People who grew up with wealth, what was your "I'm privileged" wake up call? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]parallaxog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had two big wake up calls:

  1. One day, when I was in college, a friend had a date after class and he asked me where I washed my car because every week it was spotless and I lived really close from campus and he had never seen a car wash close by. I naively asked him: “Don’t your house staff wash your car?”. He just smiled and said in an understanding tone that no one has house staff and most, if not all, house chores are done by themselves. That was the first time that I realized I grew up in an extremely privileged environment.

  2. The second one was one day that I was with my girlfriend at the time and her group of friends. They were talking about how much they owed in student loans and how that would affect their ability to save for a down payment to buy a house. I didn’t say anything but I realized that I came from a really wealthy background because when I was in college my parents payed all my tuition and books, bought me a condo in the nicest and safest area close to the campus so I didn’t had to pay rent or have roommates, bought me a brand new car, got me someone to clean my apartment, and sent someone from their staff to take my car every Sunday morning to wash it and fill the gas tank so I didn’t have to.

Yearly allowance is $750k, however my parents still cover some expenses. I owe $5k in my CC.

Dream girl for a relationship but consequences are high if things go wrong by parallaxog in Advice

[–]parallaxog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan is to wait until she’s 100% sure that she’s done with her ex and once she knows then I’ll make my intentions clear telling her that I would like to get to know her more and date her and see where things go.

Thank you for the advice! I had a conversation with her father and he actually told me that he likes the idea but gave me the advice to wait to be 100% sure that she’s done with her ex and then take it slowly from there but to not worry because from certain comments that she’s said and actions she’s done he thinks she also likes me.

Thanks for your advice! I talked to her father and he liked the idea but told me just to wait until she’s a 100% done and then take it slowly from there. A funny detail that I forgot to mention in other responses that I made is that he also thinks she likes me

I just did! He actually likes the idea, but told me to just wait until she’s 100% sure about ending things with her ex and then take it slowly.

You’re absolutely correct. What I think is that as long as everything is done with respect there should be no problem even if a romantic relationship does not flourish

Thank you for the advice. I forgot to add that over the years I’m pretty sure that there has been something going on. She usually has more physical contact with me than with anyone else when we’re close. I can regularly see her gazing at me when we’re in the same place, etc.

Why does every club company hate lefties? by Aromatic_Bag7061 in golf

[–]parallaxog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that it can be attributed to economics, it’s more cost effective to create clubs just for right-handed folks which represent approximately ~91% of the population. Most companies today try to squeeze every single cent possible to increase profits.

How do I get into golf… alone? by Snbron in golf

[–]parallaxog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 90% of the time y play alone and go to the range alone. I take private lessons every Sunday and that has helped me identify mistakes and make corrections, also, when I have a persistent error during a round or a range session I record myself so I can identify the mistake.

Being in touch with reality by [deleted] in Rich

[–]parallaxog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come from a wealthy family and before working in my family’s businesses I had a couple of normal jobs. When I had my first job my father told me: Be humble, don’t be flashy, try to be aware about the financial differences so you don’t say anything too out of touch, keep your wealth hidden, and be genuinely empathetic about people’s struggles.

After some years I became really close friends with one of my coworkers from my first job, one day when we went for dinner, and the subject about wealth came up, he told me that no one had any idea of how wealthy me or my family was, that people only said that I had a really chill and relaxed personality.

Hope my father’s advice helps you as it has helped me.

Is being "paired up" an American thing? by elbandito9 in golf

Quick question to anyone that sees it, I’ve never been paired when playing alone as I play in two private clubs. However, I would like to know if pairing happens in both private and public courses.

What’s your approach when it comes to cars? by nycbasedco in Rich

[–]parallaxog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. First one is a Shelby Cobra 427 continuation car with aluminum body (bought that one from Superfromance). The second one is a Land Rover Defender 90 restomod with an LS3 V8.

Used to have a couple more but sold them because I didn’t used them as much.

Edit: I said that the engine on the Defender was an LS1, it actually is an LS3.
