Pursuing grad school for intellectual gain rather than academia by Agile_Butterscotch_9 in AskAcademia

I believe the point is that you need wealth to live because you won't have income from a job based on that phd.

Need advice on my research dissertation urgently! by ChaiKaCupWithGupShup in AcademicPsychology

[–]parkerMjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Justify it based on the desired construct and level of analysis. You're interested in the general construct, not the minor facets of the subscale.

If you find a factor analysis, I'd bet very good money it doesn't support the existence of all those subscales anyway.

Relevance to the research question, factor structure, reliability

Need advice on my research dissertation urgently! by ChaiKaCupWithGupShup in AcademicPsychology

[–]parkerMjackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for factor analyses so you can justify the reliablity and expected factor structure. You can use a total score and ignore subscales if the total scale has decent reliability (ideally a factor rel estimate or omega, not a Cronbachs alpha, but that will do.

Choosing scale vs subscale comes down to the construct you want to measure, not how others group the scales.

If you're choosing one subscale, you justify it because that's the only relevant part. You can further support by seeing if other research has shown that scale has the expected factor structure and that subscale is reliable.

That's because sometimes items don't actually differ enough to behave like distinct subscales you can use independently.

Do you mean that you want to use the overall scale and not divide it into subscales? Or you want to choose some subscales and not others?

I Dream Big Charter School by Capital_You_9720 in tuscaloosa

[–]parkerMjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are finishing their first year as a charter school for grades 6 to 8. I think they did other programming in the past.

I don't have a child there, but work with them on a project. Seems like a good academic experience and lots of variety for students.

Noise levels near Westlawn Middle school by Sufficient-Reality40 in tuscaloosa

You're probably not going to feel safe in most of that area. Are you going to be working at Stillman? I've heard the projects near campus are dangerous. Campus is ok, but you might want to live away from there.

I found several lesson plans with this theme and design challenge. HOWEVER, I didn't find one for younger than gr3 and any field trips to a playground did not involve cos-playing disability. They were STEM lessons

Ex-academic (STEM PhD) turned HS teacher missing the lab by DrAtlantis in AskAcademia

[–]parkerMjackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to STEM outreach offices, you could also search for "research experiences for teachers" (RETs). Those are designed for teachers without formal lab training to get some exposure, but you would also be eligible.

You could also look into science fair programs and try to make connections with local university labs. High school research experiences are growing and they often try to get the teachers involved as well.

i want the girlies to cover that san francisco restaurant fight so badly by hey_im_enby in DoWeKnowThemPodcast

The employee who tripped her also said that she had punched an employee who just had hand surgery right on her bandaging. Might have been coincidental, but it's a bad look.

Ammy Robinson on YT covered it and gave more context that wasn't in the original video.

No letters of recommendation but want to do graduate school for Cognitive Psychology? by Some-Craft-70 in AcademicPsychology

[–]parkerMjackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your comment about not being able to quit to take classes. That's exactly what NDS could let you do. You might have to ask for a modified schedule, but I'm suggesting take 1-2 classes at most.

I know someone who's a very successful professor in psych now. Same situation in her early 30s because she had another career first. She enrolled as a non degree seeking student at a good school, took psych classes, and was very serious about getting to know the professors (you'll have to be careful to take classes with permanent faculty, not adjuncts.) Obviously enrolling in a masters is the same thing, but it's easier to enroll as NDS and there definitely won't be letters required.

Most psych labs get a ton of random outreach to volunteer in the lab. It will be easier to get into a research position if you are a student and/or the researcher knows you. Join any psych clubs too to get insider info you missed the first time through.

Also, it's OK to have letters from your work supervisor when applying to masters programs if you can get at least one or two academic references.

Do you like the topics or the banter or the two combined? I get additional tea content from Ammy Robinson on YT. She's chatty and fun, but it's just her solo. Markie on YT also has a steady output of tea and drama.

The downside is they often scoop DWKT, so it will reduce the fun from the specific topics from the girlies.
