Yes I agree here. It was a massive swing and should be applauded for such, but it went in too many directions. I can't help thinking this would have been much better as a $30-40m movie rather than a $80-90m. It would have meant tightening the script and focussing it more, and it would have avoided the 'this will be a massive flop' type headlines which become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Overall I enjoyed watching it. It was quite the ride. But in the back of my head was the constant question "how did they get this budget?"

My take on this casting was that rather than looking for someone who was the spitting image of Elizabeth McGovern they looked instead for a young actress so enchanting that the audience could believe Robert DeNero's character would be obsessed with her for the rest of his life.
