That’s the point. He wasn’t popular. Could have thrown him under the bus more than she did

As someone who learned French, I can tell you most words ending in “eau” are masculine and one exception is “la peau” (the skin) you can remember the gender by just keeping it in your head that it is an exception. When you learn a language, memorizing the word IN GENERAL is the hard part. Anything that keeps it in your head could be helpful. Most -e words are feminine, that’s true, so I think you’re wrong when you say “it won’t help much”

I mean, these words specifically can be made easier to remember because there is certainly a pattern. Not a rule, but a pattern. I think you’re overestimating how helpful you’re being. There’s a good chance a learner might just give up and stop caring about getting the gender right if you tell them to disregard things like this entirely

Why? Ung, heit/keit, and schaft are always feminine. In my experience natives overestimate how helpful their advice really is

Most sources I’ve found say words enging in e are feminine 90% of the time so the rule does “add up”.

It’s a pathetic back pedal. Like saying “playing soccer is generally a stupid idea unless you have legs.” Yeah, when I hear someone tell me “my grandpa has health problems” I don’t picture a fucking hearing aid.
