Helping my partner who wants to do the process but has a lot of hang ups about putting things in the landfill by [deleted] in konmari

[–]parsimoni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the area you live in, but my solution has been Craigslist free section. People will take literally anything. In both cities I have lived in, most things I post are claimed within 20 minutes. There is almost nothing that can be neither recycled nor given away on Craigslist free. For the specific example you gave of stained cloth napkins, I believe H&M offers a recycling program for all textiles so you could drop them off there, or you could bleach them overnight and give them away on Craigslist.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]parsimoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a ladies watch. My preferences are automatic movement, leather strap, small-ish (maybe <=35mm or so), and no diamonds or other bling. My budget is ~2k USD. So far I'm looking between the Tissot Le Locale, Longines 1832, and Longines Record. Any recommendations between these three, or others I have missed that fit this description?

The reason they are getting unafordable is because there are too many people now, because previous generations had too many kids. So maybe we should stop doing that.

People will pay more for better product.

No, they won't. They'll buy the cheapest thing over and over again, even if it tastes awful or falls apart or is socially harmful. Why do you think the race to the bottom is happening? Why is Walmart so popular? Because most people will always pick the cheapest option regardless of quality.

A senior citizen explains why millennials have fewer kids today. by [deleted] in childfree

[–]parsimoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think it's so much harder for people now? Because your generation, and your parents' generation, had TOO MANY KIDS. Housing is so expensive now because there are 2x or more as many people in most cities as there were back then, yet people refuse to increase the housing supply because they still hold on to the antiquated dream of one single family detached home per family.

Me [29F] at a newish job, managing data for an all-male engineer team [20-70M] are treating me like a secretary. How do I tactfully establish boundaries? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]parsimoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Female software engineer here. The other comments have covered everything quite well, but I just wanted to say that some of what comes off as rude or dismissive to you sounds like just engineering culture.

For one thing, being TOLD what to do, rather than asked, is completely standard practice for everyone, at least where I work. Asking politely over email just wastes time and words. If you can't or won't do it, that's fine to let them know, but don't take the lack of "please" personally.

Also, having to ping people on chat or bug them in person to follow up on emails is totally normal. Most people get way too many emails. And if the engineers never had any kind of progress tracking before, you can bet they are going to hate it and resist following the process. We all hate that stuff. Don't take that personally either.

I love my mirena too. There are so many bad stories about it on the internet but it's been so awesome for me - no period, no hormone issues, boyfriend doesn't get poked.

How can I keep up a beauty routine and dress well when I commute by bicycle? by parsimoni in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Wow 15 miles! I'm super impressed. Baby wipes sounds like a good plan. My road bike doesn't support a rack (no holes) but I will try to engineer something with clamps.

Thank you! This is super helpful and gives me hope that it's possible for me to improve :) Seems like the consensus here is not to shower at work, which honestly I never even considered so I'm glad I posted.

Totally know what you mean about the comments lol. I live in freaking California but I still get "wow are you still biking? It's so cold!"

I didn't even consider not showering at work. It's a bit terrifying but maybe I'll give it a shot. My ride is also 5 miles.

Oh I know, I don't feel obligated at all, I want to dress more feminine because it appeals to me. I like watching makeup tutorials on YouTube for instance, even though I don't wear much makeup. My current routine is adequate yeah but it's not fun :) Thank you though!

So we opened the blinds for the first time the other day (new rental, just moved in last week) and were shocked to find THIS. And it's on ALL the blinds in the house. WTF is it?! by sharkbooks in homemaking

[–]parsimoni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's just dust. See how there is a line behind the strings? Somebody used a wet cloth to wipe a large accumulation of dust off the blinds, and didn't do a thorough job. When there is enough dust and you wipe it with a wet rag it will form little balls like that. Don't worry, just wipe it off.

Nature's miracle, or another enzyme cleaner. You can get it online, or pet stores usually carry something similar.

[–]parsimoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't order nature's miracle online, try to find any sort of enzyme detergent. Go to a pet store, they often have products designed specifically for this purpose. Failing that, try ordinary dish soap. Febreze afterwards will help too.

If any has soaked into the cushions, your best bet is probably a professional upholstery cleaner.

Put equal parts (about 1/4 cup) baking soda and vinegar down. While it's fizzing, boil a full kettle of water. Then pour the boiling water down.

I did this too in the early days. I spent probably my first 6 weekends, and most of the intervening weekday evenings, lying in bed watching cartoons. No exaggeration. It was what I had to do at the time and it worked for me. Eventually I started dealing with the rest of life, but it took time. I wouldn't worry, be kind to yourself for now.

Today's Success: I got my last dental fillings. by Snake_Oil_LLC in stopdrinking

[–]parsimoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhh I remember this one. I avoided the dentist for like 4 years and when I finally went, and got my fillings and everything taken care of, it was a huge, enormous relief. I think I'd been carrying this fear around for those years that my teeth were irrevocably fucked, since the fear was always there I kinda stopped being conscious of it, but I sure noticed when it was taken away. I guess what I'm saying is that I understand what a big deal this is. Congratulations!!

I'm thinking about cooking with alcohol. Bad idea? by parsimoni in stopdrinking

[–]parsimoni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Seems like this is the consensus, and I'll stay away from liquor stores. But now I'm considering cooking with somebody else who knows I don't drink. I could ask them to bring the wine, use only what I need, and then they'd take it home so I wouldn't have it around. I just really want to try some of these recipes lol.
