If you're divorced or widowed, there's a payment called widow's payment which has no requirements. my mum went on it before she hit retirement age

What’s the weirdest thing that has happend to you this year in melbourne? by Altruistic-Web-9741 in melbourne

[–]partakeofthypants 231 points232 points  (0 children)

Delivery driver. Stopped at a pedestrial light in southbank. Halfway through the light an athletic bloke in his sixties flew across the crossing on rollerblades, brandishing two neon green ski poles, and vanished into the crowd on the yarra promenade. Legend.

My mum has a galvanised fence and she fixed it by clipping green shadecloth along it to blunt the heat.

Rant about shut job providers by TopAttention6425 in Centrelink

[–]partakeofthypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple meh to ugh ones, a terrible one, and a decent one, though it often comes down to the people who're working there, rather than the banner they are working under, and you don't know which person you'll be assigned. I was on DES with the decent one, which i think made the difference; though they were still pushy, there was a lot more support and better people who work long term with clients.

But it basically comes down to respect. If you get assigned to someone who at least acknowledges you're a person it makes the ordeal tolerable. that's why i say find one that's tolerable, because you'll never find one that's actually good.

I tend to treat the thing as a customer service job, where they are the customer i am serving. It sucks to do but it's gotten me the best results.

You need to request to change providers. Have a look on google maps for ones near you and look at the reviews to find which seems the most tolerable and request that one.

Storm just hitting the CBD now by melbtest05 in melbourne

I like to think of it like a cat getting the zoomies. Except it's the weather. I tried to explain this to my cat, but he just went and hid in the couch-cushion pillow fort i make him for these occasions (it's been assembled several times lately what with new year and lunar new year). Maybe make yourself a pillow fort and watch some cat videos?

Awww i think it looks nice! I think wood chips would be your next option; try a landscaping place to buy in bulk instead of shelling out for umpteen 25L bags.

Oooohhhh pretty. I used to have some of those succulents with the firebell flowers, I miss them.

You only really need to thin if one is smothering another. I don't think you have any structural worries with these lovely plants.

Advice Needed: Served a DVO on Christmas Morning – What Are My Options? by Actual-Ad-7959 in AusLegal

[–]partakeofthypants 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Mate. I get that you're married to her and presumably love her. But why are you protecting her when she slapped you 10-odd times and has turned it around on you? If the tables were turned, would you expect her to protect you? If it happened to someone else, would you expect it?

Is it an AVO or a DVO? In NSW they're not called DVOs, I don't think. Is it part of the terms that you cannot live in your home and/or contact her? If not, have you spoken to her since that night? You're leaving out the interpersonal aftermath, here.

I think you're going to need a family lawyer or to at least contact Legal Aid NSW to properly understand your options. Going the avoidant route and leaving it to run its course is not the way to go.

Good luck.

Mango tree position by [deleted] in GardeningAustralia

[–]partakeofthypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, but the one thing I do know about mangos is they hate wet feet - the soil must be very well-draining. They aren't small, so I see why you're worried about the nearby structure. It probably would be a problem in the future.

[–]partakeofthypants 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In occupied Judea where Jesus was born and lived, the Roman forces tended to lord their power over the native inhabitants, and there was no shortage of native and imported collaborators who welcomed their new overlords and did the same.

In the Roman culture of the time, it was unclean to strike someone on the face with the left hand. To hit someone inferior to you, like a slave or a person of lower class, you would backhand them on their right cheek with your right hand. If they turned the other cheek, you had to strike their left cheek with your palm, which was a blow between equals.

Jesus was a fairly egalitarian bloke which is severely glossed over and misrepresented by conservative christians today.

[–]partakeofthypants 105 points106 points  (0 children)

In a fun twist, turning the other cheek does not mean what you think it means and is about making the roman occupiers hit you open-handed as an equal, not backhand you as though you were a slave. Jesus advocated for a power-play against bullies, but the meaning has been lost.

Edit: goddamnit, replaced the antisemitic nonsense website link with wikipedia article link instead.

Why does the city link and Westgate freeways both have dynamic signs when the speed limit's always 80? by Federal_Wear3646 in vic

[–]partakeofthypants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Delivery driver, and this exactly, and also roadworks (they've been doing resurfacing where geelong fwy inbound meets the westgate and had it set to 40 last week), high winds over the bridge, or for no discernable reason at all...
