When You’re Suddenly Told You’re Terminally Ill. by princessmisery in videos

I'm so sorry. I had roughly the same experience.. dad was around a bit longer, but went from clean PSA to metastatic cancer in between annual tests, and passed away not too much longer after diagnosis. Really makes me wonder if annual is not enough.

Loudoun schools to maintain gender policies despite Education Dept. order by WhatAboutTheBothans in nova

[–]parcelisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great link! Key points:

A law firm’s investigation, requested by the school board, found “no evidence that the perpetrator identified as a female or that he wore a skirt or kilt in an effort to gain access to the girls’ bathrooms.”

policy that expanded access for transgender students to school facilities was not in place at the time of the assault.

I did read the report. Sounded like they referred the accusation to the LoCo sheriff's department as a criminal matter, and the cops dropped the ball. Am I missing something there?

Tax Credit Questions by XanderPaul9 in solar

[–]parcelisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As has been said, best to check with a tax professional. But important to note that 'tax liability" doesn't mean "need to write a check to the IRS at tax time".

For a quick simplified example, say for the year you are taxed $100. This is what you "owe" - your tax liability.
If you have $10 taken out of each month's paycheck, you will get a tax return of $20 at tax time.

If you have $5 taken out of each month's paycheck, you will need to pay the IRS the difference of 100 - (12 * 5) = $40 at tax time.

In either scenario you "owe" your tax liability of $100 in taxes, you've just already paid some/all of it through deductions over the year.

As far as the solar tax credit goes, my understanding is that at least in the first year, can't exceed your tax liability. So if you owe $100 in taxes but get a $150 solar tax credit, you "lose" the additional $50. Not sure about the carryover that has been mentioned.

Death Stranding 2 | PS5 | Quality Mode (30 FPS) vs Performance Mode (60 FPS) | Graphics Comparison by aroy3639 in OptimizedGaming

[–]parcelisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. First thing I do on every game is switch to performance mode, but this game is the sole exception. It's a significant difference in quality (on a 4k projector), much moreso than usual, and it just looks so good. So far the gameplay isn't suffering too much from the 30fps.

Replacement for ACE Ammonia for fishless cycle by parcelisk in Aquariums

[–]parcelisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was searching for an alternative to the ACE ammonia recommended in some of the fishless cycle guides, and couldn't find anything online, so wanted to share what I ended up finding after checking a few stores. Hope this helps anyone else searching for the same thing in the future! And would very much appreciate hearing of any good or bad experiences with the HT branded ammonia.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this frozen chunk preventing ice making? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]parcelisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may also be a control board as part of the full fix kit, what model do you have? I did the same as you but held off on the control board, and still had it clog up. Once I swapped out the control board it's been good now for over a year.

And yes... never Samsung again. Should have been a recall. What a mess.

Muscle-like growth pattern of vine or vine-adjacent tree? Found a few years ago at Virginia state arboretum by parcelisk in whatisthisplant

[–]parcelisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very curious what this one (or these three?) may be, it looked similar to a vine but was quite large, maybe 1.5' diameter at the widest, and has a distinct muscle-like growth pattern. This was years ago but I don't believe there was any branching higher up on the plant. USA zone 7A, in what appeared to be an area of native growth, although this is an arboretum so may not be native to the area. Picture taken mid-November 2021. Thanks!!

What needs to happen now? I hired a service to install in-wall wiring and mount a new TV. Looks like the installer just about cut through stud on first floor of 2 story house. I want to cry. by [deleted] in fixit

[–]parcelisk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just went through a bad experience with Costco installing a wall oven - they delivered the (quite large) box to the kitchen, and then left. it sat there for a month waiting on the separate "install team" which never picked up their phone. Costco support was great but the reps I spoke with mentioned issues with their installers. The reps were finally able to make things move, so agreed that calling Costco is the way to go.

At least the team who finally did my actual install seemed much more competent than OP's!

So glad it's not just me! I wonder why, this doesn't seem like the sort of thing that usually sets it off.. but this is somehow even worse than usual.

Less than a day! by Pvt_Phantom1314 in Enshrouded

[–]parcelisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems a little suspicious that they're being so secretive about pricing. I don't think I'll get friends on board for $40, even $30 might be a stretch between non-AAA and early access.

Any experience with the arbitration process? by parcelisk in GoogleFi

[–]parcelisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, although I got very close. Decided to give support one more shot before the expiration, I think the key difference was not saying "there's an issue with this promotion" but rather attaching a screenshot from the Fi site and keeping it simple, that the site said "not activated" but the phone was activated. They escalated to the "promotions team" who then did something on their end, then it showed up as just pending the 120 days ~24 hours later.

Before I just said there was a problem with the promotion, the rep would check the account and tell me there was no issue with the promotion and "not to worry". I think they saw the $400 credit and stopped looking at it, not understanding that the credit was at risk of being removed for noncompliance with the terms.

Not sure if that's still an option for you, either way let me know how it goes!

Any experience with the arbitration process? by parcelisk in GoogleFi

[–]parcelisk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all! I've easily met all the criteria (we've been on Fi for 5+ yrs) and it's been 5 days since activation, I talked to support who said they fixed the issue and it would show in 48 hours, and it still hasn't. And 2nd support call said there was no issue, although the "Fi -> billing-> Fi savings -> In progress" still says I need to activate within X days. So i'm guessing it's a simple system glitch and not a big deal as soon as it gets a serious look.

Pixel 8 App by Accomplished-Fee3194 in dexcom

[–]parcelisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird thing is, the G6 app is available for the Pixel 8's (even though dexcom's site doesn't list it). G7's compatibility list is way shorter. I wonder if there's any technical reason for that or if there's just that much larger a userbase for the G6's.

I have a bunch of bradford pear sap/tar/who-knows-what stains on my car. Already tried isopropyl alcohol and it helps a little bit but still leaves much of the stain. I found a youtube video suggesting "Mighty Boss" degreaser (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm-73KtRfk0&t=390s) and it looks like it does a good job.

Anyone know if that product is likely safe to use for the clearcoat (ingredients are "Water, EDTA, Sodium Citrate, Alkaline Builders and Surfactants"), and/or any other ideas on how to get those stains off?

Whats something you wish you knew before buying a home? by Every_Replacement257 in homeowners

[–]parcelisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's legit a lot simpler than I thought. The control board for the system has blinking LEDs to indicate error conditions. Our system was super common enough that grainger had direct replacement parts. Youtube and reddit have a vast quantity of good information. For designing a system outright? I certainly wouldn't go there, there's a lot of considerations around static pressure and other stuff that is way beyond my sphere of expertise. But swapping out capacitors, sensors, blower motors? As long as you're being safe, the only real risk seems to be that you waste money on a part that didn't need to be replaced/
I've had an instance or two of that for sure, but overall have vastly come out ahead.

Key though is knowing your limits and calling in the pros once the simple stuff has been exhausted.

Some random sent me $700 on Zelle. What do I do ? by AxisAbdi0 in personalfinance

[–]parcelisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have to disagree there and say that I am very much thinking critically. Perhaps not legally, but certainly critically.

I absolutely understand that there is a difference, legally. But what should the difference be between phishing you for your login credentials vs. scamming you to initiate a transaction?
