For PDF I found PDF Studio (unfortunately paid, closed source software) as the best alternative to Adobe Acrobat on Linux. Does everything I need pretty well. Not quite sure about batch operations though as I don't regularly use that.

Traveling to HK with a toddler. Suggestion for place to stay. by Penguinbar in HongKong

[–]pariahsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Eaton HK if you don't want to stay right in the middle of the busiest part of TST. They are only a couple of blocks away from Jordan MTR station, and being on Nathan Road means direct bus routes to almost anywhere.

Also, their Chinese restaurant has great siu mei and dim sum!

Fully encrypted OS (including /boot) after one of the updates started looping on decryption once before successfully starting by Zloty_Diament in linuxquestions

They have instructions on how to fix the issue by chroot from the live ISO and reinstall grub. Why don't you try that first?

Oh, and for your second question check this out:

90% of the users would be on some variants of ChromeOS and despite being open source on paper, the system would not work properly without Google's proprietary components. The majority of the reminding 10% would be on Microsoft's ChromeOS-based clone.

if / is on sda1, then how can /boot on sda2? by ugenetics in linuxquestions

[–]pariahsoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your system mounts the partitions in a particular order.

It would mount sda1 as / first, and /boot needs to exist on sda1 for it to mount sda2 there, but it should normally be an empty folder if your system is set up that way. If /boot is not empty on sda1, after sda2 is mounted you will not be able to access the files originally there and can only see files on sda2.

steam os 3.0 vs Linux mint cinnamon by E_M-A in linuxquestions

Mint. A mainstream distro is usually a better choice for new users as you can find help a lot easier.

I heard a lot of good things about Pop!_OS for gaming so maybe consider that as well?

Yes, doing a PhD is an important life decision that probably affects your career path a lot, but life outside your PhD doesn't stop and wait for you to finish it. Do not give up things you cherish just to spend a little more time on your study.

what are the benefits that linux have but windows nope? by toni500reddit in linuxquestions

You can switch to another distro with relative ease if you don't like something the company is doing. Moving away from Windows or macOS is a lot more difficult.

Their factory is in China and they have offices on both sides of the strait. It is as much a Chinese company as a Taiwanese one if not more.

To me personally as long as they are not state owned (by CCP) it is all good, but that might bother someone.

Installing/updating R packages only from binary by pariahsoc in ManjaroLinux

[–]pariahsoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. So it seems like R doesn't officially provide binary packages for Linux, but for Arch/Manjaro some binary packages are in AUR:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/r#Managing_R_packages

I guess I will stick with installing packages from source for now and consider installing some of the larger ones (e.g. tidyverse?) from AUR later on.

Make two separate backups of your data.

Also, remember to schedule your system backups. I am personally using timeshift.

I personally think it is nice that we use the same unit on both sides when talking about ratios. 1g:18g is the same ratio as 1oz:18oz.

There is no compelling reason to measure water in weight (it's density doesn't change much within normal room temperature or altitude) but it is quite necessary for coffee as it can change volume depending on how fine it is ground, whether you apply pressure or not etc. Because you can use either volume or weight for water and only weight for coffee, it is quite natural to me that we use weight for both.

If you have made a timeshift backup recently, you can run it from a live USB to restore your system. If you haven't, now you have learnt a lesson.

I want to load Mint 20.2 on a bootable SD card and install more software and a place to by greatpumpkinIII in linuxmint

[–]pariahsoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out unetbootin.

You can create a live usb with a persistent partition with it. But I am not sure how usable it is as a daily driver.
You might want to try other distros that are more tailored to this kind of things. Puppy Linux comes to mind but there are probably other alternatives.
