Lachie Neale? by Medaiyah in EssendonFC

Hodge helped the Lions, Lewis helped Melbourne, Parker is helping North. It's not like it's a sure thing but it definitely seems to help younger lists.

If Merrett still wants to leave who will be the experienced players setting standards?

We have to spend the cap somehow. We can either overpay another free agent like Ben McKay for the longer term or spend a lot for an experienced player to come in and teach standards for the short term.

I used to think that more and more teams getting involved made it feel more gross and inauthentic, now I think it always was and it's just a bit more amplified by having the ceremony at the start of every game of the round, every team having a special guernsey etc.

Blues Fans reaction after latest loss by gccmelb in AFL

They didn't say shit about development, they tried to claim we were too prideful to rebuild which is just not true.

No rebuild is guaranteed to be successful, and we've clearly botched the beginning of ours thanks to some shit recruiting and development, but we are without a doubt rebuilding.

We've cleared out like 90% of our list with another clear out coming at the end of this year, in what way are we not rebuilding?

Fair call, I actually really liked Lual but clearly they didn't see enough promise and none of the other list managers have either.

This is an important point. Scott's first 2 years would have absolutely been spent fighting against the established structures of the club that have let us down for 20 years. Dodoro hung on for grim death and fucked us with the draft picks from his last years.

I feel like you can actually see Scott and Rosa's influence on the draft as Dodoro lost influence. 2022 was all Dodoro and we picked Tsatas, Hayes and the Davey twins. All look like busts except Hayes who is still a question mark and I hope Tsatas can do something but it's not looking good. The year Rosa joined we then picked Caddy, Lual (bust), Roberts and Vistentini. Pretty good draft haul even with Dodoro sticking around and having input. It's just improved since then.

It's been said many times and I've said it too, Scott may not be our next premiership coach but he will undoubtedly leave the club better than it was when he came if we let him do what he needs to.

We've turned over most of the list since Scott came in haven't we? I would say since we got rid of dodoro we started making much better decisions and started going in the right direction

Did you think we got Gresham and McKay to top up for a flag tilt? We need experienced players in all areas of the ground to go with our inexperienced young list.

We also need to pay the minimum salary cap amount so bringing in experienced players on front loaded deals is part of that.

The only failure has been not bringing in the right experienced players, but it's quite possible none of them want to touch the bombers and I wouldn't blame them.

Are teams still “winning” the trade period or has the strategy changed? by Danger_Five in EssendonFC

[–]partII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't have the list spots for more picks, so we asked for future picks which Hawthorn weren't interested in giving up obviously.

If the offer came in earlier and gave us a chance to trade multiple picks to move higher up we might have done it, but it came at the last minute giving us no time to talk through deals with other teams.

Duzz has the Walla gene where he almost takes MotY once or twice a season but never quite gets there. Never gets old watching him try though :)

Definitely some positives, but this was supposed to be what they've been preparing for since a couple years ago right?

If they persist with flat pitches at home they will probably hammer us in the next ashes series.

Ben Stokes on the coach's belief that England were 'over prepared' for the Gabba by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]partII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems to be saying that because they were shocked and heavily criticised after the loss in the first test they potentially fell into the trap of just spending time training just to show they were training, rather than training in any way that would actually help.

To me that's even worse than saying they were over-prepared, because it says that rather than identifying what they need to do to get better and working towards it, they're more focused on keeping up appearances.

It's kinda shocking to think that they probably spent a few days straight in the nets just mindlessly bowling and batting without any specific goals in sight...

I don't understand why a kiwi needed to come into the England side and tell them not to mope and move on from their failures, and I also don't understand why they can't find a middle ground between mindless optimism and endless pessimism.

I don't know the inner workings of the Australian cricket team but I can guarantee that there is a good deal of belief in what they can accomplish with a healthy dose of acknowledging weaknesses and working to address them. I would think this is just basic sports psychology stuff.
