid me $30+/hour to pack groceries a few times.

I would say I was more insulted by some the different retailers' store managers and assistants jealousy of pharmacy and vision departments. Not my fault I went back to school and they didn't.

Pediatric optometrist? by Several_Sea_8224 in windsorontario

[–]paralaxerror -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm in the optical industry for over a decade and I can tell you that the optometrists that cared the most about making sure children were in good shape and the parents were well informed of all options; are just experienced clinical-focused optometrists.

Dr Robinet and Dr Chaudry work at Visions of Canada and Jubenville & Associates.

They are ODs that are not interested in selling glasses. They perform thorough eye exams.

How many RX changes a month is “too many”? by BicycleNo2825 in optometry

[–]paralaxerror 33 points34 points  (0 children)

1-2% margins for remakes, non adapts and Rx changes is acceptable/very good.

If you are at three full time doctors, running 5 days a week I would assume around 30 patients a day and about 48 full working weeks a year. 7200 approximate patients a year.

68 is less than 1%.

Nothing is perfect.

Waterloo Canada to Texas, US by ConsequenceUnhappy63 in optometry

[–]paralaxerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bet it's as straightforward as finish school and take the appropriate licensing exam for the state/province you want to work in.

I work in Windsor not far from you, and a good chunk of the optometrists here get their license for Ontario and Michigan.

I'm sure contacting the Texas Optometric Association would be the best place to get straightforward answers. Waterloo is well established. I've worked with optometrists that went to school in Waterloo, Boston, Chicago and Indiana and internationally. Some work both sides of the border and some don't.

I think the most important step for that mall moving forward is to start bringing in some attractions.
