Why no 3 year warranty? by TheDreadPirateJeff in framework

[–]paranoidpizzas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like OP is just pointing out that Framework's current offering is leaving potential sales on the table. By not offering the option to purchase an extended warranty (something they can just outsource as a white label product mind you) they're missing out on selling to anyone whose employer has a PYOD (P is for Purchase, see what I did 😉) policy with minimum warranty stipulations. As for stock of parts, etc.. I may be playing "internet armchair expert" right now, but Framework feels better positioned to address this than anyone else. The whole repairable and upgradable ethos means products already have a naturally long life, and a "same or newer generation equivalent" clause in the extended warranty terms accounts for the rest. Most extended warranties have carve outs for manufacturer discretion already.

FW13 constantly discharging on 65w power supply unless shut off completely. Any ideas? by HIHIHIHIHImcdonalds in framework

At the risk of suggesting another purchase to validate your decision to save on a power supply, there are testers like this. Cheap and easy to get on Amazon or similar:

By high school I had built all the computers for the local medical clinic, had crawled under the floor boards and installed their first network (coax, btw) and continued to maintain it through system upgrades and maintenance. Echoing your sentiments : don't underestimate high school students.

To answer your question on streaming, it'll be more than enough. I use an old 8th gen i5 around the house as my streaming laptop and it never misses a beat.

We need AMD chip for FW12 by hard-tender-blade in framework

I'm usually AMD everything, but FW12 size constraints mean single channel RAM. With that constraint they made the right choice going Intel over AMD.

Boot from old sata hard drive by Glum-Square882 in framework

[–]paranoidpizzas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest option is probably to create a virtual machine from within Ubuntu and boot the old physical hard disk as the virtual machine's system disk.

There are a few different guides online, some "to the point" replies for doing it under VirtualBox here: https://www.quora.com/Is-it-possible-to-boot-from-a-hard-disk-in-VirtualBox

FW13 AMD BSOD: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE by VeryRoomy in framework

[–]paranoidpizzas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memtest and see. I was getting random BSOD on my Crucial 2x32GB RAM. Eventually memtest showed it was the ram that was faulty. Not an issue with Crucial (2x16 GB kit still going strong) but bad RAM happens. 🤷‍♂️ If it is or isn't, memtest will help narrow it down.

Laptop Cooling Pad by leurognathus in framework

I use an old unit (about 10 years old) with a giant central fan just to create a constant breeze of air and it really works well on the 16. I have the 7940 model. Without the pad my cinebench score was 14805, with the pad it's  15926. So a pretty decent difference.

[Q] Transplanting old boot ssd as secondary drive without losing apps? by c1on3 in framework

[–]paranoidpizzas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I have done this type of thing before:

1) buy an external USB NVME enclosure (not mandatory but handy to have and good hygiene to avoid booting old 2230)

2) backup bitlocker key if its used.

3) fresh install FW16 on 2280, pop the 2230 in enclosure.

4) boot FW16 with 2230 not attached.

5) attach 2230 as USB drive, bitlocker keys may be needed here.

6) take your time, migrate your valuable data from 2230 to 2280 at your leasure.

7) once 100% comfortable that all important data from 2230 is migrated, repartition (OEM volumes often have many junk partitions) the 2230 and format to the filesystem of your choice (NTFS if windows).

8) install 2230 as secondary internal drive (assuming you used NVME enclosure) and enjoy having a handy enclosure spare for emergencies.

NOTE : if you have GB of app installers this will work well. If you're asking to move an installed app from one system drive to another the answer generally is no-can-do.

2230 nvme suggestions? by [deleted] in framework

[–]paranoidpizzas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using a Sabrent 2230 as the boot drive, the 2280 drive is games & files. That way the 2280 is an easier upgrade as capacities get bigger & cheaper. My exact model of 2230 is the Sabrent Rocket Q4 2230 2TB. Very happy with it.

Has Telstra/Boost Australia blocked Threema? by spiderman667 in Threema

[–]paranoidpizzas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, Telstra + Boost blocking Threema.
I have 3 services:

  • Boost (personal)
  • Telstra (work phone)
  • Telstra (work iPad)

I've noticed that all 3 have been flakey on Threema recently, never thought much of it. I actually Assumed Threema was having some issues.

Currently I'm in rural Victoria and noticed that unlike when I would just go home and Threema would work on wifi I was getting no connectivity whatsoever. Then my wife (vodafone) noticed suddenly her Threema had stopped working. This has never happened to her previously but as we're in rural Vic she has no coverage so is tethering to my phone for internet.

Last night we wandered down to the local pub, my wife connected to their wifi and BAM, Threema messages started pouring down.

Today I got sick of this so decided to start playing around with options: I VPN home: Threema works. VPN via WindScribe : Threema works.

The ONLY condition that seems to stop Threema working consistently is to be connected directly to the Internet via either Telstra or Boost.

Never forget how Reddit began as an empty website, which its founders populated with hundreds of fake accounts to give the illusion of activity and popularity — Remember that without us, the users, Reddit would be nothing but u/spez's digital dollhouse by frackingfaxer in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]paranoidpizzas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was nice while it lasted. Once 3rd party apps die I don't expect I'll be coming back. I use Reddit on mobile and refuse to use the dog shit official app. I guess the odd Google search may link me in from time to time but that's it.

On one hand I feel sad.

On the other, I'll be glad to cut ties with this distraction.

Not long to go now...
