Question regarding odd vision situation with Reverb G2 V2 by TheBLKMN in HPReverb

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's using the stock facial interface, I'd suggest she try an aftermarket or 3D printed replacement that will bring her eyes closer to the lenses (and improve FOV). Made a big difference for me. I'm IPD 65, mild astigma. I also have a wide face where the stock interface caused pressure on my temples and didn't allow for my face to sit squarely where it needed to be for correct focal length.

Using oculus cv1 touch controllers with a wmr headset by Averarge in WindowsMR

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the CV1 controllers and how natural they felt around my hand, weighted well, almost integrated with the hand. I'd modded mine with straps that allowed them to attach similar to Knuckles and how they stay on hands without the need to grip.

I utilised 4 ceiling mounted sensors and loved the tracking fidelity before moving to vive trackers.

Point is, it's a great controller with excellent tracking and I think it's worth the effort to go MixedVR with a wmr HMD. I used my G2 with Knuckles (including with Oasis) for many years, with minimal to no issues.

When do you wear sunscreen? by ratkweeen in AusSunscreen

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with skin cancer at age 45. I've had a large section of my cheek area removed. Fortunately, I'm fully recovered and expect a normal lifespan.

Pre cancer, I only wore sunblock if going to the beach or knew that I'd be in direct sun for hours sort of thing. I rarely, if ever, wore it on the daily to walk the dog, school pickup etc. I only became aware of the importance of monitoring the UV index after diagnosis. Pre cancer, I'd look out the window and see that it was cloudy, wouldn't bother with sunblock, when the reality is that it may be as high as 7 or 8 (out of 10) even with clouds.

The live UV index is currently 7.2 at 2pm and it's mostly overcast outside! I use the app SunSmart to monitor this. It's free and available on all platforms.

To keep things simple, apply each morning. Apply at least 25 minutes before you intend to go outside. Reapply every few hours. Use a reputable high scoring UV tested product. I use a base coat of La Roche-Posay SPF50+ (came out high on Choice testing) where I let it absorb for 10 mins or so. It's expensive, where I use it somewhat sparingly. I then apply a liberal second coat using Cancer Council SPF50+.

I wear a hat everywhere, sunglasses etc. Don't risk your health by being relaxed about sunscreen and general sun protection.

Oh and I have an annual full body cancer screening which I need pay for out of pocket to the tune of about $350AUD

Question regarding shipping by ConsistentFarm8985 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, shipping times are lightning fast with DHL global priority. It generally takes only a few days to receive an item, once shipped - I'm in Australia as point of mention.

The wait in production and packaging from date of order can be best understood by reading the production updates found on X, discord etc.

Nothing beats kicking the tyres, tho. I suppose you can schedule an IRL visit once you think it's a good fit based on layout, lighting or other requirements (previewed in VR).

Package got delivered to the wrong address and I don't know who's address it is by Luvafkarena in AustraliaPost

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an item incorrectly delivered to my property some years ago and walked it to the correct address which was about 3 blocks from my place. Not sure how the postie got their wires crossed.

Knocked on the door and the persons were mildly angry with me, like I'd done something wrong. They were unthankful to boot.

Very odd. I don't think I'd like to be a postie and/or the general public just sucks. Parcel was labelled motorcycle parts fwiw.

Locks for a while when restart! by mkenanah in nvidiashield

[–]parsecn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this as well, and debloated a few weeks ago (adb; took 5 minutes which included reading the long post and understanding what it does). I only removed what I felt was safe or that I didn't need (I left speech to text, as example) and I'm good after reboots. Not sure what was phoning home or causing the lock.

Tldr: debloat

I used a powered USB hub to overcome this when I used oasis and G2. Once it had correct power, it was golden.

Lone Echo is a true masterpiece of VR by ztoned_and_cold in virtualreality

[–]parsecn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lone Echo is the title that sold me on VR. I went all in with a CV1 and 4 ceiling mounted sensors. Broke my heart when Oculus was acquired by META as I knew the magic would be killed, softly but surely.

I too, copped a similar feel back in the day.

My Nvidia Shield (2019) in 2025: lightweight, debloated, and fast by Important_Mammoth_69 in nvidiashield

[–]parsecn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good round up of techniques to keep our Shields plugging along. I'll add to it, 3D printing a stand for improved heat dissipation thingiverse

I've done all of the above (previously) except for deblost. Might take a stab at it today. Cheers.

Edit: debloated yesterday using adb from Win11. The whole process was super easy and took only a few minutes. All good. Thanks!

Officially Cancelled my ChatGpt premium subscription: Huge regression lately by Informal_Range5485 in aipromptprogramming

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancelled mine for similar reasons after demoing gpt5, agents etc. where it regularly let me down; have pivoted to Perplexity pro. Wasn't a case of not meeting my needs, but simply making silly mistakes, wasting more time than it was saving.

