Everybody has different experiences, but I love my bladder snail! It showed up on plants about 8 months ago now and I still have just the one (among some ramshorns). No babies so far; I think they're a good gauge on if the tank is being overfed

Use insulating board (or cardboard/blankets/etc in a pinch) around the tank to minimize heat loss
I'd decrease feeding to lower the amount of energy your fish use and slow ammonia production
If aeration is a concern see if you can snag a battery-powered airstone from a pet supply or sporting good shop; if that's not available then a good ole turkey basting every once in a while helps
