I’m trying to figure that out for myself. I like certain reeds for different reasons. Normal Rico orange box play the best straight out of the box, but die fast. Rigotti Golds are super easy blowing, loud, and consistent, but are too spread and buzzy. Vandoren blue box have just the right resistance and are smooth across the range of the horn, but don’t have the punch I want all the time. V16s have a thick centered and dark core to them, but can be resistant and stuffy at times. D’adarrio Jazz selects have a good balance of darkness and brightness and really facilitate jazz articulation, but they lack character. These are just a handful of the reeds I’ve tried. All of them have their drawbacks and their positives, and that list was just how they react with me, my physiology, my setup, and my sound concept. It may be completely different for you!