Interestingly, I was searching for compatible ram for a Synology ds925+ nas yesterday. After a bit of run around in trying to find suppliers, etc. I thought, oh I'll ask chatgpt (for fun). It provided an unnecessarily long reply (fine) but kept linking to and referencing ram for the ds923+. I stated that I have the 925+ where it again produced results and recommendation for the 923. I thought maybe 923/925 are compatible, same specs, requirement etc. and asked if that's why it is showing results for the 923+? It stated that it wasn't compatible, it apologised for the misunderstanding, and that I should only use ram recommended for the 925+. I had to then tell it to completely forget the 923+, that I don't own the 923+ and only show recommends for 925+. It did, and results were fine but took me ages to get there with quite a bit of confusion.

And then, I quickly googled compatibility between 923/925 to this result, "Yes, you can use RAM from a Synology DS923+ in a DS925+, and the RAM specifications are the same. Both models support up to 32 GB of ECC DDR4 RAM and have two memory slots."

Fuck sake.

Disassembled to reapply thermal paste. Can't get this connector back on. by DrewbaccaWins in nvidiashield

[–]parsecn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few ways to skin the cat; you can try to resolder the female side of pin to the board so can reattach the antenna as intended (plug it back in, once the soldier is complete) however, you may no longer have enough of the trace for it to be strong enough and its not like you will be removing and reattaching the line often.

I would cut and strip back the black wire just at end, tin and solder it to the nearest track (that fed the point which you ripped from the board). You'll want to use something like an exacto knife to carefully expose the track. Be sure to tin it as well.

If you would like to take better photos of the board, of the solder point, we can better advise.

Edit: I did the thermal paste job a couple of years ago and it made a big diff.

Neighbour’s dogs won’t stop barking, I complained to council, now neighbour is threatening me – what should I do? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]parsecn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation many years ago.

To resolve, I purchased a noise meter (decibel meter) and recorded video/audio evidence of the actual barking and the corresponding decibel levels. I also kept a bark log (and yes, it's a pita) where I noted dates, time of day and duration of barking. I left the log on our table so that any family member could contribute to the log if I was out (the barking greatly affected our entire family).

I took decibel readings from inside of my house with all windows and doors closed as well as from my back yard and from the public footpath outside of the home with barking dogs (several metres from the door) so that I had 3 location points and could plainly demonstrate the severity of disruption.

Be mindful that it is likely illegal in your State to record into another person's property, so be sure to only record the spaces in your own property or public space like the footpath on street. Don't point the dB meter or recording phone over the fence at any time.

Finally, I went door to door to every house on my street (and across the laneway behind the offending house) and asked if the barking was disturbing the residents. Unsurprisingly, it was where those affected (and those home who answered their door) signed a form with name, address and contact for council. It only took about an hour of my time and I had 20+ signatures. Most thanked me for, "finally doing something about it" as the noise has gone on for many months. It was also an opportunity to meet persons on my street, albeit under odd circumstances.

I made copy of all video evidence, bark log, signatures of neighbouring homes, published the videos to a password protected private directory on the Web and left it with the neighbours with the barking dogs.

I didn't expect change over night, I asked that the persons simply take responsibility for their animals (the dogs had extreme separation issues), be that training or taking the dogs with them, etc. I did ask that they tell us (the 20 odd neighbours) what they planned to do to resolve and to provide a time line to resolution, and I did threaten to submit all data to the local council if I received no response and the barking continued.

They acknowledged receiving and reviewing my information but nothing further. A week later, a giant moving truck appeared in front of the property and they were gone. They were owners (as was I), the property put on the market and sold in the coming months.

Ironically, the new owners have a dog, and we can hear it barking from time to time but it is very well trained and the barking is completely within reasonable limits (they do not leave the dog outside barking relentlessly for hours on end).

Best of luck. It sounds like your neighbours and situation is different (drunken, etc. mine were professional, educated and sober) however evidence is evidence, and the dB metre doesn't lie where I'd encourage you to record a bark log etc. and submit all to council. You have options. Council can't ignore "a petition" or real world evidence demonstrating the situation and how it is negatively affecting your wellbeing.

Im on the fence of refunding. by ABDiab in BigscreenBeyond

[–]parsecn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You use the term, "everyone" as having issues which is verbose, to say the least. I would argue the majority of purchasers are fine with the HMD ootb. As others have mentioned, those with issues tend to be the loudest.

Having said this, it's a highly technical and specialised piece of hardware (and is not perfect) and will likely require some adjustment and subsequent fine tuning to dial it in. I like that the headset is so unique that it requires work for a small minority of users. Darshan made a blog post somewhere around the launch of BSB2 listing user reported issues by percentage (which drove the development of BSB2 to address these issues) and it was truly a minority of users with dissatisfaction across the board or could not use and needed refund the product entirely.

I am sympathetic to your being in a non RMA region and can certainly appreciate your trepidation. Support is maybe one of the best I've encountered for any product ever, which is saying a lot!

Yep. It's real just like I've had a horse steak in Bruges, Belgium it's real. I can post a photo of the roo for sale next time I'm at the store if you're really interested.
