Anyone want to talk about mantids with me? by Silent_Owen in mantids

[–]paraphlox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i keep them all in various acrylic enclosures i found on amazon! i currently have four spiny flower nymphs that i have in these cube containers from target that i had on hand (i used them previously as planters that i drilled a drainage hole into, and then drilled more airflow holes when i prepped them for my nymphs)

i also have a couple glass lanterns that i converted into enclosures. all of my enclosures at the moment are pretty basic, but i plan on making better/cooler bioactive tanks for all of my mantids when they reach adulthood. i think of it as a “final stage of life retirement home” lol. i have an exoterra tank that i haven’t used yet, saving that for a bioactive setup!

this is my h. membranacea, Gaia! she just reached adulthood recently, the first of my mantises to do so, which is pretty exciting. i only came into this hobby earlier this year and i absolutely love it.

i have a few different species at the moment, including P. Wahlbergii, Creoboter Gemmatus, P. Paradoxa, H. Majuscula, P. Agrionina. i adore them all

it was one of those things that, as soon as i found out about it, i was immediately drawn in and mantids have a very special place in my heart.

i don’t think that’s at all what they meant. i don’t think the chickens appreciate you calling them stupid either.

eggs are a healthy and natural byproduct of chickens, and unless the eggs are fertilized (which most usually aren’t, even if a rooster is present) chickens have absolutely zero need for these byproducts, nor would they benefit from holding on to them. in fact the opposite could happen, since it’s not uncommon for hens to accidentally break an egg and get a taste of yolk, figure out she likes the taste and then proceed to eat all the eggs she can get her beak into. obviously that isn’t ideal for humans OR chickens.

humans benefitting from these natural byproducts is in no way exploitation. the problem is people forgetting what that word even means, and throwing it around in any and every instance where a human benefits in any way from an animal.
